CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) lays out the strict rules of his country through song and dance... much to everyone's pleasure.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this 1933 Marx Brothers film, the mythical country of Freedonia is broke and on the verge of revolution. Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont), Freedonia's principal benefactress, will lend the country 20 million dollars if the president withdraws and places the government in the hands of the "fearless, progressive" Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx). At his inauguration, Firefly shows up late, insults everyone in sight, and sings a song about how he intends to abuse his power. Naturally, the crowd cheers wildly. Meanwhile, Ambassador Trentino (Louis Calhern) of neighboring Sylvania schemes to oust Firefly and take over Freedonia himself. To gather enough evidence to discredit Firefly, he sends his most trusted spies, Chicolini (Chico Marx) and Pinky (Harpo Marx). Five minutes after they show up in Freedonia, both spies become important members of Firefly's cabinet, though Chicolini keeps his day job as a peanut vendor. Firefly eventually declares war on Sylvania, an absurd farrago with Firefly changing uniforms from scene to scene, Chicolini going to the other side because the food is better, and Pinky parading around the battlefield with a sandwich board reading "Join the army and see the navy."

It's funny how contextually, Rufus T. Firefly exhibits more villainous traits in the lyrics of this song alone than Trentino does the entire film
He's basically saying, "If you guys think it sucks to live here now, just you wait cause I'm gonna make it worse!"
I'm wondering if it's a comment on fascism? As Firefly is literally advocating for complete totalitarianism, with some added corruption for good measure.
"...Good heavens, you can't go with your trousers up!"
"I can't eh? Well they won't catch me any other way."
I'm a Marxist of the Groucho type.
LOL
Best kind of Marxist
@@daRiddler32 It's an old French graffito: "Je suis Marxiste de tendence Groucho."
I'm both!
I met him in 1973. .World Theater...Love Happy..
He was in Bad Shape...With Erin Flenning..
Ah, an honest politician. One of the best political satires ever filmed. It's been decades since US filmmakers have made a decent comedy for adults.
I enjoy this one and "You Nazty spy!" that was a good one except it was a few years later. Still I enjoyed this one better than the You Nazty spy. This was longer and the jokes were a little bit less slap stick and more political humor. Its only a little bit. The Marx brothers relied more and normal jokes instead of slapstick humor that the 3 Stooges used. Still both comedic geniuses.
I can't imagine how the cast kept a straight face during the entire movie
They really didn't its more noticeable with the background characters though.
I grew up as a kid watching this movie on VHS literally hundreds of times with my dad! Groucho is the undisputed OG of comedy! it never gets old!
Huge Marx Brothers fan, just watched Duck Soup again last night. Groucho gets my vote every time.
You did not put an apostrophe in "gets." Are you sure you are qualified to leave comments on RUclips?
I just saw it on a big screen at our local theater
"Well stand him up against the wall and Pop Goes the Weasle" LOL
Groucho will Make Freedonia Great Again.
Fredonia...land of, the free.
The BRAVE and free!!
You mean he will build Freedonia Back Better
yes, groucho is the one putting his political opponents in jail for crimes groucho is guilty of.
Groucho's comedy is probably the highest level in terms of intelligence!
This should be mandatory viewing for all US Citizens now.
Groucho Marx's Gilbert and Sullivan influence was particularly evident in the song, as it's essentially "As Someday It May Happen" and "From Every Kind of Man Obedience I Expect" from The Mikado.
Commenting from the year 2020 here. This is so dang relevant it's not even funny while being hilarious. I think Groucho would appreciate that.
This is so relevant now more than ever.
The Marx Brothers are the best social critics of their time. Timeless!
Chewing gum? This sounds like the laws of modern Singapore!
"The last man nearly ruined this place, he didn't know what to do with it. If you think this country's bad off now just wait till I get through with it."
The theme of EVERY US President, Democrat or Republican.
Wow, a RUclips comment I don't hate
Wow, a RUclips comment I hate.
