Frfr. Kholby is literally Noel. Noel would NOT be the same character without him. Thank goodness for Kholby Wardell. He paved the way and gave me (queer kid in a Catholic school) a character I could relate to.
That is very true, but it was Kelly Hudson that brought the fucking house down every night before the Americans FUCKED IT UP!

He said he plays Noel to honor his dead mom in some way! He says it on his tiktok
That moment at 1:30 when they all motion off to the side... that's the sixth member of the choir
OH MY GOD THATS SO CLEVER
would that imply that jane had a solo in this productions intro song.. that would be so cool
It’s so interesting how this is a blend of Uranium Suite, Waiting for the Drop, and Fall Fair Suite. I like to see how the earliest pieces of the productions continue to influence it to this day
It's also weird how they started with the uranium suite, replaced it twice, only to come back to it.
I dont think tragic fact is the best opening song though, since it doesn't have the "round and round" or "floating through space", its not super clear that they're singing about dying - other than the narration in the middle
@@wren5685 the music of tragic fact is pretty good though. Maybe that's why it was used in all versions with different lyrics.
@@wren5685 Every version conveys a different theme, Personally Fall fair suite is the best imo because it shows all of the theme's at once, It sets the general location of death, The Death Itself, The Confusion behind them dying, & Anger as a result of their death; all at once.
@@AverageDunce yeah, i hate that they focus on the town when the show focuses on their death, not uranium, sure they lived there but they died at Wonderville’s Travelling Fun Fair
@@AverageDunce Fall Fair Suite is the best opening, most of the other opening, have more comedy to them, but i like how F.F.S. sets the tone for how dark this musical actually is,yes its a Comedy but they also all died a really dark gory death, and i feel like F.F.S really showcases the Morbidity of it it
Oh man this musical sparks ideas, I just got the mental image that the point and silence at 1:32 was for a Jane/Penny solo…but they can’t remember her, she can’t remember it to join in so they just wait in silence and Karnak joins in at that point because he realises the song isn’t going to continue so it’s a good time to interject. Total headcanon but lord if I can’t unsee it now xD
Actually thats a really cool theory about that moment
It is! In this version of the show, instead of It’s Not A Game, they would sing Uranium Suite (the choir bit) again with jane’s bit.
If you’ve looked around its the “ U R A N I U M! Where my heart goes now and then! “
OMG YES
And then later Jane herself sings in her song
"A choir never complete"
Because everyone forgoet her, her solo didn't happen, and therefore the song wasn't finished
A CHOIR NEVER COMPLETE
@@sp1n4l_sn4p Do you happen to know of any recording of this? I’ve tried looking and there’s none I can find
@@WynnK_i know there’s a recording of the very first uranium suite, that may be what they are referring to. i’m not sure though
I think it's really interesting that (at least every intro song I've heard) they include Jane's riff that none of them seem to hear (except for Ricky in some versions) I think it's a really cool thing that they keep
This probably doesn't make sense, But i imagine its because his voice wasn't heard when he was alive too, So he's the only one who stops to notice her, While everyone else are on their cues.
The only opening number that doesn't include Jane's little riff is the updated/2019 Uranium Suite.
I assume for those its cause of the order the kids are sitting in. Constance and Ocean in the front, Misha and Noel second, which leaves Ricky and Jane in the back. Given, based on Jane's harmonies, I'm pretty sure she dies last so it would sort of follow that Ricky could be second to last. Hence why he's the only one who hears her "scream".
2:42 i like how each of their actions represent them.
Ocean is making herself look perfect and profesional
Noel is just frustrated with everything
Constance seems to be insecure or simply hugging herself
Ricky has these big dreams and his bird arms show that
Mischa is just super angst so he is like showing that
And at 3:26 you have Ocean, Constance and Mischa in running positions (to leave their town), Ricky has his arm up (like a hero or space man) not sure what Noel is doing.

I LOVE how soothing Karnak's voice is in this, it's so nice and mysterious
every actors play Karnak always have a asmr vibe in their voice somehow :3
@@dangtuandung2423 yess the asmr aspect really gets me haha
I'm pretty sure that voice is Jacob Richmond, one of the writers of the musical!
Every Karnak actor has such a weirdly soothing voice. I’d let him tell me where I die
I’m actually playing that role at my theater right now!
Ricky Potts being able to speak and not having any mobility aids in this is such a whiplash
I have not seen the full version of this show, but the script has changed. Ricky is no longer disabled but mute due to his father being killed by Ricky’s pet snake. This was due for two reasons. One, the trope of disability being “cured” in the afterlife was offensive as was the stereotype and two, most actors who played Ricky were able bodied with one exception but he was dismissed in the final few shows due to coughing up Blood. Look up Yannick Robin Eire Mirko.
@@moonwalkerangel7008 I do know that and I have watched Yannick's videos! I am still mad that they decided to completely erase his disability from the show rather than make him a respectful portrayal of a disabled person.
@@candlelight7600yes! It’s so ableist that they removed Ricky all together just because they didn’t want to cast another disabled person in the role because their disability may affect whether they can go on some days-in which the easy solution is to have an understudy. But no, they just casually decided to remove Ricky’s representation for an extremely small reason. Like you said, if they were going to alter it, they could’ve made it more respectful instead
@@moonwalkerangel7008 being mute is a disability tho-?
@@moonwalkerangel7008also I don’t think his disability was completely removed, Karnak said in the afterlife they get to be what they wished they were, not what others saw them as in life. So it explains why Ricky finally talks and moves but kind off oddly as if he’s not used to it.
I adore the transition from "we will never leave this town at all" into the ride itself, chilling! especially with how they act out the ride derailing... defintely the most unsettling opening song imo

