Thanks for sharing your failures, it gives me a bit of perspective that 3d printing is not always working perfectly for others as it seems sometimes. Gives me a bit of confidence that I could maybe do some of these things too.
I'll add from personal experience that chances of print failure go up considerably when under a time constraint. :P
Setting ambitious goals is important but you have to give yourself enough time. I love how much heart you put into it. Challenges are good. It keeps us going. It is inspiring even to watch. Just level set so you have a better chance to get what you want done. Also I'd make a really good plan before you start the challenge based on previous knowledge so you can set it all out. Nothing too elaborate just a rough of the adventure, a print plan with times, and a painting plan. Then you know what you are up against. The main thing is that you went for it. You learned from this and invited us to learn with you. Hats off to you for that my man. Keep at it. You're awesome.

Just wanted to say, this is the second time I've watched this just because I find it inspirational. I know it's an older video but thank you for the effort you put into it. You are one of the channels that made getting into 3d printing easier.
I feel like this might be one of your best videos been watching you for a while and seeing the process of you actually implementing your prints into a scenario was super interesting. Helps provide more context as to why we want to print miniatures.
I'd be interested in seeing more videos of this style in the future like trying to create scenarios with different themes/styles/puzzles/layouts using mostly 3d printing. I say mostly because that game Mat you made looked great

My goodness...you did all of that for a game? Your players should throw $100.00 bills at you! Your work is exceptional and the fact you put so much into a game for your players says volumes! Kudos!
This looks like every week for me! But after a while you have such a library of stuff that you're spending your 5 days making what might have merely just a good setup look absolutely brilliant. Great to see Markus & Ecaroth's stuff in play!

Awesome vid. Definitely would love to watch more projects in this style (Idea, crafting, painting, trouble shooting, and execution). One thing I'd add is a shot of everything as it comes together at the end, we gatta see the final pay-off!
I'm an old hand made crafting model guy and picked up the 3d ender due in part to your videos and though we've had problems as well the journey is WELL worth it. Its a tool just like my hirst arts molds. You pick the right tool for the right job. I love ambitious projects and I think you did AWESOME Buddy!!!!! GREAT JOB:)!!!!!
True what you said about realistic expectations, and a week being overwhelming. I've been printing for over 2 years now (nonstop), and still feel like my collection is lacking. It does feel like a chore, but its rewarding to have the table set up on game night, wowing the players.
Wood piles, your sticks, pot/pans, blankets. Depending on the culture, bathing, washed cloths. Lived in look is added realism, more immersing experience. Adds fun for me.
Good effort Danny. I love the idea of setting yourself challenges.
One of the common misconceptions that non printer people have is that you can just quickly print things on demand; they don't understand that not only does it take lots of time, but there's all the tinkering, adjusting, reprinting, etc involved.
From our point of view as gamers though, the idea of setting yourself challenges and targets is a fantastic one. It's all too easy to fall into the trap of wanting to quickly print that one or two models that you think would fit well into a game only to run out of time and end up not using it and become disillusioned with 3D printing as a gaming aid.
Setting a challenge encourages us to print more and print things that we might not think we need until it's too late. Having a stock of terrain or miniatures ready to go, helps bring a table to life and having that stock available (especially if they're things you wouldn't have thought to print otherwise) encourages the imagination when creating scenarios for players.
See that cool terrain on thingiverse? Print it. Now you can not just tell your players about that cool dungeon under the old derelict castle, you can show them. Underwater temple terrain set? A cool new adventure you can offer the players in the future. Want to throw a displacer beast at the party? You've already got a mini for that.
3D printing is a fantastic tool at our disposal, but it is slow. The key is to be prepared long before hand. Don't wait for a reason to print something, print it now. Set yourself a challenge and have at it. It doesn't matter if there's no immediate call for it, just pretend there is, everything can be repurposed anyway.
I feel your pain. I've spent the last few months finding, printing, and painting terrain pieces of The Yawning Portal for the Dragon Heist campaign (including NPCs and monsters). I'm still working on other terrain, but I had enough ready to start the game a couple of weeks ago. In fact, I'm currently printing sewer tiles for next Monday's game session. One thing that I've done to help transport is keep everything modular. Another advantage is that I can use each piece for multiple sessions for several scenarios and I can get everything to fit on my print bed. I've also printed multiple miscellaneous scatter terrain (crates, barrels, chests, tables, etc). It really helps fill the "blank spots" on the table and gives the players something else that can be used (or as obstacles to overcome) during combat.
Keep up the good work! It's because of people like you that I've gotten into this hobby.

