- The science behind the Bible's clean and unclean foods, by Walter Veith.
Veith was professor of the zoology department at the University of Cape Town and taught in the medical bioscience department. During this time the department was awarded a Royal Society London grant for zoological research.
No more shark fin soup for me 🤢 I am sad that all these unclean foods have to go, but obeying my Creator who designed and made me is more important to me than satisfying my flesh. Lord Jesus, help me.

The dietary law fulfilled
I would like to show the reason behind the dietary laws that God gave the Israelites and how their purpose has been fulfilled. First I'll address a common misconception....
Were the "unclean" category of animals, forbidden because they are unhealthy?
Actually, horse meat is considered to be healthier than beef, and both rabbit and squirrel are better for you than chicken. It wasn't about their health and wellness. It represented something.....
Acts 10:12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14 ¶ But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
15 ¶ And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Peter understood this to represent the Gentiles.....
Acts 10:28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
The same list of "unclean" animals that Peter envisioned in Acts 10, are the same ones listed in Hosea.....
Hos 2: 18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them (Israel and Judah) with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
Note that it says they will lie down safely. The Jews and the Gentiles will be as one.....
Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 ¶ For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Paul references a passage from the OT, where clean and unclean animals lie down together. Here is his reference....
Rom 15: 8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
10 And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.
11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.
12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.
Paul says that Jesus came to confirm the promises made to the fathers. The last OT passage that he cited is found in Isaiah.....
Is 11: 1 ¶ And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.(see Hos 6:4-5, Rom 7:11, Matt 23)
5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.(Matt 11:28)
So in Romans 15:12, Paul references Isaiah 11:10, the context of which is Gentiles coming in with the Jews. The clean and unclean animals are a representation of this "mystery" (Eph 3:3-6)
Jesus used some of these same descriptions from Isaiah 11, to illustrate what was happening during His ministry.....
Luk 10: 17 ¶ And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
18 ¶ And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
The children at the hole of an asp and the cockatrice den is of the same type as serpents and scorpions, which represents devils. What about the children part?......
Luk 10:21 ¶ In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
Jesus referred to His disciples as "babes". He also said ....
Mat 19:14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Is 11:6 states that a little child shall lead them. Mat 18:4 says virtually the same thing. John also used the term "children" quite frequently when addressing the church in his first epistle.
Lev 20: 24 But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.
25 Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.
26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.
The Israelites were to be a peculiar treasure to God. They weren't to defile themselves with the "unclean" Gentiles as Peter stated in Acts 10:28. Lev 20 is saying that this is why they were to put difference between clean and unclean beasts.
However, the prophecy of Hosea has been fulfilled. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile. They are all clean in Christ, which is why the reason for separation has been done away with.....
Col 2: 16 ¶ Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
1Tim 4:1 ¶ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
Only those who were weak in the faith, avoided eating animals that they felt were "unclean". They dare not forbid others though.
Something else to consider...
Lev 11:27 And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.
28 And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you
Yet God had the Israelites make the covering of the tent out of badgers’ skins, which was to cover the rams’ skins (Exo 26:14). The ark of the covenant was to be covered with the badgers’ skins when in transport (Num 4:5,6). Badgers’ skins are unclean. Whoever touches them are unclean. Why would God do that? (Heb 9)

The dietary law was fulfilled but not done away with. Too many want to make Yeshua say “I have not come to abolish the law but I came to abolish it.”
A lot have become confused over what Messiah meant by fulfill.

Genesis 1:11-12 plants before the fall. 29-31 plants were for all as food before the fall. Thank you for this great teaching.
YHWH wants his people to be healthy this is why there are certain food He doesn't want us to eat.

those we are not suppose to eat werent even supposed to be considered as "food" to begin with. Just because we can eat it, it doesn't mean we should.
My dad loved shellfish, especially mussels in sweet marinara sauce. However, that was among other shellfish he consumed. He wound up getting a horrible case of hepatitis. It was so bad, he was hospitalized. The hepatitis weakened his heart, suffered a massive heart attack, & died. It happened when I was in high school (a Junior at the time). The day he died, I just broke down and cried because I felt suddenly overwhelmed. And it was the very hour he died. I truly believe that God speaks to us when certain tragedies are about to occur. Similar situation for my mother years later, but that's another story.

I keep finding these little Gems Max. While i'm very wary of SDA's, Veith does speak a lot of truth. Iv'e held this theory since i was born again, that the food the Lord said we shall not eat... is actually bad for us and it's yet another case of father knows best. For me, sitting in my room alone, with my bible, i have to say it was one of the most PROFOUND moments of waking up and understanding the Lords mind and his infinite wisdom. I stopped questioning him, started adding "your will be done Lord" to my prayers etc.
Once i wrapped my head around this, the entire issue of salvation began to truly take shape. He really DOES love us, he really DOES want what's best for us, and he really doesn't want any of us to perish in hellfire. The whole, mean authoritarian God that sadly, many churches give the impression of, didn't make sense anymore and i understood what i had was a GIFT, not earned, not deserved, but freely GIVEN to me.
Then i began to look at my pets a different way lol, how i still loved them even if they took a dump on my bed, or had a 2am cat chase through the house wrecking my stuff and clawing up my furniture, but BOY did i really enjoy the most loyal, and lovable ones. That came when i called them, were by my side with me, loyal to a fault!

