    Great episode! Well done!
Icelandic Horses are raised in herds, so they are well socialized. They seem to rarely have any vices - they don't bite or kick. They can easily carry large humans - George Foreman has a stable full of Icelandics!
Anything one plans to pack for riding in Iceland, including all tack, clothing and footwear, must be brand new, never used or worn by or around horses in one's home country. This prevents importing equine diseases into Iceland.
Back in the 90s, mom and I got to ride an Icelandic Horse during a horsey expo called Equitana, in Louisville, Kentucky. What a wonderful, adorable, sweet and smooth-gaited darling he was, too. We spent a lot of time hanging around with them and their lovely humans. Just as my turn to tølt was about to begin, I looked around. There were Arabians coming out of stables on the right hand side, Missouri Fox Trotters over to the left, and right in the middle there were a bunch of Friesians coming out of an arena. I couldn't help singing, "Heaven! I'm in heaven!" 😆 And I happily patted my cute little gray and white steed.
I bought a pair of Icelandic stirrup irons from an Icelandic breeder while we were there. He was a riot; reminded me a lot of Willem Dafoe. Those irons are The Best. S-curves for each bow, so it's easy to pick up a lost stirrup, and hard to get a foot caught during a fall. The eye is at an angle, so they always hang the right way, which also makes it easier to pick them up. The wide tread is great for stability, security, and they prevent foot fatigue. My feet never fell asleep, not even on day-long trail rides up and down mountains and hills. The Best.
Icelandic saddles are usually padded and V comfy, too. Perfect for long treks.

Ah that was lovely - thanks Josie-Ann and Asha for the welcome break from the ongoing horror show*. Icelandic horses are fantastic animals - if you get a chance to go riding, do so - they are very friendly, gentle and safe. Lots of companies offer riding for all levels of experience.
If you don't like riding, don't worry, they are very approachable and you won't go far in Iceland outside the cities without seeing some by the side of the road.
    * in the UK - so you can guess what I mean by that.

Thinking of you back in the motherland, Mike! And yes, Asha has already been horse riding during her stay here. Myself, I'm more of the rolling-down-the-hill type.

We ate at Kopar in Reykjavik last year and it was epic! It deserves a Michelin star as well. I love Iceland and would live there in a heartbeat. And yes the pools are epic also.
Thank you for a great broadcast!

I’ve seen these horses up close. Absolutely beautiful animals. And yes, it can be cool in July. Iceland is considered an Arctic country.

We were lucky enough to see a similar competition in April 2019 in Sauðárkróku up north, as suggested by our guesthouse hosts. It was held in the evening, in an indoor venue and there was snow on the ground outside. We sat on wooden benches and I think the 2 of us would have been the only visitors amongst the excited local crowd. A great experience and it was a real highlight. Love these horses!

FYI, We DO have public pools in the USA! not in every town, but in many.

    • @1ACL
      @1ACL 2 года назад +1

@@schoolingdiana9086 US cities have indoor public pools. The largest (small) town near me here in CO has an indoor pool. And there is also an outdoor hot spring fed pool. Its not "public"/ govt run, you have to pay to get in..
I think Iceland has alot more indoor pools, but many outdoor hot
spring pools, too. Summers in Icleand are not really very warm, so doubt many people swim outdoors in unheated water. But I am not sure.

There are public pools in and around Detroit, Michigan. Some suburban ones are in parks for locals only - a park pass issued by the city is required. There are also swimming pools and beachy lakes in the state-run ones and the Metroparks. We pay to get in, but passes that are good for a year or longer can be purchased. Car stickers are provided with them. The money raised goes to the state Dept of Natural Resources, which runs and maintains the parks, and keeps an eye on our wilderness and animals.
A friend in Lou-a-vulle, Kentucky kept driving us past a big public pool, seemingly every time we went out, when I was visiting him one very hot summert. I finally couldn't stand it anymore, and asked whether we could go get into our bathing suits and come back to the pool. He looked horrified, and said there were far too many children in that pool all day, every day, so he did not consider it very, um, safe. Meaning it was hardly hygienic. 😆 He took me to a friend's place to swim in their great big pool instead, where no wee ones were weeing 😆

Truly these are fantastic horses. I’m sure I once read that owners prefer that visitors don’t stroke or touch horses (for example, off the side of the road), but during my last visit, and not knowing this, I spent a good 20 mins stroking a few very friendly horses. This event looks great. The horses movement is amazing. Thanks guys for a great video 👍🏼

So glad for this report! was in Iceland in March and was able to see these beautiful animals. Didn’t have time to try the pools - next time! Also, I live near a city of 800,000 in the US which did not open their outdoor pools this year because of lack of lifeguards. They have 2 indoor pools and splash pads available. Sad.

I first saw an Icelandic horse on a vlog from a stable here in the states. They added the Iceland to their stable of assorted other breeds. Yoka fit right in from the start...so sweet and calm. I didn't know this but it's considered bad luck, Karma or whatever to change the given name of the Icelandic horse when you get it as it's name is considered a part of the horse's psyche. Thanks for an informative video.

Why do icelandics get special treatment just because they are a certain breed? But other horses dont.

@@ifjchsiwocjcjs4378 There are lots of YT channels for other breeds. I follow 2 for Freisians...one is a farm that raises Friesians for sale, the other is a horse rescue. If there's a horse breed you're interested in...put it in the "search" box and see what pops up.🤗

Loved this episode, we love the Icelandic horses - were astonished to hear how many more of them there are outside Iceland than at home there! Also interested to hear Laugardalslaug's late opening, I'm going to try and get there after the Iceland Noir Thurs session in Nov! Loved the mic on your pigtail too Josie! How about a report from the Hella motorsport dirt track event as well, whenever that is?!

When I was at the Blue Lagoon some of the showers had doors so there was no need to shower infront of others - the reason for showering before entering public pools is very important, it is a legal requirement and there are instructions on the walls with diagrams to remind!
