Catching My Biggest Catfish On The Demon Dragon Rig!

- The river was roaring with a high current at 61,000 cfs. TVA decided to lower the lake levels in preparation for Hurricane Florence; therefore, releasing the flood gates below the dam. I was itching to get out to do some anchor fishing. To be honest, the day was quite tough! I was battling high winds and hot, humid weather. This made for a rough day of fishing. I anchored 6-7 spots with only 2 spots producing some quality fish. Biggest fish of the day was 26-27 lbs, which happened to come off the demon dragon (my biggest fish on that to date).

Time: 7:30am - 1:00pm
Water Temperature: 82°
Current Level: 61,000 cfs
Bait: Cut skipjack
Tackle: 7.6' Shattered Cat rod and a 7.5' B'n'M Silver Cat Magnum rod with an Okuma Classic XT CLX-300 L baitcaster levelwind reel spooled with 40 lb monofilament line carolina rigged with an 80 lb monofilament leader down to a Team Catfish 8/0 double action circle hook and a santee cooper rig with the demon dragon peg float with an 80 lb monofilament leader down to a Team Catfish 8/0 double action circle hook

It’s getting that time of year for the blues to really start turning on, isn’t it?!?!! The Flatheads should start turning on too, and really next month, October, should be the best time to catch the biggest Flatheads! They’ll gorge themselves before they start heading to their wintering holes! Good catch there Joe!
I miss those flatheads! I tend to do best in the Fall catching those fish.

A fish finder rig is tuff to use in fast moving waters, the sinker stays but the bait floats up in the current and often ends up towards the top of the water. When i fish the fast moving James river here in VA i just dont use the sinker slide and use a slightly longer leader so that my bait stays close to the bottom and have great success with big blues in upwards of 80 pounds.
I hope to fish the James River one of these days. There are some GIANTS in there. Tight lines!

Two questions. #1. Does Bass pro shop carry good catfish hooks? I.e

I'm asking because the nearest Pro Shop is over an hours drive one way. What to make sure I'm going to get what I'm looking for. Lol
Yes and yes. Academy carries what your looking for as well. But before you make the drive I'd give them a call. Eagle claw makes a nice circle hook. Up to size 8/0. And some sell no toll sinkers. Pyramid sinkers work just as well if that's your only option.

Just curious what brand and test your line is... I would never hook into anything nearly as big as your cats. We have some hefty channel cats I run 30# braid with 20# leader.

Red river has some good cats. you would be surprised where you can catch big cats at. Most all lakes have them in north Texas.

I know TWRA does some tagging on fish, especially with the lake sturgeon that was introduced some time back. It would be interesting to see the migration patterns of these fish.

Chat I don't know if you know this or not here okay but three years ago I was fishing with a buddy of mine out on a boat and the game warden came by and checked us out on the water and we had three poles a piece a fishing and he told us to take one of them up cause we were allowed two poles in the water and that was it too in the state of Tennessee where we live at okay I don't understand how you can fish with five poles in the water at one time down there when we're not allowed to up here in east Tennessee too have a good day and bs and bc out there too I'll ttyl now
From what I've read from the state regulations, there is no rod limit in the state of Tennessee. Were you fishing for catfish? And where were you fishing?
We were fishing on the French broad river up here next to Newport Tennessee which flows into Douglass lake and that's what the game warden told us about the fish poles here okay
They might have changed it around here too but I've not heard anything about it if they have too okay
