    The show was based on a stage play, The Banana Box, three of the cast were from that show so knew their characters very well coming into it. The exception was Richard Bekinsale who was the best known at the time. Its difficult to overstate how beloved he was, as well as Porridge he had other TV and Radio shows, such as The Lovers a sitcom about a newlywed young couple. The action film actress Kate Bekinsale is his daughter.

    Only just this moment noticed you’ve ventured into “Riding Damp” (I left you after you ended Still Game). Excellent! I hope you stick with it. There are lots of excellent episodes. Here are a few of my favourites:
    FAVOURITE RISING DAMP EPISODES
    * Things That Go Bump In The Night (S2 ep7);
    * For The Man Who Has Everything [Christmas Special 1975]

    I absolutely love Rising Damp
    Especially the dynamic between Rigsby and Philip
    Rigsby is obsessed with what he considers "traditional British values" - Well educated, well spoken, well connected, charismatic, impeccably dressed, etc
    He finally meets all of that in Philip, but shock horror - Philip happens to be black - and it absolutely messes with Rigsby's entire "Old Empire" mentality
    The cast are all fantastic stage actors too, so the acting is always absolutely on point

    Rising Damp, if anything, is ahead of its time. Back in the day, some landlords wouldn’t have even let Philip through the door. They would have had signs in the windows saying “No Blacks” etc. Rigsby is ignorant and narrow minded but his comments never come from a place of malice or hatred. Stick with it as it gets really good as the characters begin to gel. Also, Philip is the class act. He’s the wealthiest, the most smartly dressed and best educated out of them all.

    Richard’s hair becomes a wig at some point during this series as he had to have it cut short for Porridge. I don’t think the producers were best pleased.

    This is an anti racist comedy, it is looking at the racism of the other characters, whether it's Alan's well intentioned curiosity, Miss Jones and her desire for an exotic relationship and of course Rigsby's overt racism. There were several comedies tackling this in the seventies, but this is by far the best. That's because that isn't all it us, most plots don't revolve around it, and the four stars are wonderful actors. But also it explores Rigsby's motivations so well and his very complex relationship with Philip. As you can see already he is as much a snob as he is a racist.

    Hope you stick with it kevin to me it hasn't dated open mind yes its classic writing &acting. It was filmed in leeds.richard Beckinsale died @ 31 in 1979,he had two daughters one is kate Beckinsale. Please watch more Kevin its really showing you the ridiculousness of stereotypical side of racism. Porridge i recommend next to watch.leonard rossiter was a great actor who also died early he was a fit bloke who played to a high level of standard @ squash. Rossister was in an episode of steptoe&son 1972 Christmas special one of my favourite episodes. I could see you were in two minds stick with it you'll get into the plots &characters its not really about racists & biggots.i do like the way you react never really stoping & never talking over plus its a clear picture no copyrights full screen with you tucked away.i like laurel &hardy & thats over 100 years ago.so thers hope for rising damp.

    The whole point of the series is to mock racism and class prejudice.
