*Key points I learnt from this:*
    - Do what interests you without thinking of how it will be beneficial in future (you can't connect the dots looking forward)
    - Contributing selflessly will lead to wonderful results you can't even imagine of
    - Being a great leader come with being a great joiner, join the people who are better than you as it helps you level up too
    - And the most important: Video tape your important moments in life so you can show them 10 years later when you are running a RUclips channel ❤️😂

0:34 - How I got into YC: Give first
4:40 - To be a leader, first learn to be a good joiner
    5:18 - Give first (3 steps)
    - 1. Develop great skills
    - 2. Find and follow great people
    - 3. Reap the rewards: Smart people!

"Give first and you'll get back a multiple of what you give" -- I love this line, Garry. It's spot on. Being value-driven in copy, sales, etc. was the big differentiator for us when we were just starting out and scaling to those first few million in ARR.
More recently I've heard of allocating 5 minutes of time to give value via cold-email, and I tried it out for just a week -- I was pleasantly surprised by the receptiveness of others and in the process met some cool people.

Damn, the photographer who became a venture capitalist. Your story would make a great movie. It's so inspiring. I like what you said about not finding a mentor. I so begged for one at a startup I was at, but glad I bare knuckled through it to go from intern to fulltime.

Just yesterday a junior of mine from college was asking me how to find mentors post-college. I found it difficult to articulate how I found out mine. But your video now made me realize that actually all of my mentors (those who mentored me with great empathy, were genuinely non-judgemental and always available to help) were found using these same methods.
Such a marvelous way you convey your thoughts Garry. Just love your videos.

"To be a leader, first learn to be a good joiner" - For me, that's the key insight.
You are right, it's all about learning, about soaking up that knowledge, about building you, and to do that, you got to start humble.
    Thanks for sharing, Garry.

For the longest time I've been looking for people I can follow/learn from who are genuinely focused on creating or building things that provide value for people in terms of opportunity, education, equality, and safety through social collaboration. It's easy to just create a service and charge somebody for the trouble, but doing that always ends up compromising the (bigger) potential value of the service. I've learned that having this kind of goal never works well with a short-term plan, it has to be at least a ten-year strategy towards sustainability and there's not a lot of people who talk about this kind of long-range entrepreneurship.

    Great for motivation!
I come from a math/stats consulting background that has built some patterns in my brain, so some of these videos give me conflicting feelings. I have the tendency to meet flashy production, moral-driven stories, and fast generalizations with skepticism. We do not know, for example that joining a startup makes one more likely to be successful in their own venture later on. It would make perfect sense, but what's the empirical evidence for this? Also, the channel gives you an interest to squeeze out general advice from specific situations where there might be none. The simple fact that you were at Stanford makes the odds dramatically different for you than for your RUclips audience. In addition, investors tend to become mentors because they stake a financial interest in you, which can be independent of moral reciprocity. And I don't see how one can be expected to trust in serendipity. Especially when helping others isn't actually free. It costs time, and aren't successful entrepreneurs always telling us that time is the most precious resource one has? So I find the value proposition somewhat dubious.
On the other hand, while this story is an anecdote, I believe that the intuition is correct and that the story is somewhat inspiring and motivating. And frankly, the worldview of helping others simply because you can, I think that's a great message to spread

Curious, have you ever been starstruck? like.. "man, when I get older I want to be like him/her!" Not as a teenager but when you were in your late 20's or 30's.. after some accomplishments under your belt. What was it like and what did you do about it?

    • @GarryTan

Haha yes it’s easy to fall into. As I have gotten to know some of the people I was star struck about I now realize they are human beings and it makes it overall better if I keep that in mind. I think nobody likes to be treated as an idea. We like being treated like fellow human beings.

I see what you’re saying but taking pics was totally unrelated to your product or to YC so not sure why it helped you stand out.
Replace YC with any other job application and you’ll see how bizarre this may sound: “candidate X got picked for a PM interview because she made a collage of the interviewer’s conference appearances”...how can that be a meritocracy?
Not putting this on you, I’m just bummed that flattery works on YC that has the pretense of being a meritocracy. 🤷‍♂️

Hey Garry, there is this startup I am interested in joining, and I even offered to work for free because I love their mission, but I have yet to receive anything back. In your opinion, is it a good idea to make an in person visit and express my interest?

    • @aman9267
      @aman9267 3 года назад +1

      Join them.
      Work for free.
However, set a timeline for doing it for free (max 2, 3 months).
And if you have any expectations from the company (which you should have - like equity or a full time position or both), ask / sort that out before joining them.
P.S. I've faced somewhat similar situation. And it's just my advice. So, take it with a pinch of salt 😅
