It's also the darkest book in the series. (My opinion) It deals with possession. there is all that Ginny went through. The only time in the series it was worse to be at Hogwarts was. in book 7. when Voldemort took over.

Chambers of secrets is my second favorite book primarily because it sets up so much about horcruxes and Tom riddle and learning about the gryffindor sword that is all very vital to the plot for the final book which is really cool to see come together 5 books later. I also really enjoy it bc Dobby is introduced and this is the only horcruxe Harry destroys besides the one inside himself

I initially agreed with you on the portkey in goblet of fire, but I think it was to make Harry’s death (if all went as planned) look like a triwizard tournament casualty vs if Harry got transported to the graveyard from a portkey in Madeye’s office randomly that would seem highly suspicious.

    • @dannylagangonzalez6832

Exactly like it would have been so obvious that Harry went missing, and if he escaped or was rescued he'd say what happened straight away, like I dunno how people even think this is a valid point.

Currently reading OOTP, and I am not particularly big fan of certain parts like Harry overthinking for three pages why he can see thestrals or the grawp description part was really long. The subplot with Cho could have been done better cause it felt dragged out and rushed at the same time. Also Ron constantly wanting to leave Quidditch was not exciting.
However, Sirius being on edge because of being confined to his place, Harry being an angry/temperamental teen, Umbridge, the DA meetings, any scene with Dumbledore, Fred and George just wrecking havoc, the dreams and occlumency with snape, st mungos and neville, breaking in the ministry and the breakdown harry had against Dumbledore in the end were all written beautifully.
For me the highs outweigh the lows by a lot so I would have put it in Low A/High B.

1: Goblet of fire (the whole Voldemort coming back is 🤌)
2: Chamber of secrets (idc if it’s random but I love myself a mystery)
3: Half blood prince (I love Ginny and Harry’s chemistry in the book and Draco being a death eater)
4: Sorcerers stone (my comfort book)
5: Order of the phoenix (just slow and excessively long)
6: Prisoner of Azkaban (idk I find it incredibly boring but I really love Lupin)

Time element aspect of #3 POA was very frustrating and so poorly thought through (bless JK Rowling, but she should never have tried to incorporate time travel in to the universe).
#5 OOTP was definitely the draggiest book. I actually ended up hating Cho for no reason
And absolutely - when #7 came out I remember being so excited to read it. No other book has had that effect on me since

Order of the Phoenix has forever been my very favorite through my lifetime. However, I’m on a reread of the series, currently on Half Blood Prince. It’s been 10+ years since (I am about to be 33) and rereading them has definitely changed my view on them a lot and my order has changed. Waiting until finishing to sit down and rate them myself. I enjoyed Philosophers Stone SO much this reread. Chamber of Secrets was harder for me to get through but I attribute that to basically having it memorized.
Your list is great, but all the slow parts you mention about OotP are all things I really enjoyed! 😂 Great video.

Having just reread the series for the first time since reading each book when they came out, I was also surprised at how much I enjoyed most of the early books especially philosophers stone/sorcerers stone. The sense of humor stood out to me especially with the dursleys. I forgot how funny they could be at times. The later books are great obviously but they lose a bit of that sense of humor

    • @JordanStar7

@@JJ_5289 absolutely yes! Rereading Philosophers Stone was an absolute treat me for me. I enjoyed it and was so hooked immediately which I didn’t expect with the first book. When I was younger I obviously enjoyed them but I thought they were too childish in my late teens. As an adult I really latched. Rereading Deathly Hallows took me a lot longer to get through cause I almost dreaded what I knew was going to happen. Such a great series.

7:13 I get what your saying but interestingly if Barty just HANDED Harry the portkey for their plan that would raise immense suspicion and Voldemort wouldn’t have the upper hand of being hidden from the wizarding world, in his new born weakness the wizarding world might realize more quickly he indeed had returned and stamp him out. It was integral to the plan that Harry be transported during the tournament so it could be a mysterious coverup.

It's funny, I completely agree with all your complaints about OoTP, it IS too long by about 200 pages, drags in parts (coughGrawpcough), gets repetitive etc... but in the end, I don't care, it's still my fav as it has the highest highs of the series.
Seeing Harry go through his turbulent teen year and the whole wizarding world in political turmoil is just really engrossing, and the emotional stakes are so high. Is there a better written scene in the series than them meeting Neville in St. Mungo's? A more hateable villain than Umbridge? Better comedy than McGonagall sparring with Umbridge? A better action climax than the Ministry? A more emotional denouement than The Lost Prophecy? It's a beautifully written, messy character study that warts and all is a high point of the series.

