  • There is no Hawai’i, without Hawaiians & sad reality is, there are more Native Hawaiians out of Hawaii, then in Hawaii | ‘Living Like a Hawaiian’, slowly comes to life! 💓 but first…..
I would like you to meet Brandon, the Deputy Head of State at Nation of Hawaii and someone I was blessed to connect with on this culturally immersive voyage through Native Hawaiians.
Ive met hula dancers, humu hula, farmers, native languages speakers, and activists across the islands. But having time with Brandon within the confines of the 45 acres that are Puuhonua o Waimanalo, showed me a whole new side to Kanaka Maoli, politics! Like the late Haunani Trask said , “sovereighty is Government”, meaning this element of Hawaiian culture and narratives, is just as vital as any other for what is the end goal for: Land Back! ✊🏽
“Living Like A Hawaiian” is a deep years long immersive experience in the cultural elements that thrive today. But it is also very much a documentary like experience into the dark realm of sufferent and pain for Kanaka maoli against the forces of colonialism, militarianism, and 100+ years of anti-aloha aina. All of which have had severe consequences for its indigenous people!💔
Putting this project together has been a struggle in itself from trying to fund it, getting translations late or at all, and simply never doing anything like this before. But I am giving it absolute best for whom it’s intended for, kanaka maoli: both on āina and far and wide! 💚💛
Big mahalos to Bumpy, Brandon, and the Nation of Hawai’i for taking the time for this voyager as what they shared beautifully weaves into 20 other Hawaiians time🌺

I don’t think I will ever visit Hawai’i again as a tourist unless I’m only going to give back to the community financially. It broke my heart being there this summer. I pray for justice. I pray for protection of the land and the people

Born and raised on oahu, now living in texas. I still have family living back home but i fear they're all gonna move soon. Im 24 now and a harsh reality is that im most likely never gonna have the chance to go back home to live out the rest of my life comfortably, all i have is memories unfortunately

Moved away 7 years ago. Hardest thing I’ve ever done. I broke something in me when I left. I have breakdowns almost every month because I am so home sick. I miss my home. I miss my people. I feel that calling every day.

The āina misses you! That empty mess and calling is not for no reason! I hope and pray you find your way back, even through the obstacles

Great video. This concerns me. My family might have to leave soon. My husband's job doesn't pay enough for rent, food, etc. Can no longer go eat at restaurants no more. Too many foreigners and mainlanders coming here and pricing us all out. My best friend who is Native Hawaiian left 5 years ago because she could no longer afford Hawaii. Upsetting and Sad that these foreign investors are pushing us out, and politicians do nothing, exept Brenton Awa and a few others like Augie T.

What about all the hawaiians who leave there trash everywhere and have 10 flipped cars in there yard and 10 dirty dangerous pit bulls running around neighborhoods, are they closely connected to the Aina?

Kind of a vague thing to say but if we are talking about the select Hawaiian who might do that. I ask you, how do you think some of those Hawaiians got that way? Even that number is no where close to numbers that wreck these islands.

@AK2HI yep, big island was my first pacific island and had the opportunity to go back last year. Again not sure what particular group of people you’re referring to, but I will say there are a lot of ex convicts and lost troubled individuals over there. Most of them aren’t Hawaiian!
