As a 1990 Bentley Turbo R and 2003 Azure owner this is a great and realistic review of the ownership experience of an Arnage and pretty much any SZ 6.75L turbo model. When big things fail, and one or two will, the bills are large. In between those bills the driving experience is unmatched, once you discount the inevitably large fuel bills. Buy the best you can afford is definitely the right mantra to follow and don't skimp on the annual servicing, otherwise it will bite you.
@@RootBeerGMT I spent over £30k getting the brakes, suspension, headlights, cruise control, aircon, steering rack, seat controls and stereo fixed on the Turbo R. Paint still needs doing and that is around £45k including all prep work. For the Azure I’ve spent around £4k getting the roof to work after 2 of the 8 tubes that fire the roof open exploded.
Love your color! I own a black 2007 Arnage R Mulliner in Canada 🇨🇦 since 2018 and love it just as much to this day. The feeling while driving it is like no other. You feel imperious on the road. It’s a unique driving experience. And the oohs and ahs are never ending. Other than the usual fuel and maintenance costs I’ve only had to dole out $4,000 🇨🇦 on repairs (replace both fuel pumps) and that’s it in 5 years!
You did right buying a post-2007 car as the engines had received significant upgrades by that year model. Prior to 2007 the best for reliability and running costs was the original 4.4 'Green label'.
My 2 cents: join the RR/B owners club first, then consider buying one of theirs. Get one of the member/experts to inspect whatever car you find. You also get into the network for advice and where to get service (don't go to the dealer). Had both of my Bentleys for several years and actually MADE money on them.
Great advice! I would recommend anyone buying any classic car to join the relevant owners club. They are often a great source of knowledge and enthusiasm and could save you thousands in the long run.
Great review.. and pretty much mirrors my ownership. The 6.75 Arnage was my dream car for the last 15 years, so 2 years ago I finally took the plunge. However, it’s the best purchase I’ve ever made and the looks you get driving it is something else. In my 2 years of ownership I have spent around 10k on work (which included the dreaded head gasket). I also use mine as a daily drive which turns around 9MPG. Expense yes but who wants to drive a heavily depreciating new Corsa, and also you only live once.
That's great to hear you're enjoying Arnage ownership. They're wonderful cars and the money you have spent should keep it in tip-top condition for many years and miles to come. Life is far too short to drive dull cars!
I love your honest review on this car and I applaud you for owning one for three years. Hope you enjoy it for a lot longer. I'm Dutch and The Netherlands is a horrible country to own cars. The fuel prices are some of the highest in Europe, road taxes are a lot higher than in Britain, we have stupidly high import taxes on new cars (some even doubling the price of a car), we don't have cheaper insurance for older cars (except maybe when the car is 40+ years old and is considered an oldtimer then) and some cities have limited space for such big cars. After scouring some car websites, the cheapest Bentley Arnage I could find was €33000. And most of them are 50K+. I would love to own one of these, but that won't happen anytime soon. I am happy with my cheap 20 year old Jaguar X type and love the looks people give me. It's always positive comments and I hope you receive that with your Bentley as well. Please keep up the good work and keep it on the road!
Thank you! Yes I have heard that it can be difficult to run these kind of cars in the Netherlands. We are lucky that Classic insurance is cheap and road tax is reasonable for anything pre 2006 at the moment. Although, it does currently cost £210 (€245) to fill it up.
@jan rap I don't want to flood the comments in dutch, so I'll just answer in english. My budget doesn't reach the values for those cars. I was also looking at the Bentley just for fun and personal interest. But I will admit I have looked at the 420g seriously and consider buying one as a second car. Whenever I have the money for that, so maybe in 10 years? At the moment, I am elated with my green X-type. I have it 5 months now and it cost me 3000 euro to buy it secondhand and 250 euros in service (new coolant reservoir and new bonnet insulator). Those cars are cheap now because apparently they are unwanted in the Netherlands.
Why are that costs in the Netherlands so high as there are many classics dealers as A.P. Brummen or gallery Aaldering, and others, who sell plenty of old cars per year? Why dont register the car in France or Luxembourg? Insurance and road tax are cheap, the french dropped long ago the luxury tax on cars.
No amount of refined engineering can eliminate faults. I really enjoy a very different car, the e53 2006 4.4 BMW X5, which has a beautiful Bentley rolling motion on the highway. I’ve had it since 2008 and an absolute pleasure to drive but then… $27000AU was paid on parts replacement, service and maintenance over the past 6 years! The main issues concern plastic parts in the engine bay which deteriorate quickly. I’ve replaced the rocker cover and sump gaskets, cooling system, cv joints, window regulators, DISA valve, oil filter housing, alternator, and a lot of work was done to eliminate the rattling noise over uneven surfaces. You’re never likely to have any trouble w/ the gear box, differential, the engine block and drive train. On a Bentley of this age, be prepared for the unexpected fault, which will likely be the electronic systems, oil sump gasket (to replace on a Bentley is £6000!), hoses, gaskets, and plastic parts in the engine bay. Nothing on even a great car lasts forever. For a vintage Bentley of the 2000 era, I would put away £4000 per annum in an interest earning savings account in reserve for that fateful, miserable day.
