    The fact that you guys took the time to talk about this shows how much you care. I had this conversation with Jordan a few months ago. We had never spoken prior, but he was so helpful. You guys are the classiest act on here. Love it. Keep up the great work and thanks always Chris and Jordan.

    Praise the Lord for a simplified, layman's explanation of LOG along with its benefits, advantages, and application. The clips of the actual super basic grading/prep were SO helpful. I've been studying this "LOG" business for weeks now watching a multitude of tutorials but this one truly stands out for us beginners. Thank you gentlemen!! :D

    I have been in the video production business since 1985 and also shoot on the GH4 amongst various Sony cameras. This is the first video I have seen that explains 'jargon free' log files. Well done, very good indeed, we want more. I must also say your gear reviews are the best on the web and I buy kit regularly on the strength of your reviews. Keep up the fantastic work!!

    Excellent presentation. In under 10 minutes you explained and demonstrated something that usually seems so esoteric. As always, thanks to Jordan and Chris. This is my go to channel for reviews and photo information.

    Yes, bring more of this. And not only on video, on stills as well. Really helps beginners or amateurs to understand the power of post.

    I'm new to filming, after 20+ years of photography, so for me, a video like this is fantastic. I get the general direction in which I have to start off. Great time saver! Many thanks :-)

    This technique was one of most impressive things about the first video I watched on your channel. It was a super high-contrast scene (perhaps even your demo scene), and yet your presenter had perfect midtones and wasn't blown out. I've rarely seen such impressive grading of difficult lighting.

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    Great video! Random thought: Why don't camera manufacturers change the autoexposure mechanics when you enable log video? Instead of exposing for middle grey, expose so that the highlights are at some configurable level, say, 90%.
    We used to shoot everything in log, and then decided that even with proper exposure we didn't like the final result as much as with non-log video. So, now, we only use log when the dynamic range of the scene requires it. Is this dumb? Is log giving me something I'm overlooking?

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  9 лет назад +6

      +Tony Northrup I would love to see autoexposure and metering take Log overexposure into account. I've mentioned this to a few camera manufacturers, let's see if it happens! I often just use a light meter and rate the ISO lower than native (i.e. 800 ISO for the A7S).
      I try to shoot everything log since I've been trying to improve my color grading skills. You can certainly see some pretty poor grades on our channel, but it's been worth it for me to figure out each camera's color character and sensitivity. The Denver Riddle channel has helped me enormously in the past couple months.
      I still shoot non-log occasionally if I need very quick turnaround, but generally I always want access to that extra information.

      +Tony Northrup Why don't camera manufacturers offer ETTR for still image capture? It's broken the same way

    • @YourTrulyFriend

      +TheCameraStoreTV Awesome video guys! But I have a problem, maybe you can help me. I'm using Adobe Premiere, and when I want to color grade, control those shadows or highlights, the image start flickering - the exposure changes every second. And that's not on "auto amount". Any idea why? Thanks!

    • @SullyCortez
      @SullyCortez 8 лет назад +2

      +YourTrulyFriend you CANNOT just use the Lumetri panel when grading VLog L...it's based off the Varicam LOG and you need proper cinema controls to manipulate it professionally at 8 bit without macro blocking and artifacts. Use Color Finesse in Adobe After Effects it's free and adjust the MASTER on an adjustment layer so you're not messing with the actual image file... to look more at this and how to correctly grade VLog L for professional use, look up Alex Centeno MBA and watch his GH4 VLog color grading techniques... especially his 4:4:4 chroma multisampling technique which is amazing. I only grade this way now thanks to Alex's beautiful results

    This was an OUTSTANDING video. You guys do a good job with being funny without fluff; that is, you guys do a really good job getting to the point. And your pacing is amazing when it comes to complicated topics. I've seen A LOT of videos on grading, and this is by far the one that was the easiest to digest (lots of graders on RUclips assume the viewer knows what they're saying so they just throw complicated terms and move quickly). So Keep it up!

      Try NEAT video, I shot a video at 12800 and I was able to make it look as clean as ISO 100 and it didn't look soft and retained all the sharpness and details. Resolve studio for 300 bucks also has a good denoiser in it. Neat video is around 70 dollars. Works in any program.

    I use the Samsung NX1, it doesn't have log, but has some profiles, but you still have to change them to lower the saturation, contrast and sharpness, but the files become really workable for color grading later. The NX1 is the first camera I've had that lets me get really high quality video footage, and it's so freeing getting this quality and being able to grade it more in line with what I've been doing for so long with raw files for still photography. It's like it's finally worth doing video work.
