    You’re dead on. Used modeling “amps” are an amazing bang for the buck for bedroom recorders. I went from a pod hd black bean to the helix, but like you said, non guitar players would give 2 shits about tiny tone differences. My pod hd sold for $150. The helix was $1000. 100% sure friends wouldn’t know the difference

      sporkcrx i returned a helix and bought a pod hd for exactly 150. No regrets. Probably gonna get a floor unit for my tube amp+cab and use the bean with my computer. I dont really care about the finer nuances, a chuggy amp and some basic delay or reverb and im good.

      Not one bit! I doubt the regular person off the street would be able to tell a Peavey Bandit from a Friedman (not head to head, of course), or even if they could, they don't care, seriously, this "gear talk" I think has gotten a little out of hand (I'm as guilty as anyone else), especially in the last 5 years or so, with RUclips exploding like it did, I never heard so much gear talk in my previous 30 years of playing the guitar as I've heard in the past 5 :) It's all good, like I said, I love gear too (and have way too much of it), but other than "us", no one cares, they are there to listen to your music

    • @Syklonus
      @Syklonus 4 года назад

      After being in the recording game for years I've learned one thing - the average listener doesn't give a shit want you use, nor can they tell the difference between this and that. The only people who actually care are obsessive weirdos, gatekeepers, and folk like me who have to know about those tiny differences. However, I love the PODs, and I strongly advise any beginner to pick one up to get started with tone crafting, FX, recording, and they can even buy a power amp later down the line. The only thing that really lets them down is the high gain sounds, but even then they're not unusable. The quality of the cleans and effects are case enough to get one.

    Side note: I'm also a Mesa clean fan and I don't think it gets any better than the clean channel on an Electra Dyne. I hope one day it shows up on the channel, but it's relatively obscure and definitely an acquired taste.

    I loved my POD 2.0 when I got it. Upgraded the chip to 2.3. I was starting with guitar and I was amazed how this thing sounded. Then came the POD XT (I didn't like it much), then the Boss GT8 that left me a bit cold and finally my AXE FX II XL+ which I love but I really enjoyed the "hated" original red bean. Fun times!

      The Mooer Pedals are very versatile, I picked up the Radar and three different premaps to use as a make shift rig for practice. I even bought an Fx loop to put in between the Radar and the Preamps to utilize the Four cable method like you would for a real rig. I am currently in the process of making a video on make shift rigs as well I often find myself watching this guys videos because of how well informative he is.

    I have used the POD XT with amp models bypassed and just used the time based fx. That works great too, use the foot controller FBV and you have real time control. I have done a video where you can't see the POD XT. But it was used for tape echo and reverb. I used Orange Micro Terrors and EHX English Muffin and BD-2. Got killer sound.

  • @tunasalad970

    Cool comparison. I’m not much of an effects guy but it’s cool to see the old Pod effects are still decent.
    I picked up a Pod Pro recently, it’s on 1.2 firmware (equivalent of the Pod 2.0 on 2.2) and it’s a lot more blanketed sounding than my Pod 2.0 bean on 2.3 firmware (the final one). I’ve got a 1.3 eprom for the Pod Pro coming though, which is the equivalent of 2.3 for the bean. Apparently improvements to the ‘no cab’ happened in that final update. I can confirm though, my bean sounds great into a power amp and cab, but the Pro on 1.2 doesn’t, really.
    If you want to continue the Pod comparisons, I’d skip the XT and get the X3, same modelling but it includes all the amp models. With the XT, if you want all the amp models, you’ll have to buy the Metal Shop, FX Junkie, and other model packs. Or buy an XT that already has the packs installed.
    PodFarm is also XT models, but in plugin form.
    I guess I have a soft spot for line 6 as I started playing electric guitar with a PodXT, went away from them for a long time, but that ‘Line 6 sound’ must be engrained in my mind or something, because I always come back.

    • @PlagueScytheStudios
      @PlagueScytheStudios  5 лет назад +1

      I too have a 2.3 EPROM on the way (hopefully, assuming it doesn't get lost between here and Italy). Glad I'm not wasting time on the Pro then and can continue content with something that should sound better.
      I can't find reliable sources either way, but is the modelling architecture truly the same between the X3 and XT? The name would certainly suggest it, and I'm aware of the expansion pack situation. I was simply under the impression the quality difference was more akin to something like the AXE FX II vs AXE FX original rather than a relatively minor firmware update.
      If that's the case though, I'll certainly follow your advice when I tentatively aquire a representative of the other POD generations. Thanks!

