How can people like this song. I had to sing the solo version of it and now I have to sing the SATB version of it. What did I do to deserve this punishment...
+Jordan Keller I had to sing the satb version twice in two years and oh my god. the worst is when you know how the end is supposed to go and NO ONE ELSE does so you have to listen to people randomly ching a ring ching-ing unendingly.
@@maggieedna LOL I am one of those people randomly ching a ringing at the moment. Sorry to my fellow choir members and conductor for the pain this is causing :(
Oh, the joyful memory of singing this in high school choir more than 60 years ago. It wasn’t this exact arrangement, but I love it. Thank you for posting it.
Middle school choir. That high note (a B?) in “sun” (1:27) was optional for the 1st sopranos. I was so proud of myself for reaching it. Good to find this song again.
To some commenting below: Aaron Copland took great care to adapt this song to exclude anything that might be construed as racist. There is nothing racist about imitating a strummed banjo or guitar (which is what ching-a-ring is about), nor is there anything racist about nonsense syllables (plenty of examples of such syllables from music of all cultures). Most important, there is nothing racist about dreaming of a promised land that is a paradise compared to your current miserable life -- indeed, that's a constant theme in most older African-American spirituals and songs, and often (though not in this case) it was even code for escaping to freedom. So, what seems racist about this version of the song?
Wise words. I personally love this song. We preformed it at Carnegie Hall in high school as part of a collaboration of several several schools. This was 20 years ago and now I'm kicking myself because I no longer remember who our highly esteemed conductor was. Harmony is a beautiful thing
@Photography2016 we sang it for our all state concert. One of the crowd's favorites. It's fantastic especially when we're all just 7th-9th grade. So if it is dumb to you then maybe you should either stop singing in a choir and see how selling singles will work out. Or learn to cope with the fact that your choir sucks or your mind cannot comprehend it's "Epicness"
Uhhhhh it's better in the new rendition. This is weird for my ears. I'm used to "Lightning flashing round hear the rolling thunder judgment day is near we'll see the heavens wonder."
Ha oh my. My choir class gotta sing this. We have a huge choir class. But not much guys. Like 4 bass and 3 tender kinda of funny. But the tender us louder than us altos. Aha. Gotta sing this in my freshman year. Some sophomores. Ahh let's see if we do good:p
Only now as an adult do I realize how racist this song is and how wrong my high school teacher was for making us sing this. Idc about the lyrics so called “not being racist” this was a minstrel show song ! A song to degrade black ppl so no singing this song will NEVER be okay and shame on any teacher or director that puts this in their repertoire! It’s 2020 ppl we know better so let’s do better
Aaron Copland rewrote the lyrics to make it not seem Racist, they are singing the rewritten version as seen in the description. I can see why you think it might be racist, but it is simply not true.
Are you stuck in the past? Sometimes I am, too. This song has a natural joy and ebullience that needs to be in the present and appreciated for itself, broken free golf any past association. you can’t and won’t control other people, just as the excesses of capitalism (slavery) failed, too. Oh, by the way, as history does matter, it is good of you to point out the sings origins, or past usage, whichever it may be, but censorship is censorship.
Okay I didn't mean to offend you.. I'm sorry!! D: It wasn't really the song I guess, it was how my substitute director taught it to us... Our usual director was on maternity leave. I'm sorry I really didn't mean to offend you or anything...
Man I miss those times in 6th grade choir learning that song. I still clearly remember the lyrics. and it's been almost 20 years.
So nostalgic! I sung this back in 5th grade! Now I'm a senior. Ah the good ol' days.
Me too
Was supposed to sing this in fifth grade but then covid happened
Amazing. I sang this in 5th grade in 1978!

I was Sop 1 when my choir did this... I absolutely hated it.
It's a fun song but like it's not even real words so it's hard to learn it. At least it is for my class XD
It’s alright but that ending is just oh my God
Excellent!
From "Old American Songs".. All of them are deceptively difficult.
Crazy how this song is widely performed when it's a minstrel piece.
I sang this with my choir in either jh or hs...can't remember when...i just remember it was really hard to learn.

Awesome. :D
It definitely takes a lot of practice and a lot of patience on the director’s part and the members’ part to be able to perform this arrangement.
my seventh grade choir is doing this song. Oh god.
