  • Angel's Egg is a haunting and beautiful film. Just what is it trying to tell us?
So, this is one of my all-time favorite movies and I figured I would kick off this channel by analyzing it. I missed a few smaller details, but the video pretty much summarizes the basics of my theory pretty well.
Here are some extra points that I forgot to include -
The Fishermen: The fishermen are hunting shadows which they can never catch, like how the girl is grasping for something to believe in. This might also have something to do with Plato's Theory of Ideas.
The cross: Symbolizes a heavy burden being carried by the man.
The giant eye: Represents the idea of a god.
All footage and music are from the film Angel's Egg.
    Thanks for watching!

The way she screamed when she found the egg shells was one of the most authentic pieces of cinema I’ve ever heard. I felt as if the young girl was the female bird from the arc that never returned and he was sent to find her

I LOVE this interpretation, however I interpreted the movie differently.
To me, the moral of the story is that it is impossible to prove or disprove the existence of gods. and that it is also virtually impossible to forcefully change/destroy the religious faith of others.
Occasionally, those without faith will perceive something that challenges their agnostic/atheist views (such as when the man dropped his jaw after seeing the skeletal remains of the giant bird), but it will never actually be proof of a god's existence.
On the other hand, those with faith will occasionally have their faith challenged (such as when the girl fell into despair after realizing her broken egg contained nothing), but this doesn't imply the absence of a god, either...
When those of faith and the faithless both respect each other's paths in life, there is harmony.

The real twist of the story was how dedicated the soldier was to destroy the egg while having a idol depicting exactly what he wanted to destroy....

Thank you for making this video, its a great analysis. I especially liked your interpretation of why the girl collects the water in bottles and you even brought some meaning to the turning hand in the beginning of the movie.
I myself have thought of the girl and the boy as symbolizing a persons inner struggle as he grows and begin doubt his own faith, trying to prove to himself its more than just blind faith.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for the comment - I feel like the hand turning scene is what brings the whole theory together.

This was a very refreshing analysis of the movie and definitely nice to see a take that wasn't solely based on the religious themes within the film!

I’m trying to become more media literate but I tend to be atrocious at it when it pertains to anime like this because there is so much subtext. I did observe (though this was probably surface level) the symbolism of the girl carrying the egg with her potentially being a Virgin Mary of sorts, the scene where she’s submerged in water could refer to baptism, the man carried a cross on his back the entire time which parallels Jesus before his crucifixion (although I don’t really know what it could mean beyond him bearing the burden of carrying what he sees as the truth). I had considered the idea that the girl and the man were meant to symbolize an internal struggle Mamoru Oshii was having at the time of making the film but you articulated it much better than I had a picture of in my head. I like to watch video essays like this because even if they’re bad (this one was not) they generally point in a good direction on what to look for when rewatching the movie so that I can form my own opinion. Thanks for making this, I’m excited to rewatch it!!

i never really saw any interpretation of the film like this on youtube
to me this video feels like this more like how the author feels
although we might never know what he meant to say by this
i like this video a lot

What a UNIQUE, thoughtful and beautiful representantion!! Up until this point, having watched several other videos analysing the movie, I have never encountered one like yours, specially talking about how both characters can be viewed as one, specially since her hand literally turns like his at one point, like you mentioned. So I deeply appreciate you for making this video and for having it immortalized here. Thank you. Much love from Argentina.

04:27 thats good suggestion that he is fragment of her subconsciousness....
I mean there probably is the reason why at the very beginning the girl tiny hands turn into the soldier dark skinned hands.

It's certainly interesting to watch an interpretation of a movie I adore that is so different from my own. Especially your comment about imposing different meaning on this work based on the viewers own experience. My interest in religion made me view this as a story akin to a *litetal* biblical parable, as opposed to something happening in her own imagination or reflecting it. I doubt of course that Mamoru Oshii wanted this film to be an actual biblical analogy, but to me it felt that way. I sadly didn't get to read the childhood classics that you listed at the beginning, otherwise I might have maybe come up with a similar interpretation to yours. Who knows? Certainly fun speculating and thank you for the video

thaking dreams and lies for realty only brings despair and death, nightmares and madness. What are the cost of lies? To not be able to see truth again. But realty doesn t care about what you think it doesn t care about our dreams and hopes it just be, causality crushing everything in his way

But what about the birds growing at the end of the film? Doesn't that imply that the little eggs actually did have some effect in generating faith/a connection to God? Not to mention the girl being a statue on the big eyeball at the end.
The analysis here makes sense but I can't really make sense of this contradiction in the film's subtext.
Anyway, I'd also criticize the idea that it's either blind faith and explicability of the world or rejection of faith and admission of nihilism and brute facts. Commitments to explicability *imply* the existence of God as a necessary precondition of the world. That's just the whole class of cosmological arguments is all about.

Well, to be honest I don't know if I hate or love this movie. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the best movies i've already watched! Not knowing a consistant theory is my nightmare! I watched it because I love Dark Souls and in the 3rd game there's some mentions about it. Actually the game is strongly inspired in angel's egg as a whole. I have many, many theories. All of them fit at some points, but none of them cover it entirely. I'm searching for something that fits it well since I watched it about 20 days ago. I started thinking the more I see, the more I know but when it ends, I only have more doubts. It's taking my peace.
My favourite storie used to be "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" but now i'm not so sure...

