If you always use sand, surely its always going to end the same way... any kid whos tried to block a stream at the beach with a sand dam will tell you it will inevitably fail.

That shift that caused the bunker structure to move would have probably damaged any ladders for upward exit. That would suck in a real life scenario, to say the least.