Pretty solid list but as someone who might give a bit too much credit to the goblet of fire, i think that harry and ron's separation fills a role. For 3 years it's been harry this and harry that and not to mention Ron being in the shadow of his brothers for his whole life. I honestly find it reasonable but again it might be bias. I love the world building, the tonal shift, and the exciting and new action plots

Goblet of Fire is my favorite. To me, that opened up the series to the wider Wizarding World, the Ministry of Magic, and even foreign wizards. And some of the adult subplots were so interesting, like the Crouch tragedy, Bagman, and Bertha Jorkins. Its also so exciting and I love the Moody twist at the end. OOTP is arguably my least favorite. Its just too much of repetitive moody Harry though the climax is amazing. Its the book that needed serious editing. I like HBP for the reasons that others don't. I like that it reminds us that these main characters are hormonal teenagers. And again, the climax is amazing. DH is awesome. I like how Hermione and Ron come in front and center along with Harry. The last several chapters are ridiculously amazing. The first three books have to be judged differently because they are a different target demographic. I still love the characters that are introduced. But they are overall down there towards the bottom, maybe just above OOTP. I still love them all, but GOF, HBP, and DH are my favorites.

    A+
1 - Goblet of Fire: The central junction point of the whole story. It really expands the world. Perfectly rounded, setting up a lot of threads that come together and pay off in the end. That graveyard-confrontation is the absolute highlight in all of HP, the peripeteia. The undisputed masterpiece in the series.
    A
2 - Half-Blood Prince: Might be #1 if it was just the Dumbledore/Harry parts about Voldemort's past, the cave-scene is terrific, and it’s a good setup for the final novel, but then it fills up quite a bit of running time with the teen-romance stuff - Hinny sucks and I will die on that hill!
3 - Philosopher’s Stone: Tbh, I don’t enjoy it as much as some of the others, but objectively speaking this was such a masterful introduction to the world and perfectly laid the groundwork for everything that was to come while being a roundly written, self-contained story in its own right. (I want to like it a bit more than I do).
    A-
4 - Order of the Phoenix: In the grand scheme of things, you could skip quite a bit of it, but I kind of like it as a ‘moments taken from Harry’s life’ sort of book, and find myself randomly flicking through this one more than some of the other novels.
B (5-7 keep shifting around for me)
5 - Deathly Hallows: It’s really hard to wrap things up and in my heart of hearts I never wanted this series to end. While I agree it has pacing issues, I actually prefer the first half, peaking in the real highlight of Malfoy Manor, the way everything suddenly comes together and resolves itself in the last 24 hours is too contrived for my taste. I can ignore epilogue in my headcanon.
6 - Prisoner of Azkaban: It lacks in plot as such and while the Dementors are a great concept, Sirius and especially Pettigrew make for weak antagonists after Voldemort. The time turner thing is a bit dumb. Having said that, for being purely talk, the climax in the Shrieking Shack is quite gripping (as random as the plot twist is - it probably comes down to Lupin being so likeable). It also works as a ‘moments from Harry’s life’ novel, even if it’s mostly Quidditch.
7 - Chamber of Secrets: Similar to PoA, this is a bit of a filler book with not too much plot. Still, it expands the world, going into Hogwarts’ and Voldemort’s past and the mystery around the Chamber is really gripping and scared the sh*t out of me as a kid. Plus, Lockhart is the most hilarious character in all of the series.

I found Order of the Phoenix to be amazing on the first couple reads.
But on the countless re-reads since, it’s one of the tougher ones to get through.
    Length is one issue.
But Dumbledore’s refusal to communicate with Harry and the whole world not believing Harry have become very tedious plot devices to witness. Which all lead to Harry constantly having extreme emotional blow-ups at everybody. And tho this is obviously understandable given the situation, it doesn’t mean it’s enjoyable to read him yell at someone about the same thing for the 20th time.
Still a good book tho, with everything else it offers.

