  • Derek Flack was born in Detroit in 1948 and enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduating from high school in 1966. After training in San Diego and at Camp Pendleton and becoming a radio operator, he initially served with the 3rd Battalion of the 28th Marine Regiment in California. When the Tet Offensive started in early 1968, he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the 27th Marines and sent to Vietnam. After several months with 2/27, he transferred to the 3rd Battalion of the 7th Marines, who were short of manpower. With both units, he worked as a radio operator with a tactical air control team, and spent most of his time in the field on patrols. While with 3/7, he suffered combat wounds and was sent home.
Note: The audio and video are a little out of sync here, but this is an old interview and we can't do much about it. He's worth listening to in any case.
