The main building - almost anytime you see lots of extras - that this was filmed in is the Dallas Market Center in Dallas, Texas, which is kind of a "mall" but for wholesale companies - it's not open to the general public, you have to be a business. It had just been built and had unique architecture at the time, and made a good backdrop that didn't need a lot of expensive set-building to look interesting - just some decorations. Many locations around Fort Worth and Dallas were used - the Fort Worth Water Gardens being the most iconic. The "Love Shop" scenes were filmed in a night club in Dallas (long defunct), and a few scenes were filmed at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston. Only a few actual studio sets needed to be built for the movie as a result. This is a great example of what a reasonably big-budget Sci-Fi movie looked like in 1976 - just a year before Star Wars massively raised the bar. But it mostly still holds up and is a favorite of mine, flaws and all. It's very much a "time capsule" of the mid '70s.
@@BigTroyT the scenes I was in, were filmed at OZ. A nightclub on 635 LBJ, in What was then North Dallas. It was very futuristic looking. Later it became Betty Crocker's tree house restaurant.
The few reactors I’ve seen react to this movie always seem confused by Box and his purpose. Before they reached him they hinted that they used to breed fish and animals, probably for food for a much larger population. Over time the computer system kept the population in check so the excess food wasn’t needed and people stopped maintaining that part of the city. Box was built to process the fish and plankton from the sea. He even said that one day the fish stopped coming (infer that they stopped breeding the fish from the lower levels). As the runners made their way up to the surface they all encountered Box and were all frozen by him. He was just following his programming to freeze organic material from the lower levels. So it’s implied that no runners ever made it as far as Logan and Jessica because they were all frozen (plus they didn’t have weapons or anything to resist Box’s freeze Ray or whatever his gun did. ) I think the writers were hinting that Sanctuary was just as mythical as renewal and that everyone who had tried to reach it died too. I’m pretty sure this deviated from the source material as I believe there were multiple cities and such.
An interesting discussion I ran across was the theory that Sanctuary was actually a hidden protocol programmed into the central computer. Once every 100 years or so it sent someone seeking Sanctuary on the thought that one day, when humanity and the outside world were ready, someone would break through, as Logan did, and release people from the confines of the city. There's no basis for this in the movie or in the book but it makes for an interesting discussion.
I get the impression the AI which runs the city phased out older people not only as a form of population control, but also the simplify the healthcare system. Delete older people before they require additional healthcare services which the system cannot sustain.
I've had this same observation about younger folks reacting to Box. There's been some sort of change since the movie came out. Seeing this as a teen, it seemed obvious what was happening.
I always thought that they meant that all the fish in the ocean died!!! But what you said makes SO much more sense!!! WOW, it is weird when you just realize that you have been misinterpreting something for the last 48 YEARS!!!
This was so revolutionary back in the seventies. Back then the going wisdom by the younger generation was you trust no one over thirty. So this flew right in the face of that as the older person they found actually gave them hope that you could actually live. A truth that came to Logan, quite by accident through the systems need to eliminate the whole "sanctuary" myth. It offered a more balanced value to all of humanity and not just the beauty of youth, that there was far more joy than the passions of that society. If you think about the challenges of American society back when this was made, it was revolutionary to the whole of society.
This movie came out in 1976, before Star Wars. It was a huge megamovie for it's day. MGM put a lot of money into it. The soundtrack (by Jerry Goldsmith), is utterly fantastic. The special effects are dated, but it was highly imaginative. Logan goes through a great transformation, at first.... faking it as a runner... but gradually changing and growing with Jessica. He is fully transformed by the time he finally confronts his old best friend Francis, who can't accept change. Thanks for reviewing this.
Well, I'd take the "dated" effects in THIS movie over those stupid computer simulations in those more current movies of yours. And 2001a Space Odyssey came almost an entire decade before Star Wars (people tend to forget THAT's the movie that TRULY pioneered and revolutionized visual effects of THOSE kind).
the effects cannot help but seem dated - Star Wars the next year was a breakthrough in special effects - but the thing these films had was great writing - great casting - and acting talent that mostly puts today's actors to shame - now the effects are the stars of the show. I do give the UK credit for trying to keep real acting alive as a true craft - but American actors need to do much better - the greats like Nicholson - De Niro - Pacino - Hackman - Hoffman etc. are almost all gone now - and we really don't have any worthy replacements ..