At 79 i took the plunge and have purchased a Red Label 2000 Arnarge, took it to my local ( non Bentley ) garage who has maintained similar local cars for some years, i bought it from a Bentley specialist repair and second hand sales garage, but was on tenterhooks for if i had made a bad buy. I did take the advice from several web site and bought the best i could afford. Although finding 11 small 'faults' e.g jubillee clip missing from chrome tail pipe, mudflaps need re securing etc and gave it a good report as a solid and genuine well-maintained vehicle. Still getting to grips with the enormity of driving a car where the bonnet is far down the road, but i am improving and hope to actually enjoy it soon.
Fantastic that you have taken the plunge and I hope you enjoy every mile. They really are very special cars, and unlike almost anything else. Happy motoring!
As a RR 1984 Silver Spirit owner, I think it is what your priorities are. Some people want 6 kids, some people want a huge motor home, or a yacht or a summer home on a lake. I luv my Rolls. It rarely breaks down but when it does it does get expensive occasionally.
I did a lot of research on this car and found it to be the best of Bentley' car ever made. I personally don't care about performance, size of engines like V8's and V12's and super charges but I do care about quality and luxury and this car has it. I would be happy with the 4.4 green label The dash is these are the best ever. This car is just gorgeous.
I have always found it very interesting how the status of a particular engine overrides their practical reasoning that might make a better car. They put a four cylinder 2ltr engine in a F Type Jaguar and Mustang and they were very practical and balanced and surprisingly they handled very well, but the were a flop because the ignorant buyer wanted a V6 or a V8. Today most ignorant motorists want V12's in both Bentley's and RR. Modern societies today fantasise and idolise and when humans do that they become blind followers.
I looked briefly at this model , and quite frankly I was drawn to the Silver Shadow but even with the very best available , the cost of something going wrong frightened me . I should point out that I am a classic car nut and currently have in my collection a simply gorgeous Humber Imperial from 1966 which is the most underated car of all time so bits going wrong is a fact with old cars . However I did not go down the Rolls Bentley route , but instead I found a car that was better in every respect according to the magazines of the time , I found a series 3 Daimler double six with just 15k on the clock and perfect as new condition in Japan . I re patriated it and today it simply eclipses all other cars. I get 21 mpg on the motorway and the silence of the car just has to be experienced .
I have also looked at a Silver Shadow from time to time and briefly owned a Silver Spirit. Unfortunately the potential for big bills is a very real possibility on any of them. I tend to budget £2-3k a year for general maintenance (which of course can easily be exceeded if it requires something out of the ordinary). For me it is still very much worth it. A Humber is a great choice and my only experience being a drive in Super Snipe, which was brilliant. You may enjoy the video I’ve done on the Double Six which is certainly one of my all time favourites.
@@fuelupclassic Thats interesting you found the SuperSnipe brilliant , in that case , if you wernt aware , the Snipe was made at Ryton in Coventry but the Imperial was coachbuilt at Thrupp and Maberley and appointed very lavishly . I believe the big Humbers represent the most crushing value for money when compared to the inferior big Rovers . Although the Daimler is motoring magnificence , I still get something of a thrill when driving the Imperial .
I looked at buying the green label model Arrange with the 4.4ltr engine about six years ago. However like you after talking to guys who had work on them they scared me out of one. Not the engine so much, because that 4.4ltr BMW was a good engine. But it was the other mechanical things about the car. I always wanted a Humber Imperial because I had the Super Snipe which was the very last of them. The only thing I did not like about was the fact that it did not have power steering, which the Imperial did have. About six years ago, when I was looking for a luxurious car and not a modern so called luxury car, I had to go back to the 90's to find what I wanted. I bought a very low milage 1996 Jaguar XJ6 X330 long wheel base model, and that has been a pleasure to own and drive. I turned down all the sports and the XJR models etc, as their suspension's are not designed for comfort. Finally my choice was made on the car that was the best value for money, being the best condition, rather than what others would have chose or wanted. It is always nice to meet others with finer tastes.
Hi Jonathan, Its not often that one meets someone with similar tastes. I also owned a Humber Super Snipe. I could not find the imperial in Australia. any way the last of the super snipes I had was a fantastic car except it did not have the power steering like the imperial. My second car I bought in the 70's was a Daimler soverign XJ6. Six years ago I purchased a 1996 Jaguar XJ6 X330 the long wheel version of the X300. Mine had 80,000K's on the clock. You did very well to find your Daimler with such low milage. Fortunately for me, I don't need a V12 as the police won't let me drive any of my cars any faster than 110kph. Anyway the main point that I would like to make is that it is almost impossible to find modern car that are real luxury cars like the many of the cars of the past. The gap has narrowed between a common family car and the so called modern luxury car, so much so, that most modern luxury cars are not good value for money unless you just want specs, gadgets and a fashion brand car name. Even the modern Jaguars could be any car in the interior and the nice classicdisa curves are slowly disappearing. Good luck with your choice Jonathan and I hope you have it for a long time. 👍
Excellent review, you have now given me the excuse for buying a Bentley, I think you are spot on with buying the best you can find, I started restoring a 1971 XKE and ended up buried into it and sold at a huge loss, I realize that buying a Bentley is a folly but those moments when quietly wafting down the road make it all worth while! Thanks again for a great review!
Thank you and I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Ohh yes any old car can easily burn money, especially a Jaguar or Bentley but the moments when you’re able to truly enjoy it are worth it.
