Correction: The Godox ML60 (daylight only) does not have App control, just remote control. The Godox ML60bi does have app control. Sorry for the confusion.
Also, I was informed by Nanlite that the 60 ii does NOT have green and magenta shift control. I confused it with their 300w mkii lights that were released at the same time.
Sorry once again, apparently I need to review my notes better in the future!

However after fully deleting (rather than updating) the app and re-installing fresh, followed by bluetooth resetting and re-adding each fixture all seems to be working great and much more stable than previously. It’s really cool to see the pros and cons of each and to see how close they can get to making a good light and still mess up the design by some stupid choice in the prototyping process. Great comparison and a nice reminder of why I love the Godox ML60. One of the biggest benefits for me is that the ML60 is almost the exact same size at the AD300 flash. Both have the small, proprietary Godox mount which allows them to the share the same HIGHLY portable softboxes. I now bring both the ML60s and the AD300 flashes to shoots since they have different strengths. Hello again Fellow Filmmaker! Need an instant advice when I try to decide if 60W is enough or if I need 100W. Besides doing indoor interviews I also need my light for product videography. I do want a quite large octagonal or parabolic softbox, preferably 85-90 cm. Will the 60W do good for a softbox that large? In short - should I consider a 100W instead of the 60W to match an large softbox and in general be more versatile and "future proof" so to say?

    • @FellowFilmmaker

The case really is the worst thing about the Amaran, can't believe they designed it so poorly, but thankfully it's so small that I have no issues tossing it into my camera bag. I also ended up just getting another reflector for mine since the included one is terrible, but considering the prices I have no complaints. I'll probably end up picking up a second one for that reason alone.

Small tip, I taped a Switchbot Bot to my ML60 so now I can turn it on using the Switchbot app, without having to manually press the toggle switch. As far as I can tell there is no bluetooth or app at all (this is only the bi version I believe?) - and even the optional remote you can purchase cannot turn the light on frustratingly, you have to physically climb behind the soft box to press the toggle button.

@@FellowFilmmaker I'm taking this opportunity to ask you a question as well. First of all, thank you for sharing; I recently discovered your channel while looking for equipment. To enhance a portrait in a situation with low lighting in a relatively large office, I'm seeking a versatile solution for the main key light. I already have a Godox VL150, but thanks in part to your channel, I've come across the Aputure Amaran series, especially the Amaran 200x S bi-color (unlike my Godox). Would you say this would be a good starting solution, especially in this particular shooting context? Ideally, I was initially looking for a 300W bi-color option from Amaran, but I couldn't find one, and the Aputure 300d mkII (as well as the Nanlite 300B II) is beyond my budget.
Thank you, in any case, for your channel; I'm subscribing !👍

One thing about the amaran I haven't noticed until a year after owning it is the diffuser which is included for the reflector. I know it gets light everywhere again but the Hotspot is gone and makes it usable somehow... and takes away a lot of light... But usable.

So far, for narrative film, it's never been a problem for me. Sometimes I can hear it when I'm right next to it, but it doesn't seem to have any ability to carry any distance. Wow not having a rocker switch and instead just a one-dimensional toggle (I'm not really sure what the correct button terminology would be there lol) is so baffling to me because... the way they implemented it would require way more complicated electronics ???
I guess maybe the rocker switches are kinda expensive and a bunch of electronic components are usually not?
If you wanted to turn it into a rocker switch you'd probably have to attach some bodge wires that skips part of the "sensing" circuit which determines whether the button press should turn on the power delivery or turn it off (some kind of latching mechanism?)
Would be very very interested to see a teardown of it :D If it wasn't so much I'd buy one and tear it down myself because I love hacking on electronics and I am very curious but also eeeeeeeh a bit too much to justify lol :D

Thanks for this great comparison of these three lights. I think you are right-the Goddox is the best. I myself have no Goddox, i know the Amaran and the Nanlite. In my opinion the amaran is out because it is to loud for interview situations. I like the nanlite very much, but you are right, the adapter is fiddly. The knobs fall loose easily. I've already lost one. When you push the knob for the effects, it often accidentally activats an effect. This happens to me regularly and is quite annoying.