@@billyz5088 Like McVicar (the commenter just above you there^) has already stated here, 2001ASO predated frigging SW. Besides, I find that SOME of the $h!t in THIS flick looks as good as anything in SW - like particularly the robot (at 30:08 in this video), the "clean-up" scene (at 6:26), and the "Carousel" scenes (3:24 and 45:54) are all very visually striking moments which I think hold their own to high and mighty SW. Also, SW and THIS flick aren't exactly the SAME KIND of thing. THIS flick is a FUTURISTIC story where's SW is a SPACE ADVENTURE, so not THAT similar really.
@@IanFindly-iv1nl ~~ yes SW is a different thing and I also like LR better - in the 60's Kubrick was the only one who made space travel look real - Star Trek was running but they didn't have the budget Kubrick had - but while SW made some advances in '77 - it was basically a space fantasy for kids - Disney in space - Sir Alec Guinness ( the original Obi-wan ) - called it .. "fairy-tale rubbish" ..
Poor Micheal York. Used to be a well know actor back in the day. Now he’s just know as, “that guy from Austin Powers” or at best, “Basil from Austin Powers”. 😂
Michael York was Tybalt ("the prince of cats") in Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet in 1968. That was where I first encountered him, and that is how I remember him.
I went to see Rollerball. It was a double feature along with Logan's Run. I was 16 and was rejected at the box office because Logan's Run was rated R. Went back the net day and got in. Jenny Agutter was also the first nude woman I've seen in a movie.
I saw this as a little kid (bad parenting) and it scared the crud out of me. I was convinced that people kicked off at 30. Now, as a 54-year-old kid, I can appreciate it much more. Despite the '70s fashion and special effects it holds up really well but I think that has more to do with Nolan and Johnson's source material. I'm actually surprised there hasn't been a remake with Hollywood's love of rehashing old projects to make a buck. Fun reaction and thanks for picking an underappreciated classic.
they probably dont even know about it in 'hollywood', because this movie wasnt very well known to people beyond babyboomers.. when i brought it up to classmates, barely any of my generation knew about it, and that was in the 80s
Powerful futuristic, dystopian movie, but with a happy ending. Great cast including Peter Ustinov, Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Farrah Fawcett. Excellent selection for a movie to react to. Loving the channel. Look forward to future movies and TV shows.
There was also a Logan's Run TV series that ran from 1977-78 & had 14 Episodes. It stars Gregory Harrison, Heather Menzies & Donald Moffat who plays Rem who is an android.
The actor who plays the old man is named Peter Ustinov. Another great movie of Peter's is "Topkapi." The movie was so good that TV producers took elements from it and made the Mission Impossible franchise.
2:00 Mark! Greetings, Miranda! This is my favorite fictional city dedign! It was reused as the capital city of Planet Ork in "Mork & Mindy" and the sky was shades of red including pink. The color change hid the walls of the domes. 😊
Great reaction. Really perceptive. I would only add three little points: The story is based on Plato’s “allegory of the cave”, which is the basis of many films and when you know it you will recognise it. Other films based on it range from The Matrix and Dark City to Barbie and even Sausage Party. Essentially it is about the obligation of a person who discovers the true nature of reality to pass on that knowledge to others even at the risk of not being believed. The second point is just about the robot, Box. The only purpose of that scene is to explain why all of the runners who came before never made it to sanctuary. Logan only makes it because as the first Sandman to run, he is the first runner to be armed. Lastly, RIP Richard Jordan - a wonderful actor who was taken far too young.
I saw Logan's Run in the theater when it came out. The interrogation at the end was using holograms which were a big deal state-of-the-art back then. This movie got the Oscar in 1977 for best visual effects. The following year the award went to Star Wars. That will tell you how much a leap Star Wars made.
When Francis and Logan were hunting that runner in the beginning of the movie, they were missing on purpose. They were toying with their prey, like a cat does with a mouse.
Bleak, dystopic, hopelessness was the core of all entertainment in the late '60s and throughout the '70s. This is why people couldn't get enough of Star Wars. Entertainment that doesn't make the audience depressed? How shocking!
The reason we couldn't get enough of Star Wars was because no one had seen or heard anything like that before. Plus it was the introduction of the greatest movie hero of all time Harrison Ford.
@@reesebn38 2001 a Space Odyssey came almost an entire decade before Star Wars (people tend to forget THAT's the movie that TRULY pioneered and revolutionized visual effects of THOSE kind).
For Sci Fi, I recommend "The Day the Earth Stood Still" 1951, "The War of the Worlds" 1953, "Forbidden Planet" 1956, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" 1956, "The Time Machine" 1960, "Silent Running" 1972, "Soylent Green" 1973, "Blade Runner" 1982, "Galaxy Quest" 1999.
I forgot about that one. James Arness first starring role. It wasn't even close to the book. Of course, they didn't have the tech to be able to do it back then.