The colour-combination in- and outside of your car is very amazing. I own a 2004 Arnage T and it is one of my best cars in my little collection. The damping is a little bit harsher then yours, but the comfort is great and has awesome power. And then you close the door, the world outside is .... outside.. and you are in your own world. I love my T.
You didn't have to say a word. We agree 100% and that was my favorite design by Bently and I like it better than today's looks. (Audi/Volkswagen) when kids wanted an new Lamborghini, I wanted the Bently.
Someone parked a for sale Bentley Arnage on the street in front of our house in NJ and we are enjoying looking at and thought we would do more research. Your video was fun and informative and your passion for this vehicle is contagious! Thanks.
I owned a RR. costs are never ending ..the enjoyment I got was totally offset by the stress & cost of ownership.. If you are well cashed up..then go for it ...you can allways onsell ..and get it out of your system .
As soon as I heard the words,".....a six litre, turbo charged Bentley instead" I had to give this a thumbs up. I too am prone to bouts of passion and madness from time to time....and I have the evidence of that in my garage right now. This latest one is the best, and worst example of that madness. Now let me watch this lovely video.
I’ve had my Arnage now nearly 5 years. Absolutely love it. It’s in the Sept Rolls Royce and Bentley Drivers magazine 2022. 7 page feature. Mine is Tempest Silver. Drives like new and handles superb. Has real road presence. Never misses a beat.
@@BibtheBoulder And indeed - we bought our Arnage Green label from you which has been pretty-much faultless in the three years we have had it. Regards, Mark & John!
I love the arnage..had a 1993 turbo r...cost me a fortune on maintenance had the 6.75 litre turbo engine..now own a 2009 last of the xj jaguars..drives faultless..cost me £13,500 bought from guy salmon ..jaguar..not far off from the bentley..a great alternative 👍
Great review of an Arnie - the best review we have seen so far. Three year's ago we bought a 1998 Arnage Green Label (the one with the BMW engine that came from the 640i at the time). It was immaculate inside and also nearly as good outside. It had 60000 miles on the clock and we bought it for the princely sum of £13.500! It was one of the first 86 cars that was actually coach-built by Rolls Royce, as, as you said in your video, it shares the same design shape as their Silver Seraph . There is a metal plaque in the driver's side door to attest to this. At the time, BMW and VW were still arguing over who was going to take on the brand - and this is why we think this happened. It was well-sorted but here is what we have spent in three years to make it top-hole and to keep it on the road... Three of the four wheel arches were just starting to show rust. These were made good and painted, plus the front end (as this blunt front end around the light clusters is a stone chip magnet) - £1100 We also had the whole underside of the car rust-proofed with a Hot Fog treatment - £800 The worst fail we had were two rear shock absorber bushes which were a Bentley part. So a set of two for a Ford Moneo = £40. Bentley's price = £845 for the pair. The left indicator stalk failed and this is a known problem as it can be knocked easily when getting in and out of the car. We were able to fix it, but if not that would have been another £400 - for a re-conned part. £850 for a new one, if you can find one! The best news is the annual servicing costs. As it is effectively a BMW 640i engine, our annual service, rather than costing £1200, can be done with your local automotive shop for only £199!!! Try that with a Red Label or Arnage T model... OK - the first two items on the list are classed as remedial items. But the bushes would have been an MOT failure so had to be done. So we have spent £1445 over the course of two years (£482 per year) to keep it on the road plus the MOT's, which is amazing really. Let's not talk about how much petrol we have thrown at it though... So you are right. Buy it once and buy it right, and Arnie is still going strong and still servicing us well. But we service it well too! A massive shout out to Mark Brown Automotive of Downham Market, who did an amazing job of the paint job and also to In 'N' Out Autocentres in Wisbech who has looked after the car since we got it. Ben, Dan and Brad there are amazing.
Thank you and I hope you enjoyed the video. I plan to do a lot more with the Arnage this year, so will post regular videos as and when I do. There's a lot of myths (and some truths) surrounding the costs of Arnage ownership, so it's great to hear from fellow owners, who have experienced a pleasant long-term ownership experience. I hope you enjoy yours for many years to come.
We have a 2002 Arnage T, and I love it! For the record, the single turbo models had the head gasket problem, but the T models suffered from cam failure - ours had a new short block at 27,000 miles, conscientiously dealt with by an earlier owner. Ours has now done over 70k miles and it's still amazing - the car that Mr. Clarkson described as a cathedral that can power-slide! Indeed, cars that get used rather than stored have significantly fewer problems. However, there is now an odd problem with parts for Arnages - Bentleys both older and newer have plenty available, but they're literally running out for Arnages, even direct from Bentley - we can't get an electric boot release for love nor money... But thank god for Introcar and Flying Spares - if you'll be avoiding main dealers, your specialist mechanic will get to know them... We'll keep the car though, as it's so capable and majestic - ours is in the Corniche Iridium Gold and it's a lovely, easy drive, but it's so tempting to make it roar and reel-in the horizon! Great review video of a great car.