Yes! Walter has some great insights to topics of why God required certain things of the Jews, and how they weren't necessarily arbitrary obedience rules, and there was reasoning behind it.
I am not an SDA, a vegan, or a vegitarian... but I am certainly not a fan of pork.

Christ said what goes into a man is not what defiles Him because it doesn't enter his heart.
👵So, I have heard that all flesh brakes down into numbers, the numbers differ widely from clean to unclean and it's interesting that the unclean meats digests so quickly that the body has no use from it. It basically requires the body to expend energy and resources (vit. and minerals) to digest and expell w/o receiving anything useful in return. Simplified, yes, works for my attention span. 🙏🤗💖

Meats can be eaten, the Clean mentioned in Leviticus 11(Bible). I agree with the Professor the healthiest diet is a All Plant based diet of vegetables, nuts and fruit.

I take issue with saying there are certain "foods" we should not eat (the gentleman makes this comment at the end of the video). Unclean animals are NOT food.

Paul was talking about our spiritual temple not the physical by keeping immoral laws. We cleaned by God's spirit.

Morals are a man made invention likely really invented by the devil. It seems to me like this whole "morals" thing came on the scene AFTER the Lords commandments... as a way for men to do things THEIR own way.
What is moral to you, may be immoral to others. This is why i say forget "morals" follow the Lord the best you can. Given the obvious fact that we're at constant war with our flesh.

How often are we responsible to tell others of these facts before we leave them to their desires to eat whatever anyway? I work with uncountable Sunday Christians, and the pastor that runs the Senior Center there believes we’re going to play bingo in heaven. (Okay, he’s entitled to his opinion), what’s saddening is, they all follow his leadership to believe that no matter what you eat you just need to pray over it, then the Lord will make it OK to eat. But I found Sunday goers, calling themselves Christians, will look through every Scripture they can find to try to justify their lawlessness. instead of trying to please the Lord, they fight against Him, trying to find ways they don’t have to please Jesus Christ. is this mind thinking real Christianity?
My questions are limitless when it comes to the way people try to dodge God. If you’re going to do something wrong, just admit you’re doing wrong, don’t try to cover it or hide it, bringing others down to do it with you.

Too bad it’s not sufficient that God simply said so, that we need to know why to validate anything God says. Sabbath? If it makes sense to us. Pork? If there’s some other reason than God said so. Do you really want to be that kind of “believer” that decides for God which of his laws make enough sense for you to decide to obey him? Something about “depart from me, I never knew you” comes to mind.
On the flip side, if we are wanting to know because it gives us more insight into our Heavenly Father and his care and love for us, it’s pretty neat information.

You seem to be confusing “law” with punishment. Do you not know the difference?
As for the new covenant, Hebrews 7 explains what changed. Our obedience to God is still required. Jesus said it over and over, it couldn’t be more clear. But animal sacrifices and men acting as high priests and the ever changing laws and traditions created by the Pharisees were done away with and replaced by Yeshua’s sacrifice and his role as our eternal high priest whose laws never change.

Sacrificing animals was part of His commandments. Same with stoning and wearing a beard and installing handrails on your roof and making pilgrimages to Jerusalem three times a year.
It’s all part of the law. 613 Commandments.
So did His law change? Do you do all of the above?

I do everything applicable. You seem to be regurgitating something you heard somewhere and it sounded to you like Jesus decided Satan was right when he told Eve there’s no reason to obey God. There’s a reason God wrote his commandments in stone, and there’s a reason those that oppose God hate God’s commandments enough to teach others to disobey them.
His commandments are now written on the hearts of his followers, meaning we know them by heart and think on them daily, and do them out of great love as well as out of fear that breaking his commandments would separate us from his love.
Obey God and teach others to do the same.

Heb 7: 11 ¶ If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
Has there been a change in the law?
If one believes that there are unclean things and they do not eat them... there will be far less doctor visits and/or etc.... so this must be bad, eh?

1. Matthew 5:17-20(KJV) NEW TESTAMENT
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

The problem today is that plants before the flood were not only larger, they contained more nutrients and vitamins originally. Experimental plant growth has produced increased yields as well as additional nutrients and vitamins. These modern shortcomings within plants is probably why God added Kosher meats after the flood.