Love this film, first saw it first in 76 at 13. A bit away from 30. The book Logan's Run is first of a trilogy, Logan's World and Logan's Search are the other two. In the books 'Sancuary' actually exists. This was the first film that had a true hologram, during the interrogation sequence. I would enjoy seeing your reactions to some other 70's sci-fi. I have a list, but two of my favorites are 'Silent Running' and 'Soylent Green'.
Add to your list, "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970), an obvious inspiration for Skynet in the Terminator series. Also the distinctly weird, "Phase IV" (1974), and of course, "Westworld" (1973).
Glad to see this one. Some movies that are missed by most: Colossus The Forbin Project (First AI taking over thew world plot !). Fahrenheit 451, 1966 Ver. The Day The Earth Stood Still, 1950 Ver
They live inside a dome with finite space and finite resources. The AI probably figured out hundreds of years ago that if the population wasn't controlled, it would quickly grow beyond what would survive, so it enacted the 30 year limit and controlled birth to keep the population stable.
9:42 Mark! Early on in his time as an IT employee for "JCPenney" my younger brother attended classes, courses, lectures or whatever they were called, in places in Dallas, and the host would say that if you recognized the place without having been there before, it was probably because you saw the location used in "Logan's Run"! I think someone was a fan of the movie and planned their conferences or whatever to be at the movie locations! 😊
Enjoyed watching this with you. I'm really going to date myself but I remember when this was in production. The waterfall area where they go back into the city was filmed at the Water Gardens in my home town if Ft Worth TX. We talked my best friend's mom into driving us downtown to get a look but it was all blocked off. So we went up to the fifth floor of a parking garage and able to watch some of the action. The outfits definitely caught my eye😏 Later when the film came out, my grandmother took me to see it at the theater for my 12th birthday. I'm sure you can understand because of some of the scenes/themes I was mortified to be watching with my grandma. After the film I kind of apologized but she just laughed it off and said that there wasn't anything so bad, and she really enjoyed the movie. The year previous she had taken me to see Young Frankenstein and really enjoyed that too. Great memories with her❤
The interiors were shot at The Dallas Market Hall. Various other locations in the DFW metro were also used. The Stairs for the Sandman Center exterior was I think Somewhere over on Stemmons Freeway. Its wonderful to know it was filmed here.
Box was a part of the city's food supply system. The lower levels of the city grew fish and sea life which then reached Box's cave, where he froze the food for use later. Apparently the fish farms fell into disrepair and the people responsible for it could not restore the food supply. The darker implication was that the people Bix froze became the new food supply. Which you talked about as I was typing this comment.
I was born a few months before this movie came out, so people kept asking my mom is she named me after it! She did not, but it is one of my favourite movies. So neat to watch you seeing it for the first time.
I love the whole retro/futuristic vibe in this film, from the costumes to the architecture! Great reaction! Those shots of D.C. are spectacular as well. As someone who loves history, and has a degree in it, seeing this as a teenager: the dilapidated Senate chamber, and all of D.C. in ruins, made me think about our future in the context of Rome, Greece and all the other fallen empires of world history.
In the book the computer was getting really old and was on the brink of a total breakdown due to no one being able to have the knowledge to fix it. The dome city was only set up to sit out the fallout and radiation from the war and only served a purpose to keep the human race alive by having a Roman paradise of living life to the fullest until 30. BTW in the book it was 21 and not 30 but the movie changed it so more actors could be used in the film.
Thanks for doing this sadly underappreciated movie. 1. In the book the death clock goes at 21, but they couldn't find enough actors. 2. GOOF: No way would Logan close that hatch with that much water going through it. 3. Peter Ustinov improvised much of his dialogue. 4. Jenny Agutter played Alex in "American Werewolf in London." 5. The last woman touching the old man's face. 😍😋😈 6. "Genesis II" has awesome miniature effects.
Yup. It had to do with the youth movement that was happening, with young people wanting control of things from the old guard. And also overpopulation too.
Luv that you started your movie reactions with Logan's Run! Classic sci-fi movie! I Luv this movie! It's so nostalgic! May I recommend you watch another classic sci-fi movie like "The Time Machine". Good Luck with your channel! I have joined because I like watching movies and people's reactions! Thanks for sharing Miranda ❤️💛🍿
a little trivia. in the novel renewal was at 21. but the movie producers couldn't find enough notable actors who could pass for 21ish so they changed the age to 30, even though Michael York was in his mid 30s in real life. this was the first movie to use holograms. (during Logan's final interrogation). also the actor who played the Doc was Michael Anderson Jr, the son of the director and had starred with John Wayne in The Sons of Katie Elder 11 years earlier. and you'll notice that the color of the clothes they wore corresponded with the color of their lifeclocks. great movie. thanks for reviewing it.
