I agree. They’re also very upfront if they’re sponsored, whereas some people try to just pretend they regularly talk like that when they obviously don’t. And they also always be sure to sponsor things that they know work well and that they like.

I have a tough time with anxiety, and public places just like that also can give me a bit of sensory overload. This was a good reminder of just how privileged I am to be able to fully express (for lack of a better term) when I’m overwhelmed. Abby is so lucky to have awesome parents who are so attentive and in tune with her needs.

Abbie did an amazing job!!! You go chick a dee. Also walmart causes me to have really bad anxiety attacks. Every time i walk in that awful place i prepare to have one. I sing (out loud) this little light of mine while walking around that filthy place it helps but still i avoid it like the plague. If i can get it some where else i do, if its at walmart the hubbers picks it up.

a friend of mine got sensory issues after radiation to her brain, she said she could hear electricity in florescent lights , she said it would sound/feel like tiny high pitched bees , AMD she said after she left stores she could still hear it , her doctor said it was tinitus (sp?) but she said she had that too but that this was different , it actually gave her panic attacks and made her feel faint cause she could feel it too , weird dont know if it is realatable but hey, oh she also said the long bulbs that were flickering or about to go out were the worse, she is better now

As an adult who has sensory difficulty in stores, while the components are similar, such as lighting and ceilings, there are differences in how upsetting each store is for me. Like Abigail, even though the lights and structure similar in craft stores, I have few problems there. In trying to figure things out, I've noticed the major differences are the number of people, noise and how the isles are set up. Craft stores are frequented by the elderly, thus generally quieter and they also have wider isles. Walmart on the other hand, is often a totally immersive experience for me. Screaming babies, lots of people, lights, cramped isles. So, I often go to Walmart at night. They dim the lights, less people and of course less babies, equals an easier experience for me. Or another good example is at the mall. The main part of the mall I cannot handle well(food court, etc) but, anchor stores like Macy's are just fine. Low music, carpeted floors make all the difference. For me, Walmart is like walking into a carnival, while Macy's is like the library. Oh, and its coo-pon.

I don't have sensory issues, I had a breakthrough with myself recently, I have a fear of pain say something that might sting. I'm 25 years of age, and about a month ago, I got my ears pierced for the first time!! 😁
That's the best thing about life, no matter how old we get we never srop learning, and that in itself felt like a massive milestone achieved, just like with Abigail, good on her for sticking at it! 😁😊😀😄❤💙💜 xo

when Abbie struggled in the store it reminded me of our visit to the usa with our asd son when he was 3.5yrs. He was fine in most stores except Walmart and old navy for some reason they caused huge sensory overlode resulting in very distressing meltdowns. He is also a very selective eater but on that trip he started eating hotdogs, bbq sauce, sour cream dips with garlic bread sticks and pancakes ….. all of which he still loves now! p.s we are on Asa's team...we say 'coopon' (coupon) in the uk!!

Large stores like Walmart and Hobby Lobby are full of all kinds of sensory assaults. The lighting, the way the aisles are laid out and the smells from artificial scents (those chemicals go straight to the limbic portion of the brain, and the limbic portion deals with emotions and the "flight or fight" feelings, amongst others) can all cause sensory overload. By you saying that she acted scared and was unable to walk properly I would imagine that it is something that she cannot control and thus, not something that would need to be challenged. But of course, I am only seeing a tiny bit of your day, so this is just me, sharing my thoughts. I have sensory issues from Chemical sensitivity and I cannot go into either store.

    hello : )
i believe that the fluorescent lights and the sounds of people shopping is echoing both visually and auditorily (adverb). it is bombarding and agitating her neurological system. it happens to me too.
i wear earplugs but headphones are prolly better for your daughter. big enough to enclose her ears without touching the ear flesh preferably. (touch sensitivity) sound reducing are awesome!
there are special ergonomically shaped glasses that negate the fluorescent shudder effect as well. pink safety glasses are good for me. trial and error though.
i am sensory impaired. language impaired. i look before i listen. if you turn off the audio from this video. she is looking at the lights, its quite common with autistics. i believe.
forgive me if i have said too much too quickly and with too little introduction but i hope it helps
    allison : )

Britanee Lilly haha, Im west coast as well, (Seattle), and whenever they tell Abby to throw plastic in the garbage, I’m like “Whaaa?” Lol. They don’t recycle in Florida?

Even in the U.K. we’ve got to work out where in the heeeeck which thing goes where... last time I went out to eat was with another wheelchair user and add in Asperger with BPD and well... I nearly cried at the end of the eating

I thought the same thing, but not all fast food places recycle in Canada. Also people don't sort garbage properly so I am sure most goes to landfill.

Florida probably isn't too big on recycling. I'm from northern California I'm 33 we've been recycling EVERYTHING all my life, LITERALLY EVERYONE DOES! I lived in Oklahoma City area for a few years recently and I was shocked almost everything gets tossed in the trash. Very little gets recycled in Oklahoma.

We have had issues at that same store and I never thought about lighting. They have the same type of lighting in B's new classroom this year and the school said she has been refusing to go in there; it all makes sense now. Thank you! I am going to add that extension to my browser right now.

You can have it put in their IEP to use other bulbs or even a tinted cover if it is something that affects your child's learning. Made a huge difference with all the children in my sons special education class

I agree with Cilla, it is cue-pon. Sorry Asa, I think you lost this one. But that's okay, I'm sure you are absolutely right about many other things. This was a cool video. Thanks for sharing the info about the RetailMeNot browser extension. I'm not a big shopper, I am retired and don't have need for a lot of stuff anymore, but it could come in handy. Abbie did such a good job with sensory overload, you must be so pleased.
How about an update on your family. Thankfully, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm but she is still packing punch and doing a lot of damage. Hope all is well with your parents.