Thumbs up on the effort. Sorry to see it go to the wayside like that. Back in the day a LOT of substitutions were used because we didn't have 3-D printers. One of the things I loved about the Fiery Dragon counters was that they made whole sets for the official adventurers. Great when you couldn't find real miniatures.

I want to get a 3D printer soon. I do everything the old fashioned way by making a trip to the hobby store for foam and paper printed minis for armies of baddies. All in all it takes me about 2 weeks to write, prep and build everything for my bi-weekly game. I would like to bring it up to a weekly game and from what I have seen it would take a ton or workload off my plate to just 3d print everything even with the troubleshooting.
The ability to estimate comes with experience. Having done this you'll now have a lot better idea of what this kind of endeavor takes. You've learned a lot and taken us all with you on your journey. Good job!
Finally finished this video. Awesome job. You can see the early videos and the optimism, and you can see that slowly change. I know that feeling. I have to get this printed for my next game... and my printers die. All of them, for no reason... *sigh*
I think this is a terrific idea, and I would love to see more of these. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd love to see what your campaign was, as well.
Your way way to brave for me , I would never put such a tight time constraint on preparing such an elaborate set up . As a bonus though is all the pieces will certainly be usefull in other situations so your next set piece will have a lot of pieces already

Do keep in mind, the three-day challenge had been self-imposed by yourself, so you absolutely should not feel bad about how long it has taken you to get to this point. You had an idea, and you executed it. There are many writers out there that can't even get their first chapter down on paper! You have already achieved what many people just don't have the ability to do, namely seeing something through to its completion. Frankly speaking, even though you wanted it all done in three days, I'd forget all about that imposed time limit. Your plans and scope changed after the initial plan was thought up, and you'd had a chance to look at your prototypes. I can almost feel the disappointment seeping out of you through the screen, as if you weren't able to live up to an expectation. Please don't feel like that AT ALL! I have a sense that you really want to make this something special for your players, and I get that, but judging by what you've already shown here you're really going to make them happy! Plus, its really easy to just want to add more, more more! But honestly, I think you've got a good handle on things and even with the additional print time for the monsters and then the 'bonus' round of painting, it shouldn't take all that much more time. You've done a wonderful job with all of this!

Every building challenge takes longer than expected. A 3 day shelf project took me 6 ... just the way it is and expect for added time for fails and screwups/mistakes and adjustments. I try to these days because it always takes longer than expected. Still your results are awesome and you got a lot more done than I expected a person could do in that amount of time.

Good job man. U inspired me with your excitement and even though i am super busy right now with my work and double shifts and i will continue being busy till Christmas. I already ordered the Prusa i3 Mk3 because you said is the best choice for a FDM printer. I hope i will find time to continue my tabletop and mini's painting before Christmas but for sure i am happy taht i amde the choice to buy the printer. With the thingiverse that i learn through your vids i became so excited. Till now i was building by hands terrain and it wasnot my favourite... i love painting but not so much crafting... except if is a big project. Nevertheless... good job and good channel. Go on man u are doing a very good job