    • @tunasalad970
      @tunasalad970 5 лет назад +3

      XT and X3 (and podfarm and Vetta) are indeed all the same modelling tech. Though they all differ slightly in their layouts and flexibility. For instance Vetta and X3 can do dual amps, though they both do it slightly differently.
      I never did a direct comparison as I sold my XT then a couple years later got PodFarm, but all my old XT patches were compatible and sounded like I remembered. I remember when the X3 came out and I was so disappointed it was the same modelling repackaged.
      As far as sound quality differences between them, I’m sure there are slight differences, as they’ll likely all be using different converters, slightly different processors, etc. But the underlying models/modelling is the same. You can check the manuals for the various products and check the amp lists.
      I guess when you change architecture there is probably gonna be some minor differences, for instance the Pod 2.0 was updated in the mid-2000’s to operate off flash memory rather than Eprom, so it can be updated via midi. I’m told these ones sound slightly different despite being the same amp models as the eprom 2.0 (though I haven’t tried one yet). You can differentiate them based on physical appearance - the eprom Pod 2.0 pedal input is labelled ‘Pedal’ where the flash version is labelled ‘FBV Pedal’. Also, one-digit screen vs three-digit screen. Then you’ve got stuff like the pocket pod which is flash Pod 2.0 but smaller.

    • @PlagueScytheStudios
      @PlagueScytheStudios  5 лет назад +1

      Excellent, good to know. I knew about the signal routing differences, but I'm glad the Vetta tones are possible on both generations. Sounds like the POD vs POD video I want to do eventually will simply comprise of my updated 2.3 vs an X3 vs HD, so that saves me some time and money.

    On the xt I also use the bottom shelf EQ around 300 HZ, with a 4-6db cut, notch some 200-350hz, boost 3-3.6kHz a few dB and roll off the high end fizz with an aggressive 12 dB cut at 7-11kHz to taste. I can send you an Xt live if you’d like to toss it in the mix.

  • @81giorikas

    Well, pairing a radar with a pod isn't a bad idea at all, it also does post eq which is great: It doesn't eat the headroom inside the modeller.
    People may remember how, the pod XT paired very well with external eq digital or analog. That hi end problem: You couldn't really eq after 8Khz in the pod XT as well...couldn't wake it up inside the modeller.
    It's really logical: Imagine a frame in which you have to paint the sound amplitude, that is its headroom. So if they allowed for more hi end etc,...it would make the less of the signal content less loud in response (to fit the hi end increase as a peak inside the frame).
    But if this "problem" is after the line out of the pod (digital or what not), probably accompanied by extra amplification of the signal, then the better for it.
    That combination worked really well for the pod XT and it was with the behringer deq. Which was also midi controlled, high headroom etc.
    What line6 did, though, much much more important that what other companies did later on.
    The first time my mind was blown away was in a concert on a jimi hendrix tribute.
    Some bands played with amps, fender combos, marshall stacks, etc. The blues player (incidentally the most hendrix-y of them) played with a flextone or what was that head and he gave the signal direct on the board. Immediately every effect and sound sounded clearer than the others. I had to know what it was. He was also the local line6 at the time (around 2001). Made me listen to samples miced from his amps and re done with the pod 2.0 etc...So close (for the time). Mind blown away.

    My wish is to find someone who does a test with more cleaner solo/arpeggio/comp sounds. As I wrote that, you just start a sample of clean sound.
    But what I actually mean is if you could compare the different POD’s with a more clean sound and more bluesy sounds. Many like to compare.

    • @PlagueScytheStudios
      @PlagueScytheStudios  5 лет назад

      I wouldn't say there's a best, which is why I own so many drive pedals. My favorite clipping diode pedals are the Boss SD-1 and its derivatives which can be had extremely cheap compared to even mini TSs. See the pedal head episode on those two for an in depth comparison.
      For contemporary material, a good old 7 or 10 band EQ is my go to to drive the high mids and cut the lows.
