Peanut butter is rather expensive in France. And there are some unnecessary ingredients. So a few years ago, I thought I'd check the ingredients in the packets of roasted peanuts sold as an aperitif. The cheapest ones. Just roasted peanuts, salt and a little peanut oil. So I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. I toasted my peanuts a little more in a frying pan. I let them cool, then headed for the blender. No need to wash or peel them. And the result is impeccable. 👌
Since then, I haven't bought another jar of peanut butter. Nor tahini, I make the same thing with toasted sesame seeds, and a drop of toasted sesame oil. Or with toasted, peeled walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts and a little oil. All in all, a great way to save money and make beautiful gifts. Cute little jars, varied, with pretty labels.
Greetings from France 🇫🇷 and happy holidays to you all.🎄🎁🌟🥰👋

I buy roasted peanuts, so all I have to do is put them in the food processor. It comes out much thicker than this, which is more similar to store bought peanut butter. It almost tastes like candy, especially if you add honey. It can be rolled into balls and coated with melted chocolate for a good treat.

I have been making my own PB in the UK for a few years. I used to add peanut oil, but was told I didn’t need it.
I do cheat a bit, as I am old and struggle to spend time removing the shells. So I get plain pre-peeled shelled nuts from the supermarket (400gm) .
Then roast them for about 15 minutes, watching to make sure they don’t burn!
I let them cool a bit, then add them to the only blender I own, a Nutribullet. With only one power setting it takes time, and I stop if the machine gets too hot. I add sea salt: experience tells me how much. When it is done I pour/scrape it out into a clean class jar with a screwed metal lid.
It lasts for months in a cupboard, but in a hot months it can get TOO runny, so I put it the fridge for a while.
When I get to the bottom of the jar, I make more and add it. Occasionally, I add a bit of peanut oil to loosen up the thickening old PB first.
My daughter won’t eat commercial PB, and I have to make her a jar every month, which she collects.
It IS a learning process, and until you het into a routine, your early efforts might not all be perfect.
    But keep at it.

I’ve made peanut butter like this in a Vitamix, which comes with a tamper that can keep pushing the peanuts into the blade without reaching the blade. So any blender of similar power would be able to handle a big batch as shown.
Cashew butter can also be made the same way - cashews also have enough oil so you don’t need to add any oil. Other nuts may need a little extra oil.
If you don’t have such a powerful blender, you can still make peanut/nut/seed butters if you do it carefully in very small batches. Experiment to find out what your blender can handle. Maybe start with a trial handful or two. Just don’t let it overheat. Let it rest as needed. The Vitamix suggests five minutes max when making peanut butter (which is all the time it needs anyway) but a lower power blender may need shorter intervals.
If you don’t have a tamper for your blender, one can be made from a wooden dowel of a good thickness, cut to a size that stays well above the blades. You can drill a hole in the top and insert a thinner dowel horizontally (long enough to extend across the top of your blender container) so it doesn’t fall into the blades while tamping. Useful while blending other things also.

Thanks for reminding me ... I used to make my own peanut butter, though didn't add salt or oil. Sometimes, more out of laziness, I didn't peel the skins off. I liked it just as well. Also, peanut skins contain potent rich antioxidants. It has been noted that the when peanuts are consumed with their skins, their antioxidant capacity doubles and roasting can at times actually increase this capacity as well. Thanks again.

Almost everything tastes better when made at home. And when you've grown the ingredients yourself, it tastes even better. I've just done pesto sauce from homegrown basil flowers which I used to throw away before as I did not know you can use them as well as the leaves. So much better than store-bought. I don't use peanut butter but watching this has made me want to do it. Perhaps I could give it to family and friends with young children. Everyone can make do with fewer preservatives in their lives.

@@Arcadia61 Absolutely. I bought a hydroponic unit back in June. I've grown Romaine lettuce, dill, rocket, chives and a few other things, some have been a success, some not so much but it's fun experimenting with what I can grow. The flavour is far superior to anything store bought and the unit is so good, I've since bought a second one, my idea being to grow taller plants in one and shorter, dwarf varieties in the other. The Basil grows so fast I've been having to dry it and I'm currently rooting some to give to a friend. I've recently sowed a couple of dwarf cherry tomato plants and have also got dwarf French beans to start off in the second unit. I like that I can have fresh veg and herbs all year round. I've also got flat leaf Parsley growing nicely which will soon be ready to start harvesting.

Great! I’ve never used an oven to roast gnuts or even washed them the way you do! 2 new methods I’ve learnt today. I’ve used a microwave oven though and roast in small batches of a cup for 3 mins each time. In large batches it’s always in a dry pan on stove. In Uganda it is used a lot in cooking. Normally added to smoked fish, meat. Also added in fresh vegetables and delicious with sweet bananas fruit. I definitely remove the skin. Only thing worse in taste than burnt peanut butter is one with skin in it.

I really learn a lot from your videos. There are other spices we add to peanut butter here in Nigeria such as a few calabash nutmegs which we toast a bit and if you want it hot you can also add some dry pepper and blend all together with the peanuts. Some also toast some craw fish which they blend with the peanuts as well. We eat it not only with bread but it serves as a dip for garden eggs. During traditional ceremonies it is eaten with kolanuts too. It is also used to make peanut soup. Besides eating it with garden eggs, I aso enjoy it with carrots or garden eggs. The carrot/garden eggs eaten with it aids and is excellent for bowel movement if one is constipated. Thanks for sharing.

Hello, we make peanut butter. I just want to advise to someone who is trying it for the first time or is new at it some tips. You can roast peanut in a wok or large pan over very very low flame/heat stirring constantly 1kg for 30-35 min. If skin is on peanut you can use fan or blow dryer to blow away skin after roasting. Never use oil for roasting or added later . Grind sugar into powder before adding to peanut before processing 30-40 gram per 1 kg. Process peanut it takes apx 6-8 min to make peanut butter. If the machine gets hot take a break and continues after cool . The oil in the peanut will start to appear after about4- 6 min the latest ger you process the more the oil breaks down and the creamier the peanut butter. Be patient. It takes many minutes for this process to happen,6-8 min and you will arrive at peanut butter