We were still excited for GoT! Those were the days... I trained my dog with all GoT themed commands before the last season, oops. (Call you Banners, Bend the Knee, Swear Fealty, Play Ned, etc.) Love the channel!
Keep doing what you're doing I've been printing now for nearly 1 year I used to play 40k around 11 years ago this has inspired me to try something like you've done your channel is awesome and I've been a sub for a while now you're doing awesome keep the content coming don't change anything in how you conduct your channel all the best
Printing takes TIME, painting takes TIME. If you don't allow for extra time then you're just adding stress that you don't need. It's like people who leave 20 minutes for a 30 minute drive - they're tense and stressed out, inconsiderate pricks on the road. Whereas if you left 40 minutes for that 30 minute trip you can relax and chill on the trip. I'm just trying to say that there's no need for a timed challenge, just set the goal of building this particular encounter and go for it.
I think you did very well within the time constraints. With work and family responsibilities, getting as far as you did will take me at least a month. Well done. I'm only starting out with printing for d&d, so I'm focussing on generic items that can fit in on any adventure like supply crates and camp fires.
Ok, this was by far one of the best videos representing what to expect during a fun project build. I cannot wait for part 2. Hopefully, we will see some painting of the pieces and game play. Great work!
That's exactly what is going to be in the next one! Not as much game play, but you'll see why I need/want so many models for a single encounter. I also talk a lot about model choice, where I looked, and why I ended up going with what I did. And yes, painting just like we got some painting of the board in this one :)

One of the things that you can do that makes this a lot easier, of course is to have a lot of the stuff already printed. Yeah, I know that is obvious, but I already had the same barricades and similar shacks printed and the wood and a fire. The only thing I would have had to make was the snow covered mud terrain. Bottom line is that printing tons of stuff ahead of time that is obviously going to be used over and over makes this really quick. I can put together almost any kind of fantasy adventure in under a day and a half. Only down side is the two rooms of storage devoted to it. The cost, however, was so surprising low per piece that it is well worth it.
Absolutely true. Notice how I just dropped in the crates? I'd had those printed and use them in almost EVERY setting. They just go so well. Thanks for the comment!
I liked the mix of crafting and 3d printing. Its hard to estimate time to finish a project, a good rule of thumb I use is 3 times longer than I expect and twice as expensive.
Very nice! I like the idea of making a baseboard to set up the terrain for an encounter and have it pre-staged off table until needed. I tend to build the whole thing on the table and cover it, but that kinda makes it hard to have more than one scene ready. The whole result looks really really awesome!
Would be cool if a subscription box came up with a 1 shot and had all the stl files like you have there, just plug and play and paint and print

Great video. Loved the honest portrayal of the journey. Just ran into the same kind of situation myself trying to print terrain for a big day of playing Gaslands with my buds - didn't give myself enough time and it turned my fun hobby into a stressor. Sometimes you have to remind yourself to take your time and just have fun. Looking forward to part 2.

Not going to lie... would have raged at the lost time...! Looks great!
Nice union of build/printed items to bring it to life.
Tip for the bed level issue, it may have been due to pulling the prints from the bed vs moving the bed.
All I can suggest is building a backlog of support items that can be universally used (campfire/barrels/treasure/ect.) to reduce the stress pumping out new prints and giving you buffer for TSR (trouble shooting & repair) of your printers (my machines hate the cold...).
In a normal situation, I'd just use what I had (like I did with the crates/barrels), but the challenge was about starting fresh, so I didn't want to bring in too much that I'd already printed. Thanks for the comment, Zack!