Me too! It looks so good! I'm pretty sure sugar cloud is on youtube somewhere
me too
I saw this production and it was incredible. It was 10 years ago though so I don't remember it well, sadly. If I didn't see it on the last night of its run I think I would've seen it at least a few more times and maybe remembered more lol. I'm glad that it finally got a cast recording, but there had been so many changes since this production that not much outside of this and Sugar Cloud exists and a few short clips here and there. But the main plot where one of the kids gets the chance to be brought to life was still there -- some people said that plot didn't get introduced until later, but that was definitely not the case - I think it was originally workshopped to be simply a Cabaret, but by the time it made it to the Citadel that plot was there. This Karnak was a lot more solemn than in later productions, but still had some funny lines - especially when he was messing with Ocean about the rules of the game and kept switching it up.
I think this version of Uranium Suite is my favourite because I like how (intentionally) awkward they are and I love the haunted carnival feel of Tragic Fact with the instrumental arrangement, and the brief history of the town. Plus, Jane Doe's haunting vocals. Ugh, she was such a great Jane Doe.
It's interesting though that Ricky doesn't have his mobility aids here and sings with the choir because I swear he had them in this production (for the Uranium part, that is) but I think that since this specific performance was for promotion purposes I can only guess that they didn't want to spoil it.
@@happychaosofthenorth oh wow that’s fascinating! thank you for this, it’s really cool info!!
@@happychaosofthenorth Your part about ricky is further backed by the fact that Elliott Loran seems to not know that choreography and lyrics as well, he just kinda looks awkward
If you look closely at 1:13 when Mischa says his part, you can see Ocean kinda looking back at him, glaring or annoyed and then looks back at the front.
Noel also looks over 😂
I wish they kept Karnak as a puppet. God it was such a good puppet
but isn't karnak a puppet in the proshot?
@@ggiantsintheskyy5670 I believe there is going to be another production soon where Karnak isn't a puppet so that might be what they're referring to.
@@ggiantsintheskyy5670 I haven’t seen the proshot, only the boot on RUclips, where it’s a guy in a suit. Still has puppet aspects to it; sorta like how muppets like big bird work but to a lesser extent, that’s what I meant
They speak very briefly about the change from puppet to costume during the interview the co-creators and the former producer took part in
I love how at the mall part they all depict different jobs
Noel is a taco maker (Noel Gruber hungry hombre meal maybe?)
Ricky is a cashier
Constance is a janitor
Mischa helps customers get things off high shelves.

Hoping bust might turn right back to boom

Bowed down to the mighty buck
Waiting in this godforsaken tomb
Empty people, empty mind
Living life or killing time
A dead-end town against dead-end wall
There's nothing cute and nothing sweet

really love this version!! it gives a really great picture of the town yet still keeps all the spooky elements of them meeting their death! i think this version helps give constance's song more meaning as well- they paint the town as this bleak, horrible life, so her still loving her town and being kind despite it all makes her so much more interesting
I love how most songs sound like carnival songs, which adds to the eerie vibe because thats where they died

NAH MATE THAT KARNAK SCARES THE LIVING SOUL OUT OF ME
i love this oceans voice so much!! its so unique
In this version of Ride the Cyclone, Ocean's song was a gospel tune called Play To Win, a huge style departure from What The World Needs, a Brittney Spears/Taylor Swift inspired number. This likely accounts for the different voice style. I love it as well!
I find it interesting that Ricky doesn’t have his arm crutches/can talk in this run of rtc
He didn't either in the current Blue Bridge production here in Toronto--the final version according to Richmond. He is able bodied (in fact, played by the best dancer in the group even before his song) and while it's mentioned that he never spoke, it's never shown (he plays the tambourine instead... which I didn't remember from earlier versions...) That said, it was brilliantly cast and mounted.
@@EricMontreal22 do you know why they changed him from being disabled?
@@amelooloo I could ask Richmond. I really don't know--he has a different backstory too. I'm not sure if that's the final version or not (I hate to think that it might be because it's pretty hard to get away now with having a disabled role played by an able bodied person...)
@@EricMontreal22 im curious what the new backstory is, did he still have 14 cats? that was my favorite detail of his backstory
it makes sense they would alter it since yeah, the optics i suppose aren't great and "magically healed disabled character" is NOT a well-loved trope. that said it would be nice if they retained him being disabled somehow... even if it was having a degenerative illness that hadnt yet progressed the way it had in earlier runs. i didnt love how they did it but since im disabled myself it was really exciting to see a musical with a disabled character
In some scenes of a trailer he's shown in a wheelchair at a part of where they (Choir) are wearing white robes, except Ocean, I think you can see him.
Just recently got interested in this musical, and I’m glad I did. I find it interesting how it’s a bit of a blend between the others , yet rick is able bodied! Also, this version is definitely more mechanic & chilling than the rest! Love it!