Thank you for watching and it is great to hear that a fellow Arnage owner enjoyed it. All of what you say is completely true, parts availability can be a little hit and miss these days, but I believe Introcar and Flying Spares are working on finding solutions to most of those parts NLA from Bentley. Yours sounds like a lovely car and if I was to get another, a T would be top of the list. I hope you continue to enjoy it for many more years and miles to come. Matt
Excellent review and very sensible and practical advise. The 6.75 engine was resurrected after VW's acquisition of Bentley and finding that using the newer BMW V8 was no longer an option. Despite the enormous amount of re engineering required to get it to fit, this was still the cheapest route. Sadly the problems associated with the Turbo R's head gasket were inherited by the Arnage. Never the less when replaced it's an outstanding car.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. I completely agree, the Arnage certainly did inherit the same engine issues as the Turbo R, but once they’ve been sorted and most have by now, they really are outstanding.
As of late June 2023, probably the overall very best luxury vehicle is made by Korea's Hyundai (Genesis Group). That is to be followed by Mercedes-Benz of Germania. Then comes Bentley and Rolls, some Aston-Martins also, but of course at completeley verrückten prices. Cadillac is still in the line-up, but sadly Lincoln now only churns out those hideous SUVs.
I owned the 4.4 litre V8 Green Label version of this car about 20 years ago. It had suprisingly better MPG than the 6.75 litre and with the Cosworth Twin-turbos, very quick off the mark.
I've never had an Arnage but I did have a 1948 Bentley Mk.6. Driving it was a delight. In a Bentley you enter the car, point it in the direction you want and after a suitable passage of time you arrive. not much seems to happen in between. No doubt the Arnage is similar.
Never even heard of an Arnage until I walked by one in a crazy part of SOUTH ST in Philidelphia with rock bars, bizzare shops, tourists etc. This Burgundy Arnage was absolutely stunning. This was about twenty years ago so it was one of the first ones. The Hungarian owner was very nice an let me look inside it.
I have one of these (present) and i have it 2ish years and the only thing is the buttons on the console is easy to pop off and the ac, gas is crazy expensive, since i drive all day (working). You should definitely get one,
@@be5952 Thank you so much for the suggestion: Given that this car was ahead of it’s time and really not that old. It’s actually modern for the most part. Granted, it was designed and manufactured in 2000 yet, it not only define luxury but the driving dynamics even with its hefty weight achieves balance performance married with sensuous comfort in sight, sound and speed. At times, the smiles leave you speechless. My CLS400 is sexy, beautiful and light. It is an excellent daily driver both in performance and comfort. The displays are easy on the eyes, but too repetitive in the instrumental panels and switches. As to my statement to loving the Bentley Arnage more, it’s because it’s a vehicle that has proven to last beyond it’s time and is still relevant in the car industry. This car makes a statement, not in an august or pompous manner but stately elegance without dishing out oodles of money to own and maintaining one. In the hands of the right owner maintaining this vehicle along with a knowledgeable and trusted mechanic willing to sacrifice expertises, one may see these vehicles on the road for another 22 years if parts would still be available.
I remember walking along Baker Street in 2003 and while a Bentley Arnage passed slowly, it turned so many heads. It had incredible presence on the road.
@@fuelupclassic It was, a great British car in a great British City_ it was a very posh sight. In that congested traffic, it went slow. I paused and I looked and thought "wow". But only a handful could afford it then and still now.
Excellent review of a superb car, the driving experience with these as with the Turbo R is unforgettable. The feeling of sitting at the wheel and the higher driving position is a "see all" feeling that never leaves you. The head gasket issue is a sad reality with these, and the Turbo R but as you say find one that has had the job done and you should be OK generally. The electrics can be a problem as the car ages and as you say, a very good independent maintenance workshop is a saviour. These are classics in every sense of the word and will give absolutely miles of driving pleasure and comfort. Thanks for this, absolutely brilliant!
It’s alright buying the Bentley, it’s the upkeep and fuelling them is the problem. The colour of your Bentley is absolutely beautiful fella, I have a Lexus Ls600h, now there is a quiet car and build quality to die for, I won’t mention the reliability as you’ll think I’m bragging.
You're absolutely right there! Buying one is the easy bit, it's keeping it in tip-top condition that requires quite a lot of time and money, but for me it's still worth it. An LS600h is a lovely car. Quality, understated, beautiful engine and a huge amount of car for the money. Don't tell me too much about the reliability or I may get very jealous haha. Happy motoring.
I am in lust with the Arnage, a magnificent looking car, one I have always admired. I do like the Silver Seraph also but the Arnage just pips it to the post.
I'd argue that the Arnage wasn't the first time in decades that Bentley stepped away from Rolls-Royce, the earlier Turbo R really did that, especially the later more powerful ones. I bought a 1996 one last year, it's costing a fortune to get everything working as it should but I still love it. These later Vickers cars really have something special to them, and were made in much fewer numbers than the current Bentley lineup.
@@RootBeerGMT Biggest single item was getting the wheel arches done. Rear ones needed completely replacing and the front ones needed patching up a fair bit. Then just a lot of things that all add up, like new tyres (~ £400 each), new condenser for the air con, replacement alarm module, etc etc. I'm happy to say since my last post I've spent a lot less on it, hopefully it will stay that way for a good while.
This is the best car I've ever seen. My dream car. Used to play with my benetly cars as a kid. My favourite colour. Amazing. I'd be be looking for a £25000 one.
We have just completed 2,500 miles across Portugal & Spain in our 98 Continental R. The R is 2 door and dare I say, a lot more elegant than the Arnage but has virtually the same running gear. Cruising at 75mph the tacho reads around 1500 rpm, at this pace we averaged 21mpg. Of course it's not a daily driver when home so fuel cost is less important. There's a quirkiness to the Bentley and some of the switches are a bit awkward but that 7ltr V8 is ultra smooth and power comes on with grace. Occasionally you hear that enormous Turbo charger spooling up and when it does, hold on... Brilliant bit of kit.