The reason for the domes city is obviously because some catastrophe happened. Since the domes are a set size, people can't be allowed to over populate. And rather than restricting procreation, they restrict how old someone gets. Fast forward to meeting Box, the robot. It's not that they are feeding humans to humans, there obviously wouldn't be enough. It's that Box's original job was to collect and story fish and plankton. And that's what those tanks they discovered were for. It was obviously abandoned. So, when people started coming through, seeking sanctuary, Box collected them as well. But they were just frozen, and that's it.
2:00 Mark! Oh by the way! "CBS" had both a live-action series version of "Planet of the Apes" that was a part of the series of movies, as well as an animated Saturday Morning cartoon version, that was more like the novel, minus the naked people! (They weren't "nude" because they had no choice!) "CBS" on Saturday Morning had the live-action "Ark II" set in a dystopian world along with "Space Academy" that gave us a promising future! But there was also their live-action series version of "Logan's Run"! Their series adaptation of the movie "MASH" was more supported despite the lack of a nude Sally Kellerman! However, for the series "Logan's Run" the women's clothes were more modest in comparison, and were only as sexy as girl's tennis or cheerleader uniforms of the time. 🤔 The costumes for males weren't changed in any of the adaptations!
This has always been one of my favorites and I think it's very underrated. At the risk of saying something I might regret, this would be a great movie to reboot, IF they could do it right. I mean it worked for Westworld, which was also from the early 70s. Ideally with Logan, maybe they could follow closer to the book. And I agree the dialogue does seem a bit stilted but it's also a very uneducated childlike society. Then we meet the old man, who is most likely a bit insane after living alone for so many years. But the important thing to remember, he was surviving on his own, so I'm sure he can teach them a lot about how to survive. I also think they could read so maybe they could find books to learn how to grow over time. There is also a TV series, which I think has a better version of Jessica. But the series has a lot of writers from Star Trek as well. The biggest difference is, they go through the world looking for Sanctuary, with Francis chasing them. They find many unique places and people on the way. Some a bit cheesy but some fairly interesting. And one last thought, I've been wanting to do a Logan cosplay for a while now! For future reaction videos, I love some classic sci-fi, so I'd recommend: The Time Machine (1960) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Planet of the Apes (1968) Battlestar Galactica (1978) - the series is also a mixed bag of awesome and eye-rolling. I'd say out of 23(?) episodes, 8 of them are phenomenal. Okay that's enough for now lol
3:05 Mark! By the way! Except for work uniforms, the colors of the civilian clothing matches the palm crystals and they indicate age range! No need to see the left palm when the clothes inform you! Makes it easier for the Sandmen! 😮
I’m glad to see this flick getting the love. There was some great ideas making it film in this timeframe. At some point, the studios are going to have to return to lower budget filmmaking with new ideas.
12:13 Mark! "As an adult"? Hehe! In the novels, the Computer tested people for their aptitude to determine their careers! That included being parents! You had to pass muster to be allowed to breed and raise a family! 😮 There were still such concepts as "outlaw biker gangs" but instead of wheeled motorcycles, they rode on hovering or levitating machines such as those in "The Island"! Or more recently, like the "robocop" in the 2009 "Star Trek" movie. They didn't resemble the "Star Wars Speeder Bike" which to me look like fancy modified flying vaccum cleaners or witch brooms! 😮 (See "Sabrina the Teenage Witch"!) In the novels the giant "Crazy Horse Memorial Statue" is a completed art project. Logan an Jessica encounter some rogues there. 😮 Reading about them reminded me of the movie "The Warriors"! 😊
If you watch the unedited version note the extra in the ending scene flashing the Vulcan salute. It’s quite obvious but apparently it slipped by the film editors and made it into the Final Cut. Back in the day, movies used to stay in the theaters for months at a time. I must have watched this a dozen times before it left the theaters.
I clicked on this video because I thought "she reminds me of someone but I'm not sure who". I stayed for the great reaction to this classic movie, and realised you remind me of the lovely Anna Torv from the rather excellent sci-fi show Fringe. Have a sub!
IMO, this has the greatest computer voice in cinema history. (HAL) being a very close second) If I’m correct, it was voiced by the woman that Logan lets go in the Cathedral scene.
