Download Festival: Is It Really That Scary?

- Since 2003, Donnington Park in Leicestershire has played host to the UK's biggest gathering of rock and metal fans; the Download Festival.
Ever since the dawn of the modern rock, it has been looked at as a genre for the outcasts, the freaks and the alternative. With stories of Ozzy Osbourne biting a head off a live bat on stage, Marilyn Manson proclaiming himself the 'Anti-christ Superstar', huge mosh pits breaking out, and plenty of angry lyrical content, it's easy to see why some would see Download Festival as quite an intimidating place to be. But is the uk's biggest metal festival really all that scary?
We headed down to this years event to chat to some of this years acts to find out if there is really anything to worry about; or if in reality they are all puppy dogs.

It is not scary. It is one of the most chilled places I've ever been. Rock and alt people are some of the nicest you can ever meet and if you fall, it's a guarantee that someone is going to help you get back up again. It's just so great!!
2016 was a teensy bit scary. I called it Drownload that year. 😅

Soggy but not scary...
Took my wife for the first time last year. She was 48 at the time and was into Take That, Rag n bone man, stuff like that. Pink and Guns n Roses were about as 'rock' as she got. She decided to go last year to see Guns N Roses. This was her first ever festival. Just walking from the campsite to the arena (we were quiet camping so it was a bit of a trek) she turns and says 'we coming next year ? I love this place'. As payback for her dragging me to Take That a couple of years ago, thought i would give her a baptism of fire and we'd watch Napalm Death. You could see her face light up as we approached the Dogtooth stage, she turns to me and says 'i'm going in!'. It's crazy i can remember that, it was the exact moment she 'changed' (her words, not mine). You look at the cd's in her car now and there is everything from Marilyn Manson to Slayer to In This Moment. It really is a wonderful, friendly place and would recommend anyone try it at least once.

i dont even like rock music, was working there this year and the crowd were very friendly. i put it down to the fact that rockers can handle their booze, unlike the kids at v and reading festivals.

What is scary is how thick so many are who are so quick to judge and clearly haven't a clue. Metalhead's are some of the nicest most, non-judgemental, easy going, polite and friendly people you could ever meet. Download is the best music festival in the UK by a country mile.
"The moshpit looks like a fight, but it's a family" pretty much says it all. Damn shame Heck broke up, only got to see them once but it was a hell of a show.
Yes is is scary, scary on your wallet, very expensive corporate crap with expensive weak beer.
i live in Long Eaton a town not far from Download. if the wind blows in the right direction,i can hear the bands playing. its not a clear as being there but i still hear it. Its the new generation of the monsters of rock.🤘

KiLl3R Mem3StAR there were only five bands at that show, so I’m pretty sure any modern day festival beats it. Crowd size no possibly not, bout variety yes

2018!!! OMG IM SO EXCITED
I went to Download when I was twelve, and on the way in, thousands of people are packed into one area trying to get through one gate. It was hot and quite nerve wrecking on the way in, but i was up the front for the rest, and i was fine. Its a nice place to be.

I'm happier walking round Download for 5 solid days than I am walking round my local shopping centre on a Saturday!!! So....no!! Download number 12 next year!!
Scary?? Not at all. I wasn't that into the Heavy Metal music at 1st,but decided to go with the lads and see what it's was like as a festival. It's the best I've ever been to and this year would have been my 4th time. Absolutely gutted. Very friendly crowd and the only scary thing would be the prices at the food courts haha
I've been 7 times since 2009 and I just love it. I've fallen down a fair few times but every time I've always been picked straight back up. I also know it as Drownload and Brownload

Scary, c'mon dude it's Download Festival, not Brutal Assault, Obscene Extreme Fest or Rites of the Black Mass. Truth be told none of them are scary. They're fun.

No its not scary. What it is, is an awful festival, anyone that says it is is deluded, the line up is great 2/4 times. But yeah anyone that says u have to walk 30min to the tent then another 30min to the arena is good then all hope is lost.
