- This was a fun QSO! I definitely made mistakes, and I missed copy along the way, but still think I did pretty well for my first time.
Thanks to Ed, N9EP, for his awesome guidance and help as the instructor of my CW Academy course. I totally recommend this course for anyone interested in learning CW. It's totally free! Check it out: www.cwops.org/cwacademy.html

Congratulation, Tony! Thank you for sharing. I started learning Morse code when I was a child and lived in Kazakhstan, in the 70s; my neighbor and I connected our houses with 3 wires and used toy equipment to practice. A little later I made a 1-transistor CW transmitter, went on top of a small hill by the house, and my friend was listening on his radio. I transmitted "If you hear me, come out!"... He RAN out of the house, and we both started jumping and screaming :)) I made many CW DX contacts since then, but to this day that one remains the most memorable and satisfying. Some people don't understand this hobby, Morse code,... To them it's rubbish. To us, ham-radio guys, it's science, friendship, sport, excitement, goals, learning new things,... something that helps us be happy. Good luck to you, my friend!
i realize it's pretty randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Finnegan Edwin i watch on FlixZone. You can find it on google :)
Very cool! I made my first CW mode QSO this month, a guy in a FB group convinced me to get on the air, we used FB messenger to coordinate and made it happen. I signed up for the CW Academy last April and the next opening was Jan-2018..I'll be practicing between now and then!
Very good Tony. In the beginning it is so. You are now on our team. Congratulations!
Good luck on your speed in CW and thanks for sharing the video with us all. 73 Dennis.
Congratulations Tony! Great job... now you have your first one under your belt. Welcome to CW! I'll be looking forward to have a QSO with you some day. 73, KK0I
Everytime you learn a new language you multiply by a factor of two all your knowledges. Congratulations for your effort.
By the way, Tony, for a beginner, your fist is excellent! You have a great future in CW! Keep on Trucking, old son!
Congratulations and great job! Very encouraging video to folks learning CW!
Your first CW qso went a lot better than mine. I didn't copy much other than the other hams call sign. But, it got me going and now I've had thousands of CW contacts. Still working on my code to try to get my sending error free at speed with a paddle. Congrats on your accomplishment!
Way to go I'm right behind on this. I hope to start making my first contacts soon. I finished the CW Ops level 1 class in May. Still practicing and working on copying ...
Great job on learning CW!
Wish I could give this 1,000 thumbs up! Good job. I'm starting CW Academy soon.
Congrats man! I'm studying CW on my own for now in and out... My first key is in the mail so I reckon I'll be irking to get on the air as soon as it arrives :D
That was great! I'm currently in the CW Academy beginners class and I haven't made that "first" QSO yet. I'm coming along with sending but still having trouble copying . Thanks for taking the time to post your QSO, its encouraging and makes me really want to get on the air! Hope to contact you sometime in the future. 73
Nice little rig, isn't it ! I love mine. Glad to see you are using CW.
Barry, KU3X
Congratulations... I'm David XE2AD (ex XE1REW) and, after 13 years since I got my first ham radio license and studied to pass the CW exam in those days, I returned to CW now, it was hard for me to start again but this last weekend I started to transmit in CW and I had so much fun !!!!!! Glad I decided to get CW again and regret I didn't do it before. Hpe cu in any freq. very soon. 73 de XE2AD.
Quite an accomplishment Tony. Keep up the good work! (Especially on QRP!) If you tune into the cw portion of the band (80, 40, 30, 20, whatever) and just listen to QSOs while you work on your bench, you will find the faster code begins to make more sense. It's how I went from 13 WPM to 20 WPM to get my extra in '95. Retired now and meaning to work more CW so maybe we can chat.

Congrats ! I’m leaning toward the CW Academy for the same reason. If I don’t have a structured process, I’ll have 18 reasons to skip this and that and put off one of the steps. This is a language. And I am determined to become fluent. 73 and cu on the HF bands - W3GX
Congratulations, I am just starting out on morse as well. Well done
That's great! I just signed up for the class. I have wanted to learn CW for a while now. I just ordered a KX2 thinking that I was going to be able to use it for CW QRP. I have been studying but loose motivation when I don't see a lot of progress. Hopefully the structured format of a class will keep me going! Have you tried using the keyer for digi modes on the KX2?
Big CONTRATS!!!!!! I am jealous now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job!
KD8RTT, I feel very happy for you! --Bruce, KN4NNT
Congratulations Tony! Your life will never be the same. You will find you look at trees thinking about what type of antenna you can string up.... the checkout beeps at the grocery store are sending messages to you! You can now program morse code ringtones on your phone.... 73 Len
good work! I've been meaning to get there, but maybe i'll try something a little more structured like cw academy.
I'm still waiting for more CW QSO's
Congratulations Tony is doing great at Cw, it's always good to have more friends to talk to. hug from py1lhl Leo
Not too far from me! I'm in Mason County WV. I got to Athens all the time. I'm getting my ham license here soon!
Congrats to your Tony. I start CW Academy here in September and looking forward to it. Maybe you could do another video that is more in depth on your experience with the class. I decided I needed to sign up for the course (self motivate by pressure) in hope to finally learn it. Good job and good video. Hope to make a contact with you on the air.
Chris W5SLU me too staring in September
M0NPT I just received my email starting 04SEPT17. Maybe we will be in same class. But maybe they group classes via time zones

Congtats on yr first on air cw contact. One comment, you mention that this is at 12 wpm. I think I disagree, 12 wpm is abt my max speed and this seemed a lot slower. I would guess this is abt 8 wpm or so. Either way, keep it up. Good job.
I'm still learning, so forgive me for asking - is it normal to send/copy at one speed, but have extra long spaces in between characters? The training apps I've been using keep the speed consistent, and this was WAY easier to copy for me simply because of longer spaces between characters.
Hey Dovid, I'm a cw learner, and yes characters at faster speed with more spacing between is called "Farnsworth" method. Many apps and software allow for this.
Excellent job at the first gw2 so you have a very promising career an amateur radio congratulations welcome to the ranks ocw very f i St
How much have you been doing CW since this video was made?
Great Job Tony. nice fist for a beginner, your timing and spacing are gud. you should gain speed and perfection readily. Gud luck and keep on poundin Brass! OM! de Ellis WA1RKS
Always fun to make the first CW contact.... you did fine! How is it going now? Did you get into the Level 2 class? I Did Level 1. I tried to learn Code for 12 years on and off and never got it... 8 weeks in CW academy and I was on the air! It really is a fantastic class! 73 -
Thanks for watching Tom! I did not end up taking level 2 yet... I think they were too booked up and bumped me, but I’m still planning on doing it. I agree though, it is such a good way to learn. My brother actually just finished level 1 tonight, so I’m planning to work him soon!
Congratulations! I can remember my first contact years ago. Why was your contact using question marks instead of periods on the first go around?
Gary Krause thank you! In the CW Academy, we didn't learn periods, instead just using . The question marks were usually sent when I made a mistake and I think Ed did a few times to separate repeated model numbers.
Well congratulations again! CW is my favorite mode and especially QRP. It looks like you'll have a lot of fun with the KX2 and thanks for the review that you did on it. It was very informative! Gary, N7HTS
Dear Tony, Many congratulations, your sending is very easy to read. Vy 73, Graham de G4VUX
