    "I don't mind stealin bread
    From the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless
    When my cup's already overfilled"

    • @TheInsaneShecklador
      @TheInsaneShecklador 3 года назад +27

My take was always that the song was about the wealth/power divide in society and Chris' struggle with switching roles and now becoming part of the rich/powerful class. He has been blessed and his cup is now overfilled. I feel like he is promising himself not to become part of the problem or ever forget where he came from.

The song is about Ticketmaster, how they gouge the customers. Basically they didn't want to charge outrageous prices for concert goers, but Ticketmaster was charging too much... how can they feed on the powerless (the fans) when their cup is already overfilled. (Them already rich they don't need more).

FINALLY!!!! THANK YOU!!! These boys were made to sing together!!! P.S..... this collab is when Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) met everyone.... he was in the studio to audition for the lead singer position (due to the tragic death of Andrew Wood lead singer of Mother Love Bone).....
To quote Chris Cornell.... "I was struggling to get my vocals to sound the way I was hearing it in my head. Then this guy Eddie quietly, but with some balls, walked up to the mic and started singing. I liked it, we did a few run throughs and the rest is history"....
FUN FACT: This is when the band Pearl Jam was born.....
TEMPLE OF THE DOG album was released April '91 and Pearl Jam's 1st album "TEN" was released just 4 months later, August '91....
    I'd say that was fate....
SIDE NOTE: Out of Andrew Woods tragic passing, the band Pearl Jam was "born"..... they're celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their 1st album in August....

@@ericanthony Thank you Eric! The history of these grunge bands/the meteoric rise is as fascinating as it is tragic.... and, I LOVE "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" and Andrew's voice!!
So sad he didn't live long enough to see what his influence spawned.... he inspired the hell out of Chris (and many of the others).... I know he's happy up there knowing that what he started turned into one of the 4 greats of the Grunge bands and ultimately ended up being the ONLY band left out of them (due to the deaths of the other 3 singers)....
I wonder sometimes if Andy's death was part of a grand plan.... and maybe he had a small part in "hand-picking" Eddie to succeed him?? Either way, their music and stories are incredible!!
I hope one day we can get Leo to do "Say Hello To Heaven".... I saw an interview with Chris (from the early '00's) where Chris said he was pissed at Andy for dying and he wrote down all his feelings and all the things he wanted to say to him and it became that song. He went onto say that it's basically a letter to Andy.... K, I'll shush now! lol!! See you around.... :)

The story behind this is the singer with the high voice, Chris Cornell, was roommates and close friends with Andy Woods, who was the singer of a band called Mother Love Bone. Andy died of a drug overdose. Chris Cornell joined forces with some the remaining guys of Mother Love Bone to form Temple of the Dog for one album in tribute to Andy. The guys of Mother Love Bone, replaced Andy on vocals with Eddie Vedder (the guy with the lower voice and growl here) and they became Pearl Jam. The Temple of the Dog album came out before Pearl Jam released it's first album, so they weren't really famous yet, but Temple of the Dog includes guys that would all go on to be absolutely HUGE: Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Audio Slave, etc.. Unsurprisingly, the Temple of the Dog album is a true masterpiece.