You picked up a great time to watch this, I was alerted to a remake coming out soon! I think they are supposed to start filming this year. Updated Hollywood budget. I grew up on this movie, was a great add to the sci-fi genre at the time, very much a slow burn. It came out in an era of slow burn suspense, like Planet of the Apes, The Time Machine, and The Black Hole. Hard to live up to today's standard of ADHD entertainment. Before I forget, there's a great book series I read a long time ago that was made into a TV series called "SIlo" it streamed on Apple TV+ if you have access to it. The book series was great, I hope they get to finish the TV series! It has a very divergent plot from Logan's Run, so will feel fresh.
A Logan's Run remake has been in development hell for decades. Sadly it's a story now that is very dated and mostly wouldn't go over with a modern audience. Sandmen...why do they have to be Sand-MEN.... can't they be Sand-people so women can shoot down runners too?!?! See. They will make it Go Woke. Besides Star Wars will sue.
This is the first time I’ve seen this movie since it was new and it’s a little cheesier than I remember lol. But no matter, this is about your first movie reaction and I caught it an hour after release! So excited to start watching movies together from the beginning! Your first reaction was fantastic!
Some casting trivia: Michael York saw Farrah Faucette playing tennis and suggested her to play Holly. Holly's role was expanded somewhat after she was cast, to give her more screentime. The doctor is the son of the director. And it is very obvious if you see them in a photo together.
@@MirandaLikestoWatch Your spot on! Friends have told me similar things, from this generation, when they watch movies like 'Blade Runner'. The best Sf movies, in my opinion, were from the 1970s and 80s. Lots of reasons. Sf as a movie genre was finally coming into own in this period but also so many things were happening at the time - civil rights, Vietnam, the Reagan buildup, the green movement, etc. so moviemakers put extra effort into entertaining people and also posing serious questions.
Miranda, as a filmmaker you might be interested in the differences between novel, movie and television series. In the novel the age of Carousel was 21--for legal and logistics reasons there was no practical way to film this. Upping the age to 30 also made sense in the age of "trust no one over 29." The TV series couldn't pick up where the movie left off because the domes were destroyed when the computer overloaded and died. I have no idea why the television series didn't either just act as a prequel called "runners" or something like that. Showing a post-destruction dome would have showed Darwin's Survival of the Fittest in action as people starved. Another option was Logan finding that there were other domes and infiltrating them to free the inhabitants. Television serials are vastly different from one-off movies. I liked Logan's Run and found your reaction video entertaining. It is interesting to see a familiar movie through another's viewpoint. You showed me things that I didn't think about, couldn't think about, because we are different people.
Enjoyed the reaction..I realize I'm late to the party here, but the Logans' Run novel goes into greater detail of this 'world',including how it came to be,added scenes with Logan and Jessica as they make their escape etc. ..It's also quite poetic in parts. It adds more to the movie cos you see how much was left out/altered because of budget restraints.
When this movie came out in theaters Farrah Fawcett-Majors was a star moving into mega stardom but oh my gosh I fell so hard for Jenny Agutters Jessica 6. even at this review when she's on screen she still takes my breath away.

For the most part, all I can see is some... beautiful blonde babe reacting. Nice!" So, sorry to sound superficial, but u r very pretty, and you have a nice voice. I love these weird, old sci-fi movies from the 70's. They are such a vibe. I remember I checked this movie out from the library on videotape when I was a kid, and it it's just as goofy and weird as I remember it being back then! The robot especially cracks me up. 😆 Amazing to think that Star Wars came out just a year after this!
As an alternate theory: When the Computer read Logan's mind and began seeing images of Outside, a self-destruct subroutine was activate which destroyed the city while herding people out. The City was designed to keep people alive while the world recovered from an atomic war, and once it saw Outside through Logan, its purpose was complete.
The old man was played by the amazing Peter Ustinov. An absolute master of voice characters. He played a pirate in the Disney film Blackbeard's Pirate and many others.
Good morning, Miranda! Hope all is well with you! Logan's Run is a favorite movie of mine from the 1970s, when I was a kid. While I know that it differs from the book about some things, the age of 30 makes more logical sense than 21 does. That's something that should be considered by both writers and film makers when adapting stories from page to screen. I'm also going to recommend a movie to you (bit presumptuous considering I'm new to your channel, but I figure, "what the Hell")... the 1970s were a "strange" time for movies... Disaster movies and Dramas were huge at the time.... but Star Wars changed everything. Suddenly, Sci-Fi movies were highly in demand and it caught everyone off guard. Disney was known for only making "G Rated" movies at the time, even though "G Rated" movies were different back then, as many would be rated "PG" by today's standards. That aside... Disney decided to jump into the Sci-Fi game, and the movie "The Black Hole" was their first legitimate "PG Rated" movie ever released. To be honest about it, "PG-13" wouldn't exist for another 5 years, but The Black Hole would certainly be a candidate for that rating by today's standards. It **IS** on Disney+, but to find it, you have to use the Search function. I saw it in theaters in 1979 when it was released, and while many consider it a poor entry in the Sci-Fi genre, I personally love the movie (as I do Logan's Run). I haven't seen any other Reaction channels do that movie, so you may end up being the first. I will say that what we know about black holes has advanced over the decades since it came out, so it's not exactly scientifically accurate.... but it is a good movie, IMHO.
