Ren struggled (I think he still does) with suicide thoughts, when he had been sick for a year, he told his mother he couldn't do another year, shortly after that Joe died, when Ren saw what that did to the people in Joe's life, he decided he had to wait for his illness to kill him, because he couldn't put his mother and other people through that. That makes the lyrics in the end of this sing really fall into perspective.
Once you start having those thoughts, they never leave you, when you learn to accept that it does not mean you are broken, you learn to live with them & get by day to day, but they are always there. 💐
Ren raised money for the RNLI (Royal Navy Lifeboat Institution), the volunteer agency that led the search for Joe. He went back to Wales for the first time in years and visited Joe’s parents. He played “For Joe” for them before the official release. Joe’s mom gave him a huge hug. And Ren also gave Joe’s parents a portion of the proceeds from the Freckled Angels album. I believe that trip to Wales gave him a bit of closure and helped him heal.

His friend Callum had drowned two months prior to this recording and Ren was in too much pain from Joe's death to deal with Callum's. At this time, Ren had been bitten by the tick (2009) and was deep in health problems while trying to make the record with Sony and going to these industry gigs to be seen by higher-ups in the nusic business. This was recorded at one of these events, I believe. I am so sorry for your friend's death. Thank you for sharing and reacting to both songs.

Old age, accident, disease, impulsive action, self-chosen decision. I’m old enough now to be profoundly aware of my own mortality. What I’ve eased into is that death isn’t a closure. It’s a process. We who are still in the realm of living can learn to be in relationship with death and with our ancestors as part of the larger cycling whole. We keep memory open, keep the door open not closed on death and on our loved ones who have already moved through. .

I also suspect he was nervous, relatively new to performing for audiences, and unmedicated for his ADHD at the time of this performance. There's definitely some hyperactivity happening. Source: I also have ADHD. 😂
He was sick then. Part of the sweetness in his voice is being weak. My favorite Baby Ren songs are Crutch and Pocket full of Pain. Most Baby Ren songs are REALLY hard to watch because he was at his sickest.
It's definitely worth listening to the studio album version of Freckled Angels... the live version is a little out of pace... 1. Ren was still early on, he was 20 iirc at the time, 4 years after he fell ill... 2. And as a live version less than a year after Joe passed Ren was laying his soul bare, and so he was rushing through obviously trying to keep the emotions at bay. In spite of him rushing through this performance, live Ren is definitely the best Ren, but studio Ren is always awesome too.