I noticed the same thing. It's funny how he knew this would come to pass, prophetic commentary from Groucho, wow.
No, it's Obama talking of Bush.
nope just Republicans. Esp. the satanic Trump.
this movie was made 90 years ago... and as funny now as it was then
Watching this movie, it's hard to believe it offended Mussolini by accident.
The brothers were delighted when they found out.
I would vote for Rufus T. Firefly over anyone running in the current election.
Laura, that applies again!
except for Howie Hawkins
Especially after what we've seen over the last few years....
At least I admit what I'm going to do. The last man nearly ruined this place you didn't know what to do with it, if you think this country's bad off now, just wait till I get through with it!
Can I quote you on that?
0:48 seems really appropriate tonight.
Still applies my friend.
oh how right you were
Called it
Such a treasure to watch a precode movie. The sanitization of film between 1934 and 1960 stopped many talented people from doing better drama or comedy. In some cases it offered alternatives not used in the original material, e.g. a play, but generally it only made movies more politically correct. The irony is that the same film companies who created the code were the same which tried to bypass it, e.g. when a director tried to keep more "politically incorrect" scenes.
this max brother is a brilliant performer,
probably greatest of all times.
Musicals were popular in the 1930s. I think this is supposed to be a parody of the genre. Same with the "Going to War" number later in the movie.
It's too bad the Marx Brothers were only able to work with Leo McCarey once. McCarey seemed to know how to make the most their abilities.
“I think this was supposed to be a parody of the genre” you don’t really get the Marx Brothers do you? Actually, respect for musicality courses in their Vaudeville veins. Musical comedy is a genre; see Andy Samberg for details
Everything in Duck Soup is a parody of something and all together it adds up to a satire of everything
The music was influenced by Gilbert and Sullivan
Happy 130th birthday, Julius Groucho Marx!
the last part where he sings with his pants up always cracks me up
Mrs. Teasdale: good Heavens! You can't go with your trousers up!
@@rufust.firefly2474 I can't ay? Well they'll never catch me with it the other way!
My car!! (I think it"s: they-ll never catch me with them any other way!!)
At 1:02, he sings to a curtain but continues with the song :P
Yea I thought that also until I saw the lady.
+Cooper Makowski Nah, you see him sing to the curtain, then move around to look at her. xD
I see it now.
There is a comedic reason he does this.
I'm sure that was just another "accident" that he immediately turned into comedy. He was that sharp. It was a lot funnier that way.
Excellent quality and wonderful to watch and enjoy. This clip and “Duck Soup” are timeless.
pretty much the hays code in a nutshell
Correct me if I wrong, since you may consider me to be under the same type of stupid, but didn't he mention the Hays Code all those four months ago simply because it was relevant to that particular era for the Marx brothers?
I doubt that he was trying to make a political stance against you lot.
menckencynic Okay then, thank you for the clarification.
I'm chewing gum while watching this! What you gonna do firefly?
Biscutbuu Horror Reviews
pop goes the weasel
stand you up against the wall and Pop! Goes the Weasel
And we tought this was nothing than a mere parody...
Heh, this came on earlier today. New Years Marx brothers marathon I think. Loved this part. Thanks for the upload.
Vote Groucho 2016
Hillary already beat him in the primary
Dustin Pelc rip Groucho
Jesus, I wish they had!
Is it me? But the brilliant Groucho was ahead of his time . So funny 😁
Ugh This movie sums up America perfectly right now.
3 years later and still applies!
Hey look! The administrations of the last 25 years!
This basically sums up the political situation in many countries these days, including America, Turkey etc.. This might be the main song for the German Party AfD, of which I hope they never make it into the parlament.
Marx Brothers are amazing.
My car! His excellency's car!
Too bad every generation doesn't get a Groucho. The one, the only.......
Best movie of all time
This is definitely the best comedy song ever filmed
id vote for rufus in a heartbeat
Biden watched this and took notes
I listen to this during every election cycle
Groucho! Talent personified!
Groucho looks like my step father. And they act the same type of funny