Overall it was refreshing to see a video posted regarding the books. Having said that I don't see a point in ranking the books. Many of the points given seemed to me a matter of taste. For example I was not so fond of the goblet of Fire but my oldest daughter really liked it and she found the next book boring where as I really liked the Order of the Phoenix. The idea that it was impossible to disqualify Harry from the tournament seemed bogus. Things can go wrong. One can't have no way to overrule the Goblet. Manual override is always essential. I also, would put the Chamber of Secrets as my least favourite as I could not follow thought process of JK Rowling had with regard to having the basilisk in the plumbing. I just could not imagine plumbing big enough for the monster.

    My rankings:
    1. Half Blood Prince. Agree with all points here. Perhaps the most twisty of all of them. A+
    2. Philosopher/Sorcerer Stone. OG gets a lot of credit. A children’s classic. A+
    3. Deathly Hallows. Great way to end it. A
    4. Order of the Phoenix. Bloated yes, but crazy awesome world building, plus villainy with Umbridge. B
    5. Chamber of Secrets. Continued the goodness of the original, as all good sequels do. B
    6. Goblet of Fire. I read this after it cam out in 2000-but I was on a four book binge at the time, only having gotten into the series the Year before since my nieces and nephews were reading them. I think it was a bit of HP burnout, but the lengthy intro, that made me put this one down half-way through, finishing it up when OotP came out. B
    7. Prisoner of Azkaban. Good stuff; just not a fan of time travel plots. C
All the books are great and I recommended them to all my children (aged 12-25) with my youngest just finishing up the 7th this Christmas. So, even though I rank them, I still all of them. JK Rowling did humanity a great work, here.

Imagine if they’d just enchanted the Marauder’s Map to be the Portkey. Trying to lead Harry to his death with something his dad helped create seems more efficient and evil. Still, I’m willing to overlook all of that because the Triwizard Tournament is neat and great worldbuilding-something a lot of Harry Potter contemporaries struggled with IMO.

I think the book 5 is pretty bad. The movies made it far more better.
The book is really long, there are literally 2 chapters on the same topic and Rowling just describes the house and all.
I was let down by the way Rowling portrayed these characters like Sirius Black, Harry's friends, etc. In the films, Sirius hugged Harry and comforted him when he met him. But in the books, there wasn't even a grin on his face when he met him. He said that getting your soul sucked up by dementors is better than getting locked up! Imagine this! He literally said that Harry was lucky in the books. But the movies did him justice. A man who went to Hogwarts, risking his life, just to see Harry fly! And a man travelling while being on the run and getting put a thousand galleon over his head just because of Harry! Imagine this. Of course, Rowling knows better but this left me unsatisfied.

  • @slightexag
    @slightexag Год назад +1

Half Blood Prince is the best. Lore, backstory, the most realistic teen boy writing of the series. None of the pacing issues of the longer books. The lows of Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows really hinder the rankings there. I still don't think Ron's leaving H&H midway through Deathly Hallows makes any sense with his character even under the influence of the locket. Their year long wandering and then stumbling upon what they need is really bad plotting and pacing; the drama seems so forced.
It goes to show how important Hogwarts was as a character that the book only really becomes good once they return. With all the time they had to think over things, especially what Harry saw in the Pensieves, it seems hard to believe they would do so little. The drama is high but it's based on the logic being low. I guess it makes sense the MCs are in Gryffindor. The desolation and need for the characters to struggle and fail without mentorship is so protracted that the book is outright boring. Chamber of Secrets has deus ex machina, but i don't really think much changes when it comes to them stumbling upon answers in DHs (ex. the doe patronus). I appreciate the world building so much more in the early books after having read the latter books because the wizarding world really starts to feel empty/scarce with so little of the book occurring within the usual setpieces. I think about 65% of Deathly Hallows is mediocre to below average, in terms of pace, enjoyment, and writing. It really comes across like JK was stumbling to figure out how they would stumble upon the answers and so just had them sitting in a tent ruminating and then screwing up for 8 months; it almost seemed like she was just waiting for the seasons to change and Tonks' baby to be delivered. The highs of the end are good, but there's so little of what made the early books good until the doe patronus scene.
    My ranking would be:
    Sorcerer's Stone: B
    Chamber of Secrets: B-
    Prisoner: A
    Goblet: B+
    Order: C+
    Prince: A+
    Hallows: C-