Bit of production trivia - The full scale interior shots were at the newly constructed Red Bird Mall, in Duncanville TX and the exterior water fountain shots at the Watergardens, in downtown Ft. Worth.
The book is very good and there are a few differences the big one being the age at which life is terminated.... Its younger in the book.... Great reaction ❤
Just to offer some side notes some may find interesting. The old man was quoting poetry from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Elliot: The Naming of Cats, Macavity: The Mystery Cat, and Gus the Theatre Cat were also later featured in Cats the Musical.
So cool that you've evidently read (or maybe watched an adaptation of) BRAVE NEW WORLD! The dystopia standard along with 1984. SOYLENT GREEN is the usual must-watch Seventies dystopian movie (with good reason), but SILENT RUNNING (1972) is also a classic.
I love this movie. Even with the changes from the book, which I probably read way too young. The biggest change is that in the book, citizens go to a "Sleep Shop" on their 21st birthday. Where they are euthanized by a gas that causes euphoria as it puts them to sleep. The age change was one of the things one of the authors hated most. A thirty year old has had some time as an adult. A 21 year old has barely begun their adult life, making it even more disturbing that people willing die so young.
Good reaction, Miranda. Peter Ustinov (the old man) was a brilliant actor. My favorite movie of his was Blackbeard's Ghost (1968), a Disney comedy with Dean Jones, Suzanne Pleshette, Richard Deacon (Mel Cooley from The Dick Van Dyke Show), Elsa Lanchester, a ton of bit-characters and of course, Peter Ustinov as Captain Blackbeard, the ghost.
The crystals on their hands change colors as they age. When they're born, it starts out clear. Then it changes to yellow, to Green, and then to red. One week before you turn 30, it starts to Blink.
Very good analysis as always. The other sci fi movie worth seeing is the Original Superman with Christopher Reeves from 1978. A couple thrillers that nobody has reacted to is: “Breakdown” with Kurt Russel. That was too realistic a movie and “No Escape” staring the late Ray Liotta. He stared in Field of Dreams. An absolute American classic. Lastly, there is one movie that is so far in a league of its own that everyone has been blown away by it: “The Devils Advocate” with Keanu Reeves & Al Pacino. You will not be disappointed. Hope you can watch them.
What an awesome choice for your first film reaction!
I would recommend Soylent Green from 1973. Another great dystopian sci fi film.

So it’s implied that no runners ever made it as far as Logan and Jessica because they were all frozen (plus they didn’t have weapons or anything to resist Box’s freeze Ray or whatever his gun did. )
I think the writers were hinting that Sanctuary was just as mythical as renewal and that everyone who had tried to reach it died too.
In the novel, Sanctuary was on a space station.
I always thought that they meant that all the fish in the ocean died!!! But what you said makes SO much more sense!!! WOW, it is weird when you just realize that you have been misinterpreting something for the last 48 YEARS!!!
An intelligent person reacting to classic film. I'm here for it! Excellent reaction!
That innocent little girl at 15:45 likes her coffee black...like her men. (Airplane!)
Is that the same actress?
@@artboymoy Yes indeed! Michelle Stacy
What?! That's awesome!
And the actress playing Jessica (Jenny Agutter) should be familiar from American Werewolf in London and various MCU appearances.
Good catch sir.
Great commentary. Relaxed, not too much talking, a little snarky. Love it.

@@MirandaLikestoWatch Hey Miranda
"fairy-tale rubbish" ..
sighh, there's more to the world of sci-fi than Star Wars pal. Try expanding your horizons a bit.
Poor Micheal York. Used to be a well know actor back in the day. Now he’s just know as, “that guy from Austin Powers” or at best, “Basil from Austin Powers”. 😂
I still say his performance as D'Artagnan in the '70s Three/Four Musketeers movies is his best performance.
@@LeChaunce True but he was good in Cabaret too.
He's great in this.
Michael York was Tybalt ("the prince of cats") in Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet in 1968. That was where I first encountered him, and that is how I remember him.
I am very happy to be here for your first movie Miranda! Forbidden Planet is an awesome movie as well!
I'm getting ready to film Forbidden Planet in a few days!
Another good suggestion!