I hope you had a brilliant trip. A Continental R is a wonderful way to travel. I'd love to get one some day. We've just come back from a trip to France in the Arnage and as you say cruising along at 75mph it's incredibly unstressed and even managed 20+ mpg with 5 people and a boot full of luggage. I hope you enjoy your Bentley for many more years and miles to come.
@@fuelupclassic Thanks for that - whilst there was only 2 of us my wife had managed to pack most of the contents from our 4 bedrooms along with everything else we never got around to using. We had a great time but it's always risky in a 25 year old car. As it happens, nothing happened, even drifting though slow moving traffic in the late 30's the temp gauge only moved up a tiny notch and that was that. The reaction from the locals was amazing, they knew it was a Bentley but that's were it ended. Anycase, we got into many conversations with the car and to me that's what it's all about. Taking time to show people these rare machines from an enthusiasts standpoint and not a flash git standpoint (if you know what I mean)
Some people dis the idea that Bentley has switches from BMW or some Jags have switches from Ford, but when you drive a 20+ year old car, it is just an advantage that they are commonly available parts.
I love your passion. Great review. My father always wanted one and I would like to get one or a long wheel base turbo R, but I worry about repairs cost. I hear there are forums with good ideas regarding replacing part with more reliable cheaper parts that don’t affect the Bentley experience, like chev starter motors, Toyota fuel pumps, modern alternators etc that boot straight into place. That sounds good to me long term. Early Head gasket fails is a big job and unacceptable for a quality car. A Honda engine will do 300,000KM no problem. But of course a Honda is not a Bentley lifestyle experience.
Excellent review and very eloquently described experience, thank you! I've wanted to record similar video for a long time about my dream car (Jaguar VandenPlas) and was literally thinking in the same lines in my "script"! Cheers!
nice review ---- friend just bought one for a wedding car and chaffeur /// lets see etc .... /// think audio output on video fraction low maybe ... could be my computer ... tick vid ..
Had one of these for about 3 years. Agree with your review. Watch out for wipers that swich on without the switch!!! And bad ground connections. And they don’t much like RON 95 fuel as they can pink; I filled up with BP Ultimate.
Ohh I haven’t had the wiper issue! How did you find your ownership experience over three years? The only out of the ordinary repair has been a broken indicator stalk and £1,000 repair bill to put it right. You’re quite right about the fuel, this one is only ever run on BP Ultimate.
@@fuelupclassic Once I had the niggly issues put right, I had no problems. Hillier Hill in Olney, Bucks. dealt with everything. Specialists in all things Bentley & RR.
You must have really got to know the Arnage very well during that time. Did you prefer the Red Label or T? I still find the performance great fun and it's far quicker than it has any right to be :)
@fuelupclassic7003 Unfortunately the first two were not great reliability wise nice to drive but my boss was always late. The T handed so much better may be the lower profile tyre but was a lovely car to drive 5/7 days mostly under pressure
Always loved these, the most elegant (in a nightclub bouncer in a tuxedo way) Bentley ever made. Sadly the potential for sub 10mpg ruled it out for me so I bought a Jaguar XJ instead,
Love this review. I agree that whether it's worth it depends on what each individual's priorities are. For me, buying a car is an emotional process. I'd rather own a car that I love driving, looking at, and sitting in, even if it means I'll have to spend a pretty penny on a few issues that crop up with them from time to time, as opposed to an appliance that gets me from A to B and never breaks down.
Thank you! You sound like a true fellow petrolhead 🙂 we certainly don’t always do things the sensible way but buying any classic car is always a decision made with the heart, it’s just whether for the individual that risk/reward factor is worth it.
Great video. Sensible advice, can’t quibble anything. My Arnage has 160,000 miles. I did by low and spend high. My choice to ensure it was put right to my standards. Agreed, this is indeed a ‘Flagship’ Bentley.
Here in the states you can actually find an affordable example that has been well maintained with records for around $40,000. The thing is with these are the parts availability. "Flying Spares" has a lot of parts and can source them as well, but if that electronic transmission actuator fails...good luck if you can source one or hopefully get it repaired. Beautiful cars...always liked this particular Bentley.
They do offer an incredible amount of car for the money but many people fail to keep up with maintenance, which can lead to really big bills. I have been told that some parts for the earliest examples (BMW engine) are sometimes hard to find but Flying Spares usually have everything you need.
'never fails to disappoint'? Forgive my pedantry: 'never fails to surprise/please' or 'never disappoints.' Easily done when you're concentrating on something else. Great video.
What boggles me is how the head gasket and camshaft issues could even be a thing. This engine has been in production for such a long time that there's really no excuse. Also, there's been so many different iterations of the turbo'd motor that it's not like they don't have the research.
The problem with the head gasket was solved with the introduction of the Arnage, they used the wonderful and throughly modern BMW V8. The car was never designed to accommodate the old engine and when VW could no longer use the BMW engine an enormous amount of re engineering was required to get the old engine to fit. Despite this it was both available and by far the cheapest option. When sorted they are an outstanding car, everyone should own one !