The girl pursues her faith differently than the fishermen. They run chaotically and greedily all over town destroying things and never catching a fish... The girl carrying the egg is illuminated and glowing in most shots also she collected the water repeatedly almost joyously. I think her introduction to the tree story was like eve waking up. While the man is a priest but not divine. Hes pretty much obsessed with watching her and watching that eyeball in the sky. I still feel like he raped her/violated her. Taking away what was her choice to attempt to hatch the egg versus breaking it open. He did it without her consent. There is no proof that the egg would not have hatched had they been patient. He was impatient after seeing the Angel on the wall aka breaking the egg. There must be some sort of japanese social undertone here I am missing interpretation on but picking up vibe wise. His choice to force the girl/holiness to the crux of rape/egg break. Reminds me of the pressure of Rod Reiss in attack on titan. Rod Reiss obsesses over the titan power and royalty but never wants to become the titan himself. Instead hes some crazy ass follower of the titan power. Another example of this social awkwardness around witnessing divinity but not embodying itself by the person chasing it - is Shinji Ikari's dad. He obsesses over the human instrumentality project... but is willing to watch/obsess over Rei becoming lilith. or Shinji being the vehicle to divinity. Aka like willing sacrifice... but never man enough to do the job himself or to embody the power they obsess over. Its very japanese....
I also feel like the characters are in some sort of time loop. He stares at the eye at the beginning. Which is noted to have the goddess statues in prayer. He reveres that eye god thingy. They are statues...almost like buddist statues you see at temples. I feel an overlay of Buddhism and Christianity here. maybe he stares often enough and does the loop so many times hes forgotten. However the girl offers something different. He chooses to willingly sacrifice her egg because he knows shes different. By the end of the movie.. he doesnt care if he possibly drowns in the water. He is witnessing that a change to the eye has indeed occurred. The man has forced his physical tangible will / faith and has witnessed physically that the girl physically has died and some how reincarnated / transmutated spiritually onto the eyeball with her own differentiated shrine which represents some sort of honor achieved.
The eyeball is God. He will never be eternally honored on that eyeball. She returned to "source" with the egg." hes still just standing all alone on that beach. He isnt greedy like the fishermen, he is patient but physically to involved in the tangible world of his faith and forces it. The girl didnt force but just faith the egg would hatch. Because of his force he will never return to source/peace. The girl didnt force it - she returned to source and has peace.
He will never experience true enlightenment. He said the bird never returned to noah's ark. Yet the girl believes the bird is within the egg. There is hope still she believes. By sacrificing her... she promulgates hope further in more eggs. Hes a sort of destructive force always stomping out faith aka like churches and clergy. His cross actually weighs him down.

The director took the film as an ambitious movie where all interpretation are meaningful in thier own mind. Each people view the same ambitious & could interpretat or miss interpretat in thier own way or how they lived thier life . I'm simply words it's an modern art or like clouds each view different, which lies on thier own minds?
You can telling any interpretation of this film which gives meaning for ambiguity !
But really ambiguity is ambiguity we can't give meaning to it ! It could be like 1/0 which gives infinity possiblity by remaining the ambiguity !
And you did a such a good job of interpretating ?

    • @OmPrakashomie
      @OmPrakashomie 6 лет назад +1

Or this is what the director wants to say human always gives meaning , time and effort for nothing . Because it's what it's ! Our mind always fill the void & can't accept it's meaninglessness !

I agree. The ambiguity is one of the things that makes Angel's Egg so great, in my opinion. I love that it means something different to me every time I re-watch it. In a way, the film grows up with the viewer.

I think that the man is actually Jesus, he always had that cross with him, there are also bandages in both his hands. I also personally think of the girl as his mother(mother Mary) due to their strikingly similarities, and how she is portraying as a virgin who is pregnant(the egg under her dress make it looks like she is pregnant). and What i think actually happens is after god (the alien race within the ball spaceship(which is actually just human)) wiped out all living creature from the face of the planet(the dinosaurs), they decided to come back and check on things. the god(human) technologies were so advance that we were able to create a living organism in any shape and from they want, i mean just look at the tank, that thing looks like its alive or something with all that sounds it makes and the organs showed when the man jumped down from it. Later the man tell the girl about the story of Nour. the god that stay behind with all of his creation(dinosaur). Nour knew that the others gods hated his creation and wanted they to be wiped out due to their vicious nature, and so he build an ark in hoping of saving them. later in the film the man discovered that the bird was a lie and so was the egg which i couldn't make any sense out of.....like...why would Nour lie about sending out doves to find land? maybe because he wanted to give his crew false hope that they will find land eventually? omfg my head hurt. wait wait... so...what if the message was actually about how religious is bullshit? we see that the mother mary pregnant was a lie and so was the bird... so...is the message behind this film is about how religious is actually bullshit? and despite knowing that it is bullshit we all still believe it anyway because it gives us hope...i dont know mannnn
