The Largest Cat Tracked Loader ever Produced (983B)

  • Caterpillar's 983 tracked loader was first launched in 1969. The standard bucket capacity was 4.5 yards but was increased to 5 cubic yards by 1972. Power came from a D343 six cylinder turbocharged diesel engine developing 275 flywheel-horsepower. By 1978 the 983B was available. No change was made to bucket capacity or power but the weight was increased by 1 ton to 39.3 US tons. The 983B featured pedal steering, freeing the operator’s hands for the transmission and loader controls. An automatic bucket control system allowed the bucket to rise to a pre-set dumping height and return to a pre-set digging angle for fast cycle times. In 1983 Caterpillar discontinued the 983B and has not produced a tracked loader as large since. Awesome Earthmovers filmed this 983B at the 2018 Welland steam fair in Gloucestershire, U.K. #bulldozer #excavator #digger

I was an operator for a demolition company in Ohio and got the pleasure of operating the 983. It had a rebuilt engine and gobs of power. You could feel the ground shake when it goes past you. It wasn't fast, but then it's not built for speed. And built like an Abrams tank. I think the only plastic or rubber was the fan belt and the guage covers. They don't build like that anymore.

I like these Tier 0 diesel machines, no DPF or tricky sensors / software updates down times

Ran a new B yes ago on large sewer projects backfilling and grading. We had this and a couple 977’L’s 983 was a total monster

I had a 977, the next size down, the word "beast" does not begin to describe it. If you somehow fell off the machine while it was moving there would be nothing to put in front of it to stop it. Everyone at Cat had to be smiling watching this thing get tested for the first time.

Travis B I had a 977… it was no match to the Allis Chalmers 12G or the monster 21G

Never seen one. If it was better than a 977, it must have been a tank with a bucket.

    impressive. ..
as a kid i used to watch (hole in the fence ) operation of the 977../955 on residential demolition and excavation sites....before modern excavators.. skilled operators...awsome. .!!

Same here. Colonial pipeline came through when I was 5 or 6 and all those steel monsters rumbling and cutting and digging began a lifelong admiration for both operators and machines.

Yes they built about 700 homes behind where we lived. My Dad and Grandfather did all the brickwork, fireplaces and chimneys. There was a fella Marty who had a 955 track loader and he dug every foundation and every house had a basement. Made it look effortless even digging shale. Great machine run by an awesome guy that made life easier for everyone on the jobsite for years.

The main reason this tractor was descontinued was the fuel consumption and undercarriage failures and expensive service. And today's differential locked wheel loaders are more capable to handle such a load like that, faster and less expensive!