No expert. But if you turbo and up the power over even the old turbo r then you can run into issues such as gasket failure that you never had when the engine was much less stressed
I’ll never own one ‘sadly’ however I would love one . My Dad had a beautiful Jaguar Etype back in the 70’s ‘ but I always aspired to own a Bentley . He thought I was mad but I believe he’d agree with now . Unfortunately circumstances have stopped me from ever being a custodian of one these superb carriages. However’thank you for this experience’ and I wish you well in future ownership . Lucky lad ✊
@@fuelupclassic Oh wow 😮’ thank you so very much for your kind comment’ more so your very kind offer ☺️. Hopefully we will meet on the same path eventually 🤞’ and best wishes to you for the future. Thoroughly enjoyed your video’ it really gives a true experience 👍
I really like the Arnage and want to own one someday. They’re beautiful cars and are pretty affordable for those of us who aren’t millionaires. Gotta make sure you buy one in good condition because you may find yourself stuck with an average repair bill of around $20k.
In my experience it costs roughly £2,000 - £3,000 a year on routine maintenance at a reputable specialist. However, it does have the ability to throw some big bills your way if something major should fail.
You have to remember in those days the highest tax rate 97.5%. You could also offset your taxes against the purchase of a Company car. This meant that if the Bentley cost £155,000:you only had to pay £3875.00 if you did not buy it you had to give the tax man £151,125, if you were paying top rate tax. Not a bad deal. Of course this was changed shortly when the government limited the cost of a company car to something like £3000.
Love your train of thought Nissan Leaf / Ford Fiesta or Arnage ?? Its a no brainer The Arnage all day long !, You buy a car to put a smile in your face , give me a real car like the Arnage or another Classic /Marquee compared to the drab & souless new stuff they do today, Great Video !
Just attended the RROC (Rolls Roycve Owners Club) annual summer national meet in the U.S. There was an Arnage there selling for $18,000. Others were a bit higher. Today I would not realy spend over $25-28,000 for one, unless it's totally in mint tip-top shape with really low miles.
FINALLY - finally a high-end car guy that talks absolute sense, sense based upon absolute reality. The internet has sadly unleashed a million 'experts' all, most of whom should not be allowed anywhere near advice giving. I've been with Cadillac 45 years, Rolls-Royce just about 30 years. These super-cars, they are super-cars can be if bought properly utter joy and life-enhancing. Bought foolishly they'll take all your money, apart from that your wife takes as she divorces you. I am not kidding. The absolute key to what this man tells you is the phrase 'living with these cars'. I remember the 1970s, I loved them, but sadly there were many so-called professional auto-writers that borrowed a Rolls, Cadillac or Mercedes over the weekend and returned Monday morning full fledged experts. Most then wrote rubbish. You wouldn't believe the long term ownership I've had of fine cars to prove this. You can only ever make a judgement about expensively built luxury cars after, as our friend here says, you have lived with them. That's going to the supermarket for boring hopping, yes collecting your family and friends at the station and it's touring, taking the car to the French Riviera, roughly 900 miles from London (and back), experiencing them like this tells you what they are all about. Finally, service and maintenance, that's two different things by the way. Those that subscribe to the age-old maxim there's nothing wrong with it so leave it alone, these are fools. These csars need careful care and attention. Remember that even the service schedules in workshop manuals were written for cars that were either new or a few years old. Rarely, if ever do manufacturers print manuals to take account of the care required for a 20, 30 or 40 odd year old car. They must be looked after properly. First class film.
I wonder what operating costs are like, how much should you put to one side each year for insurance and when you need servicing or parts. It’s not going to be Nissan Leaf 🍃 now… and what is fuel range like for your 200 pound fill up cost.
In general it’s not too bad considering what it is. Insurance is very cheap, as they are now eligible for a classic policy. This one has always been serviced exactly to Bentley’s recommendations (so an oil change at the very least every six months regardless of miles covered etc). On average it does around 15mpg (less if you really enjoy it) and of course it can occasionally surprise you with a large bill. Budget circa £2-3k a year to keep it in tip-top condition.
What about range anxiety? I travel near Crewe regularly and used to see these on test, most of them left hand drive. Today, the modern ones don’t have the same kudos.
Thank you for watching. I'd love to feature a Mulsanne on the channel in the near future. I used to be slightly on the fence about them but as time has passed, they have really grown on me and i'd love to own one at some point. Also they are the last Bentley to have the 6.75 litre V8, which already makes them a bit of a legendary car.
Nice informative review. I am just about to sell my RR shadow 2 for one of these. Luckily enough I have my own repair shop but my last Bentley, a turbo r model still cost a fortune in parts even using a specialist like Flying Spares here In the UK. Used to make me chuckle every time I stopped for fuel someone would ask how many miles to the gallon it did..... it never mattered to me because it was all about the feeling of driving something special and if that cost me 75 quid for a good Sunday run, then it was money well spent.
The problem with luxury cars is that their parts, whilst unique to each model, are typically made out of exactly the same metal, rubber or plastic as any other car so for example any equivalent suspension component won't really last any longer in a Bentley than in a Passat.
Great video of a great car - but you mention it you can hardly hear the engine. Ironically this video itself is a bit difficult to hear - it's not loud enough!
I have a 97 Turbo R. It is fantastic and extremely overbuilt. For the ownership experience, it is all about having a good mechanic. But if you have a good mechanic, then buy a good one, take care of it, and you won’t regret it.
