  • We’ll never know the full story of where this little lady came from, but we’re pretty certain she was a RTF kitten here in Tampa, where they are released in the area that they were trapped in before going to the county shelter.
Rules vary across the country, you can learn more here: humanepro.org/return-to-field
I believe Return To Field makes sense for adult truly feral cats that were already surviving outside, they can be spayed/neutered/vaccinated and returned, but kittens that are only 2+ months old and are just scared out of their mind in a noisy shelter setting being deemed “feral”… we are truly failing them, what do YOU think?

All they had to do was send her out onto the floor or to a Petsmart..... she was such a beautiful kitten, she would have been snapped up. This may be useful in some cases, but that kitten was super sweet and beautiful, so she wouldn't have taken up space for long. Its very superficial, but if you're making these decisions, you need to think in those terms too. I'm glad you found her. I don't think the SPCA where I got 2 of my cats does this. I have a cat that was from a feral litter and he was insane from the beginning, I'm sure they're still surprised anyone took him home. He's claustrophobic and just screamed in his cage. I only put him in a carrier if its absolutely necessary and never for long. He's about to be 7 and he's still insane and just too smart for his own good.

Thank you Chris for saving this baby's life. I am amazed that a shelter would spay a kitten at only two months old and return her back outside to try to survive on her own. This is dangerous and cruel. Many kittens and cats are labeled as "unadoptable" and/or "feral" by shelters, when in fact they are just scared.

The Humane Society in Pueblo Colorado, was doing RTFs last summer, releasing two-month-old kittens into the wild, with seemingly no concern for their chances of survival in the brutal summer temperatures (~100°F) of SoCo. Snakes, scorpions, spiders, coyotes, mountain lions, feral dogs and traffic were just some of the other threats they faced. Managed to rescue and foster three beautiful kittens, but wept for the ones that were sent outside to fend for themselves.

We recognize that location, there’s a Sprouts and several other stores and a Church next to it, that back road is a very busy spot with trucks and lots of cars using it to avoid the busy intersection in front of the shopping center, and is a dangerous place for a wee little kitten to be trying to survive in, RTF is a terrible idea for little kittens just so they can “look good” on paper,
About a year ago we had a little kitten show up at our house looking in the window at my adult cats, terrified but very friendly and happy when I brought him into the house. I can’t imagine how scared this little must have been, thank you for being an Angel of mercy to her.

Failing to spay or neuter cats & dogs is such a big problem, but seems especially problematic with cats. It is such a shame :(

You're a good man Chris, thanks for saving that little sweet heart. What a beautiful face, and thanks to the family who took kitten in.
I'm not crazy about kittens being sterilized that young, I understand the reasoning, but it often leads to health problems in later life. Leaving kittens that young in the wild is cruel, especially if they're not from that colony. The other cats might not look too kindly on the interloper. Here in Lancaster, PA, we've had animal treatment issues with one of our shelters. The public outcry lead to major changes in policy and staff.

We made sure that they worked with them and adopted out instead or we found rescue situations for those that the shelter wouldn't work with. Thank you for noticing and saving her. I have a colony that I and a few others feed. We are working on getting them all spayed or neutered. I have taken in a bunch of the kittens and they live in a 1700 foot enclosure in my backyard. They are vaccinated and neutered and have shade in the summer and a heated shed and heated beds in the winter. I also have 10 rescues in my house. I really am a crazy cat lady. 21 cats. And a small colony.

I think most of my cats if they were dumped at the noisy, scary county shelter might be deemed "unadoptable" because they would be petrified and hissing... exactly why these young kittens should have a chance in a foster home and some real socialization before being dumped outside :(

First of all, thank you So Very Much Chris for rescuing this little sweetheart of a kitten. What a beauty! I hope she has a Wonderful life in her fur-ever home!
As a fellow cat colony caretaker, and who has done well over 350+ "RTF" or, also known as "TNR" I think it is Morally Apprehensible to have spayed this kitten & put her back on the streets! Whoever "assessed" this kitten to be a feral, apparently does not know WTH they are doing! She would have easily been a target by wildlife, or beaten up by an Alpha in the colony, or targeted by some nefarious person luring her with food!
Chris, I hope that you can find out Who cares for this colony (by leaving a note by the feeding area), & asking these people to Please Never "RTF" another little kitten! Maybe you can give them your # & ask them to call you, so that you can help by finding them a foster & fur-ever home!
Thank you for all that you do! You're doing So Much good in this world, & we LOVE you for it!!!

That’s so sad, I think that most rescues here in the UK will always home kittens feral or friendly. Thank you for giving her a chance to live in a loving home.

It's so sad she was left alone there, and I must say it also hurt to know she was spayed that early, because she looks like she is 3 or 4 moths old.....thank you for saving her.

I believe that to return a kittten back to the field is a terrible thing to do to, and I think it is a little cruel. Thank you Chris for all you do to educate people about are furry little feline friends. Keep up the good work and I can't wait for the next video.

I just picked up a cat at a local taco shop. I could tell she wasn't feral at all, as she had no problem going in the door to seek out some one. She ran up to anyone that called to her and just wanted love. She was a beautiful tortie at about 6 months old, so perfect age to get adopted at.
My city has the main county shelter, but they no longer take in stray kittens, deeming cats as "community animals" and will only take in owner surrender cats that pay a fee for giving up their animal. I was lucky enough to have a friend that lives in a nearby city with a shelter that take in stray kittens. So I know she'll be able to find a good home.

How lucky was this little one that you were driving by? I agree with you, RTF should only be done with truly feral adult cats, but I know limited funds (and space to socialise a kitten/keep them until adoption) can weigh in these decisions... which is unfortunate for those little ones.
Anyone else noticed she had cut whiskers? I wonder why.