@@MirandaLikestoWatchYay!
WB has had the rights since the 1990s and have been trying ever since. It's dead now.
Powerful futuristic, dystopian movie, but with a happy ending. Great cast including Peter Ustinov, Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Farrah Fawcett. Excellent selection for a movie to react to. Loving the channel. Look forward to future movies and TV shows.
Thank you!
There was also a Logan's Run TV series that ran from 1977-78 & had 14 Episodes.
It stars Gregory Harrison, Heather Menzies & Donald Moffat who plays Rem who is an android.
With a lot of production people who worked on Tos Star Trek 10 years earlier.
I liked the series. The need to make it last longer did bring back some elements from the book, like there being other communities on the "outside".
The actor who plays the old man is named Peter Ustinov. Another great movie of Peter's is "Topkapi." The movie was so good that TV producers took elements from it and made the Mission Impossible franchise.
And Quo Vadis and Spartacus. Also really good as Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile.
He was also in the film Hot Millions with Maggie Smith, a great comedy movie.

2:00 Mark! Greetings, Miranda! This is my favorite fictional city dedign! It was reused as the capital city of Planet Ork in "Mork & Mindy" and the sky was shades of red including pink. The color change hid the walls of the domes. 😊
Great reaction. Really perceptive. I would only add three little points:
The story is based on Plato’s “allegory of the cave”, which is the basis of many films and when you know it you will recognise it.
That will tell you how much a leap Star Wars made.
not much of a leap
@@longfootbuddy ha ha
When Francis and Logan were hunting that runner in the beginning of the movie, they were missing on purpose. They were toying with their prey, like a cat does with a mouse.
Bleak, dystopic, hopelessness was the core of all entertainment in the late '60s and throughout the '70s.
This is why people couldn't get enough of Star Wars.
Entertainment that doesn't make the audience depressed?
How shocking!
Except that Empire Strikes Back is the better film and it's a downer.
The reason we couldn't get enough of Star Wars was because no one had seen or heard anything like that before. Plus it was the introduction of the greatest movie hero of all time Harrison Ford.
Yes, others in this genre include Westworld(1973)
And Soylent Green(1972}
Harrison Ford is an ACTOR who played the heroes Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

Great choice of movie, awesome reactions and another fun reaction video from Miranda.
Good choices. I thought the 1960 Time machine was better than the remake even if the effects were not as good.
@@johnnygood4831 I like the Time Machine remake, but the original version should be seen 1st.
I'd also add the original "The Thing From Another World" [1951]
I forgot about that one. James Arness first starring role. It wasn't even close to the book. Of course, they didn't have the tech to be able to do it back then.
I'd also add "Things to Come" 1936 | "Fantastic Planet" 1973
Love this film, first saw it first in 76 at 13. A bit away from 30. The book Logan's Run is first of a trilogy, Logan's World and Logan's Search are the other two. In the books 'Sancuary' actually exists. This was the first film that had a true hologram, during the interrogation sequence. I would enjoy seeing your reactions to some other 70's sci-fi. I have a list, but two of my favorites are 'Silent Running' and 'Soylent Green'.
Also "Rollerball" (the original with James Caan, not the remake with the guy from American Pie and Election).
You maniacs! Its made of people!
Add to your list, "Colossus: The Forbin Project" (1970), an obvious inspiration for Skynet in the Terminator series. Also the distinctly weird, "Phase IV" (1974), and of course, "Westworld" (1973).
You should do the clasic 'Rollerball' sometime. Bigger budget, better actors.
Sir Peter Ustinov and better actors... That was a good one!
Glad to see this one. Some movies that are missed by most: Colossus The Forbin Project (First AI taking over thew world plot !). Fahrenheit 451, 1966 Ver. The Day The Earth Stood Still, 1950 Ver
A true classic. Not enough people know about it.
I have always heard about it, but had never seen it.
Thanks for your reaction.
"Such a phony veneer of happiness" love it
They live inside a dome with finite space and finite resources.
And the outside scene at the end was the Water Garden in downtown Fort Worth.
@Hammster69official ! Yes! Thanks! I forgot the name.
Just figured out what always creeped me out about Cirque du Soleil.

BTW in the book it was 21 and not 30 but the movie changed it so more actors could be used in the film.
well i guess the teen years are the most fun
Love your tee-shirt! 😍
Thanks for doing this sadly underappreciated movie.
1. In the book the death clock goes at 21, but they couldn't find enough actors.
2. GOOF: No way would Logan close that hatch with that much water going through it.

4. Jenny Agutter played Alex in "American Werewolf in London."
5. The last woman touching the old man's face. 😍😋😈
6. "Genesis II" has awesome miniature effects.
good grief, 21?
