One of the best movies from Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, Tony Scott, Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, as in it’s a Top 10 great for every person listed.
This was a great Movie. I regard Gene Hackman as one of the best actors in the world. More so than De Niro even. Hackman plays the part well where he is basically a good guy but does some questionable things. Nevertheless he is still likeable.
i am a big fan, he is great, i wish he was still acting, bummer he is retired, but his films will live on, would love to see footage from the french connection, id say its rare, but i keep looking. thanks for watching !
It's really a shame Captain Ramsay was turned into a villain by some of his actions (being unnecessarily unreasonable, putting a gun to the head of other officers and soldiers, etc). I would have rather seen him as a more ambiguous character.
Tony Scott, may you rest in peace. Thank you for bringing us this great war thriller. Also the movie is loosely based on two incidents involving Russians who refused to use nuclear weapons when either their subordinates were encouraging them to or a computer early detection program recommended it. These are two men that everyone owes their lives to. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Arkhipov en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov
I never tire of watching this movie both for it's realism and stark message it portrayed. In the nuclear age such events could play out. I can see how this got the US navy spooked and took measures to make sure no one person had overriding control over the launch of nuclear weapons hence the introduction of the football controlled by a sitting president. Given the very real threat today regarding the Ukraine conflict i can imagine there are a few fingers hovering over these weapons most notably Putin. Let's hope sanity prevails and threats subside. A mistake now would indeed see not only a 3rd world war but a holocaust at unimaginable levels not seen in history.
many of the military movie stuff i have done, makes you realize that we have gone back, not forward, and its troublesome to see the same kind of behavior out of Russia, just like when they had the iron curtain, they want that again. These cold war ;movies are interesting , but also a warning in my mind. like whenever i watch one, i get the feeling i had when i served in the military during the cold war. This is very real, and your right, it could possibly get uglier. never thought i would see this day again, but anyways, glad you are watching !! thanks.
I served on a Surface Ship in a Combat Zone under a Captain not unlike the Man portrayed in this film. Tough, Old School, No nonsense. Reflecting back in time, there’s no way I would have backed the Junior Lt. Commander XO over the Orders of an experienced Full Bird Captain. I was a Gunner-mate and would have shot the XO upon orders to do so. In this situation it would have been best that I was the one shot. 2 tours to Vietnam on an Ammo ship and we carried Nukes. They were safer than the cigarette lighters we carried. Vietnam Vet USN
Even though the Navy didn't like how the producers portrayed them, 'in my humble opinion', I think that this film still blows Hunter Killer, and sinks that feature even further than 20,000 leagues under the sea, yet both films had built pretty accurate sets, and both films mention the USS Baton Rouge SSN-689, twice. I do own the extended version, and the more humorous making of, hosted by, George Dzundza, who also had been in the series, Law & Order. Take care, and all the best.
This is a decent movie and occasionally strange things happen even on US nuclear submarines..but all things considered..Mutiny,insubordination and a breakdown in the military chain of command would be extremely unlikely in our navy..That’s why even in a weapons drill the COB and the OOD are armed..You would be shot by them for Dereliction of Duty..At the very least, the boat would be meant at the nearest military port and your Naval superiors would relieve you of your command immediately!.

I totally agree. De Niro is very good too as well as Al Pacino. My prefer Hackman. I guess at the end of the day it is all preference.

Hackman is a real badass commander
This is a very great film I will never get tired of
Great movie
Always wanted to see that reporter that interviews Radchenko closer like in that scene

He sounds like Putin! Art imitating life LOL
But Putin isn't insane ....
Chief of boat needs to loose a few pounds
They were right to delete this scene. Not needed at all.