I will not stand for anything that's crooked or unfair
I'm simply on the up and up, so everyone beware
If anyone's caught taking graft and I don't get my share

They stand him up against the wall and take him for a ride
Rufus T Firefly: Whistling is

Also Rufus T Firefly: *whistles*
I would vote NOW for Rufus T. Firefly!! He's a great politician XD
I almost wish the Marx brothers had been enlisted by Indiana Jones' father to find the Holy Grail. How perfect would that be?
...we stand him up against the wall and POP.....goes...the Weasel!!
1:59 nice knees! XD
Not only was Groucho a great comedian, but, a decent singer, as well.
Priceless!
Groucho didn't make mistakes, he made opportunities
This song became true this century
A perfect example of double speak from the master himself.
1:37 Guy on the left looks like he walked straight out of a Leyendecker illustration
Groucho: Current politician
Grouch is our man, yes?
This song just became reality.
Even my grandkids love them.
"No one's allowed to smoke, or tell a dirty joke, and whistling is forbidden."
So that's where the college "Safe Zones" came from.
Bernie with a moustache
You can safely replace all of Fauci's tv appearances with this song
Timeless brilliance....Make Fredonia Great Again! Bigly.
0:59 to 1:07 is Bernie Sanders.
Spencer Frank Clayton Yep, Donald Trump did raise taxes his first week on the job, but mostly for working people.
Also, how he immediately acts like the Pied Piper after saying that, is like Bernie leading all the whiny, spoiled millennials astray.
exactly
I especially enjoy how Futurama parodied Freedonia when Bender won the women's robot Olympics
This should have been David Cameron and Nick Clegg's theme tune when they came into power!
Hilarious and loaded with irony!
brilliant quality clip
1:34 the president we need in 2018
I think Trump or Drumpf watched this clip and adopted the principals into his campaign.
Specifically "If you think thing's are bad now, just wait till I get through with it"
Heh so this is where RUclips's ideas come from
How did Groucho know that Trump would be elected?
I don't pray to Jesus. I pray to Groucho.

justin trudeau sang this same song after he was re-elected
People all over the world have been wondering how Biden came up with his plan to be president. It's all revealed in the film clip above.
Of course, when Groucho announced this in DUCK SOUP, he was only joking. Groucho, after all, had a functioning brain, and a great sense of irony and sarcasm (and really good writers).

What is the music that is played I used to know it but forgot lmao
It's the national anthem of Freedonia
Hail, hail Fredonia!
To all those answering I found what I was looking for. It was the music called Dixie which was used in the civil war. That’s the music I was looking for.
@@condaquan9459 We were of absolutely no help!
natedogg4116 I mean it’s the thought that counts lmao
Great Marx Brothers movie --but in this scene I've always hated the part when Groucho approved of the young "beautiful" woman leaving her older frumpier husband for the young "handsome" man and saying put him up against the wall and "pop goes the weasel".
pop goes the Sneasel?
Groucho Marx 2020 and 2024!
1:12 to 1:25 is Hillary Clinton.
this is true today
My write in vote for 2020
“if anything like pleasure is exhibited. Tell me and it’ll quickly be prohibited. I’ll put my foot down, so shall it be;
This is the land of the free.”.
and
“… 🎶 we line him up against the wall and 🎵
POP goes the weasel! 🎶 “.
Fascist political theory in smaller than a nutshell, this definitely is right at the heart of it 😂, and I’m not 100% convinced that ‘Duck Soup’ didn’t actually hasten the onset of WWII 😂.
Also, with the knowledge that there are surely no accidents in a Marx Bros skit/film, i find it quite funny how he plays “Dixie” on the piccolo as he’s singing about all the stuff he’s going to outlaw and how he’s going to enforce those bans with “POP goes the weasel”. No “America The Superior” hypocrisy here. I love Groucho. Chico & Harpo too, but Groucho is the baby 😂 (of the talented Marx
bros).