This video was very well done, I like how far you got and I definitely had a chuckle when you laid out your plan and in three days where you'd be at but I had to wait it out and just see as I do the exact same thing although nowadays I have a massive huge collection of printed painted ready to go terrain, it's neat to see what other people use for different things and how everything turns out. Excellent paint job and I like your boxes man

How much time savings was the photon when having to print all these minis? I imagine lack of a photon would be one of the "deal-breakers" to making it in so few days. (For those unaware, resin printers can print one or multiple minis with no slowdown, due to how they work). Awesome video, keep up the great work, Danny!
It was REALLY significant - I'll go over it in detail in Part 2. I would've been able to print all of these on the Ender 3 with similar quality since these were made to be supportless, but I was using a stock FDG profile (for time reasons) and printing multiple at a time, and that profile is meant for single minis, and I didn't have time to do retraction tests and all of that.
That being said, It would have totally been possible to print up a few zombies though in a batch - it just would have required a little more cleanup using a modified profile with better retraction settings. The only issue was that I had the stringing because of the bowden tube switches, etc. I'd still suggest FDG for this because of the speed/quality ratio, and the cleanup would've been totally manageable, just taken extra time that I frankly didn't have. I'll definitely be exploring this more in Part 2 as that focuses on mini and the one-shot itself - and also talking about choices like I mentioned. Thanks for the comment and great question, Mark!

Great job! Happens all the time in real life - way over estimate what can be done, it’s a lot harder, everything breaks, you see some missing components. Have fun, figure it out, and try to be more realistic next time!

Beauuuutiful mate!!! lovely idea! i hadn't thought about this but i had already added 'hardholme' to my D&D game on the northern land mass... may need to emulate your setup for it heh
You can easily emulate the "big" feeling of it by just adding a single, long wall across your map, wherever it is. Then just add a few buildings on the other side, it will feel as big without needing to complete the circle like I was trying to! :)
Creators like you and Naomi 'Sexy Cyborg' Wu are why I'm getting into 3D printing my own miniatures and terrain. I plan to purchase an Ender 3 within the month and both yours and her videos have made the choice alot easier. Keep up the great work!

Love the video and the process! Might I suggest, if you're painting a board and putting the blackwash on it, try a dollar store foam paint roller next time. Goes on quicker and less brush marks.

Amazing video as always. Thanks for all the hard work both in making the prints and making the videos. Have you considered upgrading the springs on your bed? I got much stronger springs on Amazon. Complete life changer. I rarely have to level the bed anymore. Only if I change something, like the bed material. Or if I have to take the nozel apart for an upgrade or something. Then I have to re-level. Other than that it's great.

Bugger.... i get blockages on my bowden extruder due to the temp being too high! tried the plastic thinking it was cheap quality... nope the quality was fine! - Love the Video Danny! Rock on Mate! 10/10
Thank you! Filament is tricky, but once you get the hang of it - it isn't too bad anymore :) Most problems, I've found, stem from bed leveling and making sure that's on point.

What did you use to make the battle board I’d really like to create a few different ones to put terrain on for different environments! You should try a series like this again maybe give yourself a month to fully develop an entire 1-10 campaign or something!

Love it! I'm doing something similar with my Adventures in Middle Earth game (but not trying to compress it all into a week haha). What filament kept breaking? I notice you have Dikale in your affiliate links and I suspect that's the culprit (I definitely didn't have several prints ruined from that stuff snapping on me ;) )

It actually wasn't, Dikale! This was 3D Solutech Teal Blue from MOOOONTHS ago (talking Lost Dragons/Oct/November era) that I frankly didn't dry or anything. It did a good job 95% of the time. Just decided to do this to me during this project...of course :D
I have heard others complain about Dikale, but it has never broken on me like this - with the exception of old rolls (as old as this Zyltech) and only when NOT printing. Even my old rolls of Dikale didn't break mid-print on me (and I went through 3 of them in 3 different colors). Much more manageable to me.
@@3DPrintedTabletop I really want to like 3DSolutech - they're local to me and I know they're trying really hard to make their filaments in the US (I think I read that on Reddit) but it's so brittle. Worst story with that - I opened the vacuum bag and immediately put it in my box with the desiccants that is at 30% humidity as measured by a calibrated hygrometer. Didn't matter, it still snapped. I just looked and they have something called "Ultra PLA". I'm emailing to find out how it's different from their regular PLA.
What is the foam board you are using for the battle board?
