    I remember Vanessa talking in an interview about how difficult it was to sing this song, I remember as a little boy I was 11, on the day of Dr.Clarks funeral how we stood in line waiting to get into Bailey Cathedral, Vanessa cried and cried, this was her mentor, the lady who discovered and groomed her and pushed her into all the greatness that she has become for over 40 years!!

    I was there for this. I was 21 years old in the balcony. I had always heard this song but had never heard them sing it in person. It was amazing. And the late Ronnie Kersey on the organ was BEAST.

    She did a great job too. I wish they would’ve did more for the funeral scene. They made it comical a bit in the biopic.

      Yes I agree. It was like they threw it in only to give proof of Deneice's antics. Looking at the true footage, Deneice wasn't as obnoxious as they portrayed her in the film.

      I’ve seen big funerals before... But this was something. You can feel the energy and the importance of this woman’s life. It could have been a big dramatic scene Ala “Imitation of Life”... Instead they went the trashy way. Denise was the obvious antagonist of the film. I want her to come out and do another interview to tell how she truly feels. That wasn’t right.

    @voncarlosdiaz Vanessa recorded an updated version of "Salvation Is Free" in 2005. It can be found on Ron Winans' Family & Friends V. Her performance is nothing short of heartfelt and annointed.

  • @MrStyle23
    @MrStyle23 15 лет назад +10

    When Aretha was a Gospel singer she was a Gospel sing and when she started singing secular she was still in touch with her Gospel side.
    Rev. C.L Franklin enjoyed all types of music and that is why she was able to sing secular music because her father was open to different types of music. A lot of baptists did have a problem with Aretha becoming a soul singer but that is all history now isn't it?

  • @msscott73
    @msscott73 11 лет назад +20

    I agree but remember that being anointing doesn't mean you shouldn't have talent either. Someone anointed to sing the Gospel should study and perfect their musical and spiritual gifts. Dr. Clark had her children/students/choirs also working out their soul salvation in and with song. Singing and living for god was worked out together.

  • @loopyman76
    @loopyman76 16 лет назад +29

    Vanessa was indeed very young when she started singing in the Southwest Michigan State Choir under Dr. Clark. She was actually 12 years old. Eventually Vanessa got married and started having children and cut back on her singing until she released her first solo album.
    Vanessa does give much honor and acknowledgement to Dr. Clark who was like a "second mother" to her. I've always viewed Vanessa as "one of Mattie's children".

    • @musickfreek
      @musickfreek 4 года назад +1

      tarajon Simons She sounds nothing like Mattie Moss. You are reaching with this one. Mattie did not do vocal acrobatics and her tone was a lot different from Vanessa’s.

    • @CeliniacForLife
      @CeliniacForLife 4 года назад +1

      I love music So are The Clark Sisters, but they were Mattie’s daughters, trained under her, and Dorinda definitely sounds like her. So why can’t Vanessa? Stop being a bitter Betty.

    • @musickfreek
      @musickfreek 4 года назад +1

      Dominique Deveraux Mattie didn’t train the Clark Sisters to sing. She taught them her songs and they learned them. That’s not training them to sing. They already had a musical gift that they developed because they were put in situations where they had to learn songs. They all influenced each other with Twinkie being their biggest singing influence. However each of the sisters had other singers they mimicked like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. I am not being accurate, I am just not a fan of misinformation.

    • @jacegainer3841
      @jacegainer3841 Год назад +1

      @@musickfreek Whew. I know this conversation is 2 yrs old, so perhaps you've reevaluated your thoughts? But If you haven't- 😂 LOL. Both comments of your comments were loud & wrong. VBA has her own distinctive sound, but it wasn't a reach, you can hear MMC's influence on her singing this song. I implore you to go & listen to Mattie's original version from the 60's. VBA was reading the lyrics off that paper and still made several of the same vocal choices as MMC did. Couple examples is the riff on "salvation", the placement of using distortion on several of the same words & the timing.

    • @jacegainer3841
      @jacegainer3841 Год назад +1

      @@musickfreek & LMAO at you saying she didn't train her daughters to sing. I don't like misinformation either. It's really not hard to find TCS interviews individually and collectively talking about how she trained them. But I guess you must know something that they don't know? The woman traveled the country training COGIC choirs, creating workshops & holding seminars. Also founded "The Clark Conservatory of Music" where she helped train even more singers & musicians but somehow her daughters were exempt from being trained by her? 😂

    Dr. Mattie Moss-Clark really was somebody special to attract these names--Aretha, Vanessa, James Moore, etc... to pay her tribute and honor on her homegoing. When giants in the church, like her, go home, their shoes are awfully, awfully hard to fill.

      You mean Aretha alone? The only one you listed who wasn't under her tutelage was Aretha. The others owed it to her, she made them who they are in Gospel music.

    I just think her schedule got too much. Vanessa was very young when she started singing for Mattie, 14 years old i think. As she got older i imagine she just wanted to do "ordinary" teenage things. However, i would give much thought to her album TQ's. Karen has used the same TQ's since her frist album LOL. Doesn't meana she doesn't appreciate the new'old poeple in her life any less.