What do the insurance companies behave like when you ask them to quote collision and liability coverage for one of these cars? I live here in the midwest of the US and many insurance companies don't like luxury cars and quote some pretty high prices. Just curious what it's like in the UK.
In the UK cars like this are placed on Fully Comprehensive Agreed Valuation Classic Insurance Policies. They take into account it is highly unlikely to be an everyday car, and usually works out much cheaper than a modern car. To give you an idea, the insurance on this is roughly half what I was paying for a 12 year old Audi A6.
Hi guys! I would first say that there are many more Bentley Arnage in better shape. I had one Arnage T for over 6 years. It had been serviced at Bentley in Crewe to 100%. The car was beautiful with only 67'000 Km but after I had driven the first 100 miles, the engine melted completely leaving me with a car with exhaust pipes, gear box and the intake module including the turbos. After 9 months Bentley finally provided an engine. I had to pay the installation of the engine, which was a bit more expensive than the car itself. The car is just fantastic to own, to drive, to look at. But to use it as I did for every day is not really recommended as the car produces continuously an impressive number of technical problems. After 6 years and 134'000 Km it started to burn 3 liter water each 100 Km and I decided to sell it. But what memories I have with this car. Not impossible for me to think about to buy a new one...
Oops! A bit if a slip of the tongue at 11.44 mins? "The Arnage never fails to disappoint"! But apart from that, an excellent review of all the pros and cons of owning and maintaining such a beauty. Reminds me of a lady I once knew....
Great video. Just found your channel and there’s some great content so very surprised to see just 350 subs. (351 now) haha. What’s the story behind the channel. Are you a dealer or something? You’re clearly not new to all this.👍🏻
Thank you for the really kind comment and I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the video. The RUclips/talking to camera is very new to me but learning more with each video. I’ve been involved and loved classic cars pretty much all my life and just wanted to share my passion/ give some insight on cars that perhaps people previously didn’t know much about. Thank you for subscribing.
Just a suggestion, but I think you should try talking as if you’re talking to a couple of people rather than a corporate presentation to a room full of people. But I do love your enthusiasm for the car. 👌
Thank you, glad to hear you enjoyed it.
What are your biggest bills?
@@RootBeerGMT I spent over £30k getting the brakes, suspension, headlights, cruise control, aircon, steering rack, seat controls and stereo fixed on the Turbo R. Paint still needs doing and that is around £45k including all prep work. For the Azure I’ve spent around £4k getting the roof to work after 2 of the 8 tubes that fire the roof open exploded.
So basically I should look for one with dozens of mechanical issues, swap it to a GM smallblack or diesel. Got it.
Seems you have a hobby that costs !
Surely it would be cheaper to rent one each time you get an itch for that imperious drive ?
I was going to buy a Nissan Leaf but I will take your advice & buy a Twenty year old Bentley .. thank you .. 🥸🥸😎
How many Leaf batteries can you buy for the price of a Bentley engine?

I would just like to compliment you on the high standard of your English.
Yes indeed. As of now (AUG 2022), sadly, the Netherlands is a pretty awful country to live in, period. Where shall we start?
Why are that costs in the Netherlands so high as there
are many classics dealers as A.P. Brummen or gallery
Aaldering, and others, who sell plenty of old cars per year?
Why dont register the car in France or Luxembourg?
Insurance and road tax are cheap, the french dropped
long ago the luxury tax on cars.
I think you have summed up classic Rolls Royce and Bentley ownership perfectly. Happy motoring.
Six kids? Oh god Why?
I did a lot of research on this car and found it to be the best of Bentley' car ever made. I personally don't care about performance, size of engines like V8's and V12's and super charges but I do care about quality and luxury and this car has it. I would be happy with the 4.4 green label The dash is these are the best ever. This car is just gorgeous.
They certainly have character and charm like no other car.
Is it even better than the 2008 Brooklands and the 2009 Mulsanne? So far I was only fortunate enough to experience these two
Very wise Richard. The 4.4 is by far the best Arnage that Bentley produced. I speak from experience having owned both a 4.4 and a 6.75
I have always found it very interesting how the status of a particular engine overrides their practical reasoning that might make a better car.
@@richardautenzio8117 How ironic for I am currently considering (and researching) the beautiful Jaguar F-Type!

These were made good and painted, plus the front end (as this blunt front end around the light clusters is a stone chip magnet) - £1100
We also had the whole underside of the car rust-proofed with a Hot Fog treatment - £800
The worst fail we had were two rear shock absorber bushes which were a Bentley part.
Both Bentley and rolls are magnificent cars that Britain gave us. Sure the maintenance can be high but the overall build quality is definitely there.
There is nothing to compare to a Rolls Royce. It is in a league of one. @@frankfarago2825
I owned the 4.4 litre V8 Green Label version of this car about 20 years ago. It had suprisingly better MPG than the 6.75 litre and with the Cosworth Twin-turbos, very quick off the mark.
I'm considering a green label car. Do you recommend it?

They really do have an incredible presence. Must have been a great sight back in 2003 as it passed along Baker Street.

It was, a great British car in a great British City_ it was a very posh sight. In that congested traffic, it went slow. I paused and I looked and thought "wow". But only a handful could afford it then and still now.
That color combo is beautiful!
I think The Arnage looks better
Superb, the silence in that thing is amazing. 👍👍
What were the biggest bills?
