  • TUNING FOR JAZZ AND ROCK
The two-part series on tuning is designed to give you insight on how to achieve a good drum sound. While there are many techniques that can be used, I am presenting the ones that have worked for me over the years.
In addition to the information presented in the series, please keep in mind that there are other factors that can determine whether or not you can achieve a good drum sound. The techniques discussed here make an assumption that the bearing edges of your drums are in perfect symmetry and your hoops sit on the drums properly. If you are still having difficulty tuning your kit after viewing this series, you may want to investigate the other aspects of your kit. One easy thing to do is to place the drum shell on a flat surface and check to see if the symmetry of the shell is correct. If there is a problem with the shell, take the drum to a local drum shop and see if they can help you.
