Thanks. Circular polarisers really do help with large bodies of water. It's amazing how you can change the look of the water with a simple turn of the filter. 👍
Informative video. Thank you for all the information. I would like to ask if any step up ring (77-82mm) in the market will work with the freewell filter (CPL and the VND 82mm)?
Thanks Keith! They do their own step up rings but any one will work. It has the adapter with the magnet that has the thread on the back, so that will screw into any step up ring. 👍
Mike.. that was brilliant....really well put across.. as always.. and for me - a good refresher .. I have all the filters you describe here and will definitely go for the storage pouch.. thanks again for a very good video'... ''All the best'' of good wishes too for 2020...Cheers from.. Dj.
Super, Mike! Great overview and clear explanations! A quick question regarding the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 lens ( which I am finally getting in a couple of weeks!) Like, you, I don't use a protective filter on my lenses normally but I did pick one up for that lens. Do you keep yours on it all the time or just when you are working in harsh circumstances? For instance, do you think it is necessary to have one on the lens when using in the city streets, as well as, say, when walking around a windy, rugged coastline? Thanks again!
Thanks so much. 👍 I only really use it when I have to... So when it's windy and sandy... In the city it would be fine. Just make sure you get a good one so it doesn't decrease the quality of your shots. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thanks Mike, that's good to know as I was a bit worried after hearing about the internal zoom of that lens possibly sucking in dust. I figured getting a good 67mm filter for it was not bad thing as it will also fit my Tamron 28-75 and my Sony 24GM lens if I feel the need to protect them.. Mind you, if the weather is that bad, I would probably be inside having a coffee somewhere instead!
@@chryseass.5143 Haha!! We're all fair weather photographers from time to time! 😂 That sounds like a good plan. I've kept all of mine to 67mm lenses for that very reason. 👍
Hi Mike! Great video!! I've been waiting for you to discuss filters, especially the X pattern you see in variable filters! I have the tiffen one and it's good for video, but I've noticed that blue cast a bit. Maybe I'll upgrade to the Freewell brand you mentioned that was that true stop! And less blue hints! -Mike
No worries... I hope it helped. I've done a couple on variable NDs over the past year or so. There's this one: ruclips.net/video/pK0BR8g7DHM/видео.html And then this one: ruclips.net/video/JFFaynfI4Os/видео.html I hope they help. 😁👍
Practical review (nice intro, btw). Do drop-in filters pose issues w/cleaning and maint considering their larger surface areas? DP Review recently posted a segment on UV photog where (as an aside) they demo’d how cheap UV filters did poorly at filtering out UV light.
Thankas Paul, I haven't really found them to be too much of a problem with cleaning... I just keep them in their pouches and just use them sparingly...its a good point though as they are pretty big bits of glass/polycarbonate... Yep, those cheap uv filters are not really great for anything. 👍
Most definitely... I'm collecting them so when I get enough, I'll do a comparison test. I've just got a light pollution filter as well so it'll be interesting to see how it works. 👍
Great video Mike, i had some great fun using a 5 point/star filter not the best pics but good fun, question well silly question if i brought 6 and 4 stop would it make a 10 stop screwed together. All in all just another nice T btw 👍
Thanks dude! Yeah, the star filters are fun but any other photographer will know exactly what you used as soon as you share or show the photo! 😆 Yes, correct, if you get those two, you can make a 10 stop, just watch the vignetting on really wide lenses...anything over a 20mm would normally show a vignette once you stack two of them... Also, if you get a 10 stop, you can then stack them all to get a 20 stop...🤔 Thanks for watching. 👍
Great filter overview, Mike. I just bought the CP, 10 stop, 6 stop and 3 stop Freewell magnetic filters. Two of the three are are marked down on Amazon right now for about $20 off per filter. I would like your opinion on the Sony 70-200 2.8 versus F4. I am about to pull the trigger on one of those. I know there is a huge price difference, but if you could have one over the other, would you go with the 2.8 even though the weight difference is so much more. I don't have a photography store nearby to hold them and play with them. I just don't want to regret not spending the money if the 2.8 is a superior lens. Do you have any experience with these? If so, I would really appreciate your input. It would also help if I could blame you for spending the extra grand with my wife, so there is that as well.
Haha!! It's always good to shift the blame...and I'll be your scapegoat if needed! 😆👍 I've used both and I absolutely love the 70-200mm 2.8...it is a fantastic lens and helps get results time and time again. If you can afford it, get the 2.8, you wont regret it...it gives you the edge in low light, you get better subject separation and it is actually a really nice weight to shoot with. 👍
If you hate UV filters then just use a Tupperware lid! Haha just kidding. Again another great video...always concise, immensely helpful and fair. This is what every RUclipsr should be like. Thanks
I'm sorry, HDR-tool at Capture One Pro20 is not image blending, it just operates for one single image, although it shall be very good. Then we neither got Image Blending (true HDR), Panorama or Focus Stacking:-/ Guess you'll not think more about Capture One now. To be honest why I ditched Adobe was because of the tiny icons on my 13" Dell, I couldn't use the sliders. For C1 the icons are large and a pleasure to use, even on my small laptop. I'll stay with C1 anyway, because now I know this software quite well, and will prioritize making images rather than learning new software. Even drop to learn Affinity Photo for now. Will rather learn to print my images for different mediums, like Danile Milnor.
@@mikesphotography It's more like Lr now I think, although I only tried Lr Mobile. The big difference is that you can work in layers and that you can buy the software if you want to jump skip. In the future free software might be good enough, and then you can just buy a copy of the latest software, so that you can keep your edits on the old photos. The big thing for me though, with my 13" laptop, is scrolling. C1 works perfectly with my Dell now!
@@mikesphotography By the way, after struggling a while, I found that for me the easiest is to organize everything by date folders. On my a7III I set the camera to store images on date folders on the memory cards, and when I make a new Catalog in C1, I import these date folders directly into Originals of the Catalog, using the automatic date folder tool in C1. When my laptop is full, I store my Catalog on 3 external harddrives, one outside, one in the basement and one on the shelf. Then I make a new catalog on my laptop, and marks it with the number of the year. Sometimes I make a session from a Catalog, if I want to extract just a few images, like for a project. But this is just my workflow, which works best for me.
@@mikesphotography After using the new interface of C1 for some days now, I must say it's much more convenient, and it's a pleasure to use on my Dell 13". But it was really a disappointment that there is no image blending, focus blending and panorama. But maybe they saved these for a new tool tab for C1 21? So that they can get yet another hype and marketing potensial? That's why I'll advice you to get a subscription now, and buy the software when Pro 21 is out. I'm sure we'll get these features sooner or later, I think they just prioritized the interface this time.
Ah, it's just improved HDR-tool, which only means they have added black and white sliders to highlights and shadows recovery. Nothing really revolutionary about Pro20 at all... Anyway, the scrolling is nice on my small Dell 13".