interesting that ricky can speak/is able-bodied in this version. does anyone know why this switch was made?
I know there was some backlash with ableism in the original run cause Ricky is the only one to concede which some people felt perpetuated the whole “living life as a disabled person isn’t worth living” idea. To be fair, it's like the only thing to do at their town, they'd get sick of it eventually.
It's so funny because of how real it is to the small-town experience. Either you love the only entertaining place in town with your whole heart in soul, or you can't STAND it.
I think this is probably my least favorite opening song from RTC. All the others focused on the kids like the rest of the musical, but this one feels disconnected from the rest of the show by focusing on Uranium for some reason.
I can't say just how much I agree with you. I mean I like this song separate from the musical but it doesn't make sense in context. The entire point of the musical is about the children and how they were more then their deaths. My favorite opening song has to be fall fair suite as it does show the children dying it focuses more on the kids REACTION to their death and it does a great job of showing their personalities

I know I already commented on this video, but I was wondering if I could use the audio (from around 1:36 onward) for an animatic?
Sure thing! Just be sure to credit the cast and creative from the Citadel Theatre production of Ride the Cyclone!
@@croutonwu Of course! I always link the video I got the audio from (if it’s available), would be enough, or should I write it in the description?
@@HuntressLilly Just to be safe, I would write it in the description, but a just a link should be fine!
Happy September 14 everyone! 6:17 pm :)
ricky looks way to happy lmao keep going babe!
I feel like rtc wouldn’t be rtc with kholby
I love this intro and all but they mention the mall so much you’d think that killed them not the roller coaster
Tbh, they seem to talk about it because they see it's the only real somewhat "cool" thing Uranium had
Im wondering, does anyone have a recording of the ORIGINAL ride the cyclone?? The one featured in this video! P l e a s e do not reply with a link to the 2016 performance.
yes we do
@atomicvaudevilleBC Would you be willing to release it maybe? There's absolutely no obligation, but i would love being able to see it!
@@Milkshake-Bakes It's currently in a password protected VIMEO, the 2011 version at Summerworks in Toronto. Let me figure out how we're going to go about releasing it. We'll have to get author's permission.
@atomicvaudevilleBC Okay. Please let me know what's going on when you figure things out!
@@atomicvaudevilleBC OMG I had to reply so I can get notifications 😅
(My kid introduced me to this show and it was maybe my proudest ever parenting moment. Like “my kid has excellent taste in musicals!”)
I accidentally learned all the choreography
man that Karnak figure got looks 😍💄🫦
I love this!
does anyone have a slime tutorial of this version?
This sadly is the only version ruclips.net/video/vnyJITUWVeg/видео.html
i agree, anyone?
i dont think there is currently a slime for this one because of how old it is, you can find clips of some songs on youtube but if there is one its probably in the hands of the theatre
KHOLNY CARRIED I LOBE YOU
I mean at least they’re onto that suspicious looking Mall
i need to watch this..
3:34 khobly's voice is so cool i never get tired of hearing it
this version of the intro just is not hitting at all for me i feel like all the other ones have more of an urgency but i feel like this one is just kinda dead 😭
thats the point though!!! its about the town and their lives instead of their deaths like the other songs!!! /gen
@@BM-up3or oh i did not gather that at all LOL idk i just don’t like it that much tbh
Funny how I like this one more than the Uranium Suite we got on the album haha, but yeah the dead thing is on purpose
@@diliwis5305 yeahh i get that now i guess after being so used to the other ones i just can’t bring myself to like this lol
So in the timeline of all the productions, where does this one fall?
as far as i can find this is from the 2013 canadian tour, so fairly early on
It started in Victoria largely with this cast, in around 2008, and progressed to Vancouver and then across Canada. After it became a hit in Toronto, it moved down to the US where the entire caste was pretty much replaced except Kholby Wardell. There have been a number of productions in the US, and the play has been evolved over time. It is fantastic in every iteration, but I prefer the original cast, having seen them four times live and only seen the later productions on video. Live is so much better and while the music is now available, I would be happy if we could hear all of the Canadian group singing.
I like this better than uranium suit but a little less than fall fair suite, they’re all so good tho
kholby is fucking everywhere and i love this (i just love him thats a kue)
Can someone explain to me why Ricky is singing in this intro 😭
I get that since this is a more recent show they’re using the new script that erased his disease but I thought he was still mute??
This is actually the first Canadian tour of RtC before it came to the US. There was no real plot, it was a cabaret style show and Ricky's character was a bit different, one such difference being his ability to speak pre-accident.
@@croutonwu Ohh that makes a lot more sense now thanks!