@@RootBeerGMT Biggest single item was getting the wheel arches done. Rear ones needed completely replacing and the front ones needed patching up a fair bit. Then just a lot of things that all add up, like new tyres (~ £400 each), new condenser for the air con, replacement alarm module, etc etc. I'm happy to say since my last post I've spent a lot less on it, hopefully it will stay that way for a good while.
I have just found your channel and subscribe at once. Greetings from Canada, we have a few old Bentleys here!
Thank you! Great to hear that you have subscribed and I hope you enjoy the videos
I had 1999 4.4 L Green Label. Loved it. Never had an issue of any kind. I should have kept it!
Fantastic video! The sensations are well conveyed. Greetings from the country of a supercars (Italy)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video, cheers. 👍 Although, saying that it never fails to disappoint actually means that it always disappoints. 😂
Ahh I know 😂 a slip of the tongue unfortunately but I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
I have actually owned cars that really did live up to that sentence perfectly! 🤣

I sell cars for a living and this review is spot on
Thank you! Hope you enjoyed the video.
Cheers!
I love that car. Great video!
nice review ---- friend just bought one for a wedding car and chaffeur /// lets see etc ....
I’m going to have one of these 🇬🇧🇬🇧 why not. Subscribed 🇬🇧🇬🇧
i bet the local petrol station knows it well but i love that people take these cars on and rightly so ,so much englishness ....brilliant x
haha! They do know it very well. Hope you enjoyed the video.
Great ownership advice that in truth applies to all high end modern classics.
I was a Chauffeur and my last 4 years I drove Arnage 2 red label 1T once you learn to drive it you can push them along they are fun 😊
Sadly the potential for sub 10mpg ruled it out for me so I bought a Jaguar XJ instead,
Jaguar XJ is a great alternative. I will be featuring a project XJ regularly on the channel very soon
I have an XJ 12 (Double Six to be precise) and fuel consumption is not much better than with the Bentley.
@@markusberzborn6346 I have the 2.7 diesel (heresy I know) X358, returns average of 34mpg with 40 plus on a run.
Love the channel another cool review
Thank you! Great to hear that you are enjoying the videos
Thank you for watching and great to hear from a fellow Arnage owner.
Excellent commentary. What gorgeous automobile. Great to see you appreciate all the quality, details and performance! Fun and luxury!
Great videos. I’m new to laning. I’m from Derbyshire myself. So going to try and find some of the lanes you have driven.
Good review and advice.
Glad you enjoyed it
'never fails to disappoint'?
Forgive my pedantry: 'never fails to surprise/please' or 'never disappoints.' Easily done when you're concentrating on something else. Great video.
A slip of the tongue unfortunately. Great to hear you enjoyed the video.
Did you shoot this around Moulton/Newmarket?
Better to pay one for cash. Because a paid off car is the cheapest car to own.
Love these. This is a stunner
thanks man, an essential video for exactly what i want to do, Bentleys are superb vehicles and i WILL have one
What a stunning piece of engineering and styling. Perfection.
Thank you for watching.
What a GREAT channel I’ve just found it and love it.
Thank you
What boggles me is how the head gasket and camshaft issues could even be a thing.
@@jjefferyworboys8138 it wasn't really 'solved' when another manufacturer's engine is swapped in and then swapped back, into the same body.
one word: emissions.
No expert. But if you turbo and up the power over even the old turbo r then you can run into issues such as gasket failure that you never had when the engine was much less stressed
@Nichen Fauster English. 😊
Great video. I really enjoyed listening to you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video mate!
You’ve got my motor running again…
This almost retired UPS DRIVER, might make the leap! 👍

Lucky lad ✊
I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video :). If our paths cross at any point, we will have to arrange to go for a spin in the Bentley.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Many thanks for watching.
20+ years on…still majestic.
Thank you, I still love it.
Great video - love the car!
Excellent review, many thanks.
I like the way you think 😅 A used higher end car that’s older is better than a newer econobox 😊
Absolutely!
Very well done video, mate.
Its a no brainer The Arnage all day long !, You buy a car to put a smile in your face ,
give me a real car like the Arnage or another Classic /Marquee compared to the drab & souless new stuff they do today, Great Video !
I was sold; right upto the time that you said "it never fails to disappoint"
Great to hear you enjoyed the video. There will be more updates on the Bentley in the New Year.
I’ve owned a RR Silver shadow mark 1 brought in 1989 then a RR Silver spirit didn’t really have any major problems.
Great video. Great advice 👍🏼
Loving your Bentley reviews. Great effort and production. Do you think you can get a Mulsanne to review.? Do you like them? D
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the Shadow 2, that’s a car I’ve always wanted to own.
The problem with luxury cars is that their parts, whilst unique to each model, are typically made out of exactly the same metal, rubber or plastic as any other car so for example any equivalent suspension component won't really last any longer in a Bentley than in a Passat.
Great stuff ! Thank you
Great video of a great car - but you mention it you can hardly hear the engine. Ironically this video itself is a bit difficult to hear - it's not loud enough!
Thank you! Plenty more videos on the way :)
A fantastic honest report 100 % full marks
Thank you
Sounds as though you were very unlucky with all the engine problems you experienced.
Hello, I have a 2004 Bentley Arnage T. I need an engine. Do you have a used engine with little mileage, or do you recommend installing the engine?