I'll eat pork and bacon more often in the winter, but by more often, I certainly don't mean every day. If you cook high quality pork thoroughly enough, anything parasitic in the pig will be gone. Besides, anything else in the pork that is not usable will be excreted by the body, esp. when someone is eating enough fiber, leafy greens, etc.

We don't know how Noah knew between the two it doesn't tell. There were no food laws at the time. It was given during Moses' time. We need to consider things are different back then than there today. We process meat. Take out the impurities. They may not have had away of doing then.

c jones We are to recieve with thanksgiving. Noah wasn't under a covenant. Yet he made sacrifice to god. His faith in god counted as righteousness. The only covenant he was under the rainbow that god would never again destroy the earth by water.
1 Timothy 4:4 does say we are to receive all food with thanksgiving, but read the verse after that...it says "because it is consecrated by the Word of YHWH and prayer. What is the Word of YHWH at that time? The "Old Testament"! What does the "Old Testament" say about what's food? It says that clean animals are food and unclean animals are not food! Therefore, Paul is saying here that all food - as defined by the "Old Testament" as clean animals - is to be received with thanksgiving!
Side note: read 1 Timothy 4:2-4:3. Does that sound like any organization today? Maybe the Catholic church???
Hebrews 11:7 does say that Noah had faith, but it says that as a result of that faith he obeyed YHWH by building the ark that YHWH commanded him to build. How many more examples do you need that faith alone is dead and that our faith is shown by our works? And those works are following Torah since Y'shua said they do not go away until heaven and earth are gone (Matthew 5:17-19).
Some kind of Torah or laws have always existed from the beginning. Torah is described as light in Proverbs 6:23. What was created on the first day in Genesis 1? Light. This light was not the sun, moon, or stars. They were created on the fourth day. There may not have been a formal covenant yet, but there was most definitely a way to please YHWH and act out our faith/belief in Him and that was following His commands. Were there Torah commands that existed before Mt Sinai/Horeb? Yes, there were sacrificial laws (Genesis 4:4 looks a lot like the sacrificial laws in Leviticus), unclean and clean animals in Noah's ark (Genesis 7:2), and Joseph knowing that adultery was a sin (Genesis 39:9).

Let me be perfectly clear how I view the Torah: it is not what I get my salvation from. I am saved by faith in Y'shua alone, but that faith is shown through my works which is following His Torah to the best of my ability. I have given you examples of this from both the "Old Testament" and the "New Testament".
The condemnation or curse of the Torah that we were under was not being able to return to Him because He divorced Israel. Now that the husband (Y'shua/YHWH) has died and been raised, we can return to Him. The curse of the Torah was a result of breaking Torah by committing idolatry. Torah itself is not the curse or condemnation. You find me a place in the "Old Testament" where the Torah is described as a bad thing. It's only described as blessings, light, life, the way of the wise, truth, perfect, etc. There are curses for not following it, but Torah itself is a very, very good thing. God does not want any believer to eat the pig, check out Isa 66 : 17 , and Ez 44 : 23 [Niv] bible . Those principles concerning the "physical" in the O. T. are very valid and should be followed . We are not talking about the" spiritual"l [stoning someone for adultery] , but physical principles , it's different .
He told Noah that he could eat them. The covenant for unclean foods were only under the Sabbath day covenant not under the new covenant.
Jesus commandment were not the same in the law. One thing he was a different tribe.
The bible says he will come out Judah.
Jesus always changed the law. He was from a different tribe. Not the levites. Like in eye for an eye. Look in Chapter 5 of Matthew. He made the old law obsolete.
This is a perfect example of how Christians today aren't familiar with Torah, but still feel qualified to say that Y'shua taught against Torah...even though they don't understand what Torah is lol.
I am familiar with Matthew 5. Y'shua knew that people were going to interpret what He was saying in that chapter as thinking He was doing away with Torah, that's why He said in that chapter in verses 17-19 that "Do not think I have come to destroy the Torah and the prophets, I have not come to destroy but to fulfill". Look up the Greek word "pleroo" that translates to "fulfill". In that context it means "to fully preach or teach".
If your interpretation is right and Y'shua did do away with the Torah and then said "do not think that I came to do destroy the Torah, I have not come to destroy, but to MAKE IT OBSOLETE. But, ALTHOUGH I'm MAKING TORAH OBSOLETE, nothing in the Torah will change until heaven and earth pass away. ALTHOUGH I'M DOING AWAY WITH THE TORAH, if anyone breaks any of these commandments and teaches others to also, then they will be the least in the kingdom. But if anyone does them and teaches them, then they are great in the kingdom". That's essentially what Y'shua is saying if you're right. Y'shua becomes completely nonsensical, contradictory, and probably a little schizophrenic lol.
If you still want to delve into the specifics of Matthew 5, we can. But I want you to realize that Y'shua takes the time in this chapter to clarify that He is NOT changing/doing away with/making obsolete the Torah.
