    This was originally recorded in 1961 by the Shirelles and made the Top Ten. The Beatles (with an emotional John on lead) covered this memorably on one of their early albums. They loved performing girl group songs. This groovy Smith cover from 1969 was a #5 hit.

      The versatility of the songwriting of Burt Bacharach and Hal David! Their songs worked for pop, rock, soul/R&B, country, and even jazz. This is just about the most rocking version of a Bacharach-David tune I can recall.

      A format that might work is to react to all three versions in one day of reactions: The Shirelles, the early Beatles cover, and this one. Three very different styles, but the song works (props to Bacharach and David).

    • @keithwarrington2430
      @keithwarrington2430 4 месяца назад

      disagree completely, this loses the emphasis of the song on the title line dispite having a nice late sixties hippy groove. Shirley sings the song as intended without over indulging for the sake of effect, making the Shirelles version work better except for the crap organ solo.

    • @yoyodynepropulsionsystems
      @yoyodynepropulsionsystems 4 месяца назад +1

      @@keithwarrington2430 "For the sake of effect" completely diminishes the power and bluesy tone that Gayle McCormick sang with. Smith was a rock group that adapted this song to their way of performing. The Shirelles were a pop group who sang the song in that late 50s/very early 60s style that so many girl groups had. I like each version for different reasons. Denigrating the talents of one singer does not elevate the talents of another.

      I do love the original version by The Shirelles. Before I even heard that version, being a Beatles fan from the '60s, I heard it by The Fab Four first and I liked that version as well. In spite of having a sore throat, John Lennon does a pretty good vocal delivery. But this version is a powerhouse! One thing that all great bands do is make a song their own, and they certainly did that here. Heart should have covered this version, I can hear Ann Wilson belting this out!

    As you viewers will tell you, this Burt Bachrach-written song was one of the Shirelles great hits in 1961 and then was covered by the Beatles in 1963 and was on their album Introducing the Beatles released in the U.S. in early '64 when Beatlemania "exploded". The Shirelles' version was so perfect that the Beatles did it exactly the same, note for note. You've heard the Shirelles once but you should hear more of their great classic hits.

    RIP Gayle McCormick (1948-2016) The former lead singer for the rock band Smith, who's biggest hit in 1969 was a cover of Burt Bacharach's "Baby It's You", which hit #5. Smith had 2 more entries on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1970; "Take A Look Around" (#43) and "What Am I Gonna Do" (#73). And even bubbled under at #101 with "Comin' Back To Me (Ooh Baby). Smith broke up in 1971 and McCormick went on to a solo career. Her first solo song "Gonna Be Alright Now" went to # 84 (Hot 100) & at # 20 (Adult Contemporary) in August of 1971. Her first Hot 100 entry, "It's A Cryin' Shame", missed the Top 40 in 1971, peaking at #44 (Here's a video of it: ruclips.net/video/TRkvhoduIxI/видео.html) Her next entry in 1972, a cover of The Miracles' "You Really Got A Hold On Me", fared no better, getting as high as #98. McCormick's version has a soul/blues infusion that deserved a better chart fate. In 1973, McCormick married and relocated to Hawaii. Her last song was "Coming In, Out Of The Rain" that went to # 46 (Adult Contemporary) on Shady Brook Records (released only as a 45 single) in October of 1975 & that was her last swan song. She eventulally retired to suburban Saint Louis where she passed away in 2016.

    "Parachute Pants" were an early-mid. '80s trend.
    They were colored (often brightly so) pants, made out of nylon (a material used for parachutes, as well - but the pant material was rarely (if EVER) "parachute nylon" (whatever that aggregate of materials is actually composed of, anyway!).
    Some idjit yungins MAY have started calling those oversized garbage bag pants that M.C. Hammer appeared in, in the late '80s/verge of the '90s the same (or a similar) thing.
    ...but: OFFICIALLY that was NEVER the name.
    Some peeps MAY have used that as a way to refer to them because they looked "big & wide" (as an open parachute does)
    ...but: ACTUAL "Parachute Pants" were relatively TIGHT and often had "cargo"-type pockets (or at least zippered pockets), on the thigh/leg.
    THAT is what they were (and anyone who says different: either: is too young to know ...or lived in the wrong place (where they used such a name, incorrectly, for ANOTHER thing!😡🤬👎)!

      "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)"
      [A classic song by the LEGENDARY Allen Toussaint!
      First released by ...I believe it was a singer named Ernie Kador (but I think he had a stage-name. ...I forget the deets. (Apologies).🤷)
      Gayle McCormick was the second to release it [and she kills it all up and down the planet!🔥🔥🔥🔥].
      The song was, later, covered by: Rufus (the band), as well [with Chaka Khan singing lead].🔥🔥 ].
      "Take Me Back"
      and
      "Near You""
      [cuts 1 & 2 on the album] are, also" undeniable! 🔥🤘🤘
      ...But it's nearly impossible to "go wrong" with Gayle McCormick. ❤❤‍🔥❤‍🔥😍

    WOW so miss Gayle McCormick. What a wonderful voice. Gone to soon. Gayle had a solo tune "It's a Cryin' Shame" that received some national airplay. Her cover of the Leon Russel / Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett song "Superstar" is quite good.

    Damn ! Gayle didn't get the coverage and media support just like Janis Joplin ! Damn , what an emotional delivery it was. Guys please check out "What am I gonna do" from Gayle McCormick ! Please do it.

    Great tune! Great cover!! Great voice! She was definitely someone’s idea to cash in on the Janis style in ‘69.

    I know, eventually, y'all come to my favs...and this is one of my all time. Such a great bump n grind groove...and the vocals. Remake of a one of those weepy girl songs of the early sixties but turn around with a lot of soul mixed in. Back in the day, id ask my mom to turn it up while riding in her Oldsmobile

    Wow, I was so addicted to this song when I first heard it. This one got past me for decades. I didn't discover it until 2002. It became my all-time favorite song, until Evanescence finally took over in 2006 with "My Immortal.". That was my #1 for several years. I take this stuff seriously. 😁

    Great reaction and pick! I really liked the sound of this when it came out way back when. I think Jay was referring not only to bell-bottom pants, but to the elephant bells. Extra cloth below the knees really flared them out.

    Yeeesss!!! Yay!! I have loved this song for so long and her voice is so incredibly strong but I had never even heard of them until this showed up on a movie soundtrack (Deathproof) and I couldn’t believe I had never heard it before. Meaning, I can’t believe this isn’t a staple song you play for your children to be like “This is how you do it!” Ugh. So good. ❤❤❤❤❤

    As many have let you know already this singer is Gayle McCormick. Smith wasn't around long and she did have a bit of a solo career. I heard the original version by the Shirelles and the Beatles cover when I was little and just starting to listen to music. Then this version came along and blew me away. What a voice. There are many versions since then, and I love the Shirelles and Beatles ones, but this one is my favorite.
