Lecture Series on Soil Mechanics by Prof.B.V.S. Viswanadham and Prof. G. Venkatachalam, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay. For more details on NPTEL visit nptel.iitm.ac.in.
Did my undergraduate study from 1990 to 1993. Been a long while. Was going to do MSc right after but scholarship fell through and headed home instead. But did get another chance to meet Prof Burland again in 1997 I believe when he was the keynote speaker for one of the geotechnical conference in Malaysia.
love to learn refrence figure 28:52 step 1 draw x and y axis(as shown in figure) step 2. draw outward normals to the planes x and y ( outward means away from the triangular wedge it will be upwards for x plane & and leftwards for y plane ) step 3. check if the normal is in direction of negative axis or +ve axis e.g on x plane it is upwards while we have chosen downward y as +ve , similarly normal on y plane is _ve step 4 . see direction of shear if it is along +ve axis on a plane where normal is +ve then it is considered _ve, to be +ve it has to be in opposite sense as normal normal +ve, shear along nagative axis shear considered negative.... step 3.

Ah... Professor Burland. My uni soil mechanic lecturer. He was the reason I went into soil mechanic and geotechnical engineering.
thanks alot, this was good prep for prof john burlands lecture
best way proceeding lecture......
can u expalin the sign convention of shear stress please
love to learn
refrence figure 28:52
step 1 draw x and y axis(as shown in figure)
step 2. draw outward normals to the planes x and y ( outward means away from the triangular wedge it will be upwards for x plane & and leftwards for y plane )
step 3. check if the normal is in direction of negative axis or +ve axis e.g on x plane it is upwards while we have chosen downward y as +ve , similarly normal on y plane is _ve
step 4 . see direction of shear if it is along +ve axis on a plane where normal is +ve then it is considered _ve, to be +ve it has to be in opposite sense as normal
normal +ve, shear along nagative axis
shear considered negative....
step 3.
*shear postive last line
@@hydermaqbool7954 thankyou verymuch
Thanks a lot for this helpful lecture
Thanks a lot Sir
Sir quit confusing to solve equatiins of shear and normal stress at equillibrium of soil sample .plz help in resolving and solving...
quit confused with sign convention of shear stress .....plz help
Me 2 dear
Me too
ITS GOOD..
thanks sir
when did u do the msc at ic?
Marker naal khed rea bai 😂
