  • Because I live life without the use of a wheelchair I often get asked how I handle certain everyday situations without people doing things for me.
    Other amputees often ask so they can try things themselves so I thought I'd start videoing the answers to some of your questions starting with
    "How do you get onto high surfaces without a wheelchair/stool etc..."
    Hope this answers your question.

    But whats wrong with having a wheelchair around so you can get to things in the kitchen when you don't have your legs on? Wheelchairs are a tool, they aren't something to absolutely refuse just to say you don't ever use one.

    • @MarkOrmrod
      @MarkOrmrod  7 лет назад +10

      There's absolutely nothing wrong with using a wheelchair if that's what you choose to do. I'm not disrespecting anyone who uses one but I developed my rehab to make me as independent as possible so that one day if for example you don't have a wheelchair or it breaks then I can still be 100% independent without it. I was always told when I was going through rehab that the world will never adapt to you, you have to adapt to the world so by training myself this way it vastly reduces the chances of me ever having to rely on anyone or anything to live independently.

      Sure I get that, the world will never adapt to you. You need to be ready to do what you need to, but having a wheelchair at home isn't that crazy or unusual. Wheelchairs also don't just break so that's not something you need to really worry about especially if you have the skills and physical ability to do without. I worry about your shoulder with that getting on/off the counter move. If you do that for 30 years its going to cause a lot of wear and tear. Why not get a wheelchair to help with it and if the chair breaks you can do your floor to counter move. I'm not telling you what to do. I respect that everyone has their own way to manage and figure things out when it comes to disability. I guess I'm just concerned for the long term and want the best for you as well as any others who watch your video and decide to do what you do.