    • @tinagilbert8902
      @tinagilbert8902 3 года назад +2

True Chris and Andy were roommates at one point but more importantly they were best friends. Secondly, Soundgarden/Chris Cornell already had their record deal, had released their 1st album AND had a hit on the radio when Andy tragically OD'd and died. (Andy and Mother Love Bone also had their record deal in place and were up-and-coming)..... Thirdly, the T.O.T.D. album consists of.....
1)Chris Cornell: lead singer of SOUNDGARDEN- and close friend of Andrew Wood
      2) Matt Cameron: drummer of SOUNDGARDEN- and friend of Andrew Wood
      3) Stone Gossard: lead guitar of MOTHER LOVE BONE and close friend of Andrew Wood
      4) Jeff Ament: Bass guitar of MOTHER LOVE BONE and close friend of Andrew Wood
      5) Mike KcCready: rythm guitar of THE SCREAMING TREES and friend of Andrew Wood
***** MEMBERS OF PEARL JAM.... (compare with the T.O.T.D. members above) are....
      1)Matt Cameron: drummer
      2) Stone Gossard: lead guitar
      3) Jeff Ament: Bass guitar
      4) Mike Mcready: Rythm guitar
      5) Eddie Vedder: Lead singer
**So this one-time tribute album (to Andrew Wood) was inspired and written by Chris Cornell for Andy and he gathered some of their close friends (only 2 of whom were Andy's former band mates in Mother Love Bone) to record it. All members (with the exception of Chris) did go on to become Pearl Jam.... this album was released in April '91 and Pearl Jam's 1st album "TEN" was released just 4 months later in August '91.....
SIDE NOTE: Eddie Vedder is only on this one song and it is ONLY because he was in the studio waiting for his audition with Stone and Jeff for their new lead singer position (due to Andrew's death).....
To quote the Chris Cornell: "I was struggling to get my vocals to sound the way I was hearing them in my head. Then this guy Eddie, quietly but with some balls, walked up to the mic and started singing. I liked it. We did a few run throughs and the rest is history".....
Just wanted to share... Peace.... :)

The drummer and singer are from Soundgarden (the singer later was in Audioslave) and the rest of the band including the other singer were at that time forming Pearl Jam. This band was a side project they did in honor of Andrew Wood, the singer for MotherLoveBone, who was friends with all of them and was in that band with two of the guys that play here and formed Pearl Jam because he sadly died of a drug overdose and the band had to break up. The singer for Pearl Jam was just joining the band and getting to know these guys and he was invited to duet on this song, which was his first major recording because it came out before Pearl Jam's first record. These days the same drummer actually plays in Pearl Jam, so Temple of the Dog is basically current Pearl Jam plus Chris Cornell, Soundgarden's singer doing lead vocals, with Ed Vedder doing backup vocals in some songs.

This was the single album supergroup for Grunge. Before it broke out, the lead singer of a band called Mother Love Bone had died. The members of Soundgarden would hang out with some of the remaining members of Mother Love Bone and their new singer (to become Pearl Jam). So they decided to do a tribute album together. The whole thing is fire.

Temple of the Dog was a 1-off project written by Chris Cornell in 1991 as a mourning tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone who died of an OD in 1990... Wood's former bandmates helped record it... and subsequently formed Pearl Jam that year...

The labels are cutting off their own nose to spite their faces. You remind people of good music again!! They should be happy, so many awesome songs from my time was lost and now they are re-revealed to be enjoyed by a new generation. You're also crossing genres and exposing those to good stuff who wouldn't normally listen. Please don't let them stop you, people like me need this! You're making my heart smile 😀

Temple of the Dog is Chris Cornell (vocals) and Matt Cameron (drums) from Soundgarden with Eddie Vedder (other vocals), Mike McCready (guitar), Stone Gossard (also guitar), and Jeff Ament (bass) from Pearl Jam, but before Pearl Jam had released any albums. It was a magical moment in music history.
Temple of the Dog was only a thing for one album, but the other must-hear song is Say Hello 2 Heaven, which is arguably the reason the album exists in the first place.

"Where the hell did they get these voices from?"
    Seattle 💚
And yeah they were definitely brothers, not from the same parents, but bonded together by music. Eddie (the shorter one with the low voice and "the look" you were talking about) was actually very shy about singing in front of others at first. Chris (the taller one with the high voice) was a real leader in the Seattle music scene and really helped connect a lot of the musicians here. He took Eddie under his wing and helped him get over his shyness. Who knows if he would've been able to be the lead singer of Pearl Jam all these years without that. Here's a pretty great little clip I found about it the other day (for some reason there's no sound in the first 20 seconds, FYI). Be sure to watch thru to the end when they're on stage together - you'll definitely see how much they were brothers :) ruclips.net/video/X14DPrKqBWo/видео.html