Yup. It had to do with the youth movement that was happening, with young people wanting control of things from the old guard. And also overpopulation too.

a little trivia. in the novel renewal was at 21. but the movie producers couldn't find enough notable actors who could pass for 21ish so they changed the age to 30, even though Michael York was in his mid 30s in real life. this was the first movie to use holograms.
@31:29 "Is everyone eating people?" That's a different 70s sci-fi film. One that stared Charlton Heston and Edward G. Robinson...
Great movie, and an even better book.
The costumes for males weren't changed in any of the adaptations!
For future reaction videos, I love some classic sci-fi, so I'd recommend:
The Time Machine (1960)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Battlestar Galactica (1978) - the series is also a mixed bag of awesome and eye-rolling.
I'm glad I watched it, it's a classic. And I agree, Hollywood is going to have to start making reasonably budgeted movies.
Another sub for the Aldous Huxley reference. Great reaction !
12:13 Mark! "As an adult"? Hehe! In the novels, the Computer tested people for their aptitude to determine their careers! That included being parents! You had to pass muster to be allowed to breed and raise a family! 😮
There were still such concepts as "outlaw biker gangs" but instead of wheeled motorcycles, they rode on hovering or levitating machines such as those in "The Island"! Or more recently, like the "robocop" in the 2009 "Star Trek" movie. They didn't resemble the "Star Wars Speeder Bike" which to me look like fancy modified flying vaccum cleaners or witch brooms! 😮 (See "Sabrina the Teenage Witch"!)
In the novels the giant "Crazy Horse Memorial Statue" is a completed art project.
‘The Warriors’ is also a nice rollercoaster ride

Some casting trivia:
Michael York saw Farrah Faucette playing tennis and suggested her to play Holly. Holly's role was expanded somewhat after she was cast, to give her more screentime.
The doctor is the son of the director. And it is very obvious if you see them in a photo together.
Really nice review and keep up the good work. These older movies are also great education for would-be directors and storytellers!
Thanks! It seems like the standards for writing back then were much higher. Modern Sci Fi movies seem so hit-and-miss with writing.
Upping the age to 30 also made sense in the age of "trust no one over 29."
The TV series couldn't pick up where the movie left off because the domes were destroyed when the computer overloaded and died.
The refrigerator scene is still my favorite. That and the scenes with the legendary Peter Ustinov.
Enjoyed the reaction..I realize I'm late to the party here, but the Logans' Run novel goes into greater detail of this 'world',including how it came to be,added scenes with Logan and Jessica as they make their escape etc. ..It's also quite poetic in parts. It adds more to the movie cos you see how much was left out/altered because of budget restraints.

when everything is provided there is no need to think.logan was told to be a runner so did it.only started thinking when he lost 4 years of what he was told was his by right and realised all was not set in stone.
I enjoyed your reaction.
At first I was wondering why the film's insert was so small.
I'm all like: "I can barely see Logan's run. For the most part, all I can see is some... beautiful blonde babe reacting. Nice!"
So, sorry to sound superficial, but u r very pretty, and you have a nice voice. U also seem like a cool, smart, interesting person. Thanks for posting your reaction. ❤
This inspired a very short-lived tv series that had Heather Menzies as Jessica - Menzies was the second eldest daughter in "The Sound of Music"
Another good one which also pre-dates Logans Run is The Omega Man with Charlton Heston also. 😉🖖
Wow great idea to do reaction to classic sci-fy. Many old sci-fy movies have fascinating ideas that are worth commenting on.
Miranda gets points for knowing what a Meow-Wolf Exhibit is!!!
I love these weird, old sci-fi movies from the 70's. They are such a vibe. I remember I checked this movie out from the library on videotape when I was a kid, and it it's just as goofy and weird as I remember it being back then! The robot especially cracks me up. 😆
Amazing to think that Star Wars came out just a year after this!
As an alternate theory: When the Computer read Logan's mind and began seeing images of Outside, a self-destruct subroutine was activate which destroyed the city while herding people out. The City was designed to keep people alive while the world recovered from an atomic war, and once it saw Outside through Logan, its purpose was complete.
that water sculpture at the end is a park in texas..it's still there as far as I know
The old man was played by the amazing Peter Ustinov.
This story is the direct result of the "Smart Cities" that they are planning.
Fun fact: Francis was Lewis Armistead in the movie Gettysburg. Can't remember the actors name though, but it's the same guy.
Correct.
I'm glad I found you. Great movie., Yes, do Soylent Green.
There she is...The pin-up of the century Farrah Fawcett!
