Thank you for your coverage of our beautiful home. The RCMP have been behaving horribly towards to the people who are just trying to protect trees on indigenous territories. The lack of respect for this precious land and the people who have been looking after it for tens of thousands of years, is unacceptable.

What about all the trees the 'protesters' cut and dropped across the road to block access? There are two sides to every story, unfortunately Democracy Now will only ever tell you the side they want you to hear.

Thankfully we have First Nations leading this stand against severely detrimental practices by foreign corporations. Seeing that the RCMP are merely corporate henchmen paid with tax payer’s money to protect corporate interests.
To everyone else helping make this stand - my complete and utter respect, if I could I would make my way down there but that’s not an option. I mentioned the First Nations first, mainly because they are the best equipped through experience and coordination planning. As well as in legal matters.

@@omdesigned Weyerhaeuser is the main one here. A few decades ago they bought the McMillan/Bloedel corporation, who had a huge monopoly in the area that is now Weyerhaeuser’s. Unfortunately, extremely hard to boycott them when they supply manufacturers, mainly. Unless someone traces where a manufacturer sources their wood-based materials from, they will likely never know they just bought a product made from Weyerhaeuser wood.

Thank-you for covering this. This situation is a terrible example of short-term thinking for short-term corporate profit. The logging industry is using the Federal police (RCMP) as thugs to intimidate, harass, and remove impediments (protesters) to their bottom line.
It is shameful. As a Canadian, particularly one in BC, I am ashamed that my taxes are being spent on this. "Serve & Protect" is supposed to be about the people, not the profits.

Why does Canada allow logging old growth forests? There is so little old growth forests left in the world and they are spiritually significant places. Isn't there other forests they can log?
You'd think the nation with the Maple Leaf on its bloody flag would be hip to real conservation.
Canada has pretty flexible/loose logging rules. The US has more strict federal and some state rulres on logging and species protection.
What's the use of treaty agreements when industrialists just make up new rules?

Douglas Fir Trees in these ecosystms can grow to be well over 500 years old. Sitka Spruce over 1000, and Western Redcedar (a cypress family tree) over 2000. Whitebark Pine in the subalpine areas, exceeds all these. There are then others I have not mentioned that live hundreds of years at least, including four species of true fir, two larch, another cypress family plant, and a poplar known as Black Cottonwood. However, the bigger problem is the ecosystem itself, and the rights of the indigenous people parallel the needs of ecosystem preservation, so it is in the interest of all humans to help in these preservation efforts. These activities of damage require expansive ignorance and greed to be maintained.
That is the truth, their root systems must be protected, cannot clear cut.
If only a tree could speak. !!
This is a "mother tree" habitat. There are mycelial networks across the island, but this area's section of it has been undisturbed for a very long time. Killing those mother trees will impact the entire valley - probably even then next few over too.

I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice and friendly people. It seems thier police aren't.
I agree with the protesters, the forests should be protected there and everywhere else in the world as well.
I've been a logger myself and we would actually leave the forest better than we found it. We only took trees that were old and dying and those with disease.
If logging is done correctly it actually helps the forest. Unfortunately that's not how most logging companies operate.
We need this to stop. Right now we need all the trees that we can get. Logging companies should be required to have some sort of forest management officer overseeing what they do. That way they'd be helping with our environmental crisis instead of making it worse. They could still make a profit just not as much as they could when they clear cut.
I'm not really into government interference most of the time but when it's to stop polluting and environmental damage I'm all for it.
You should read more Canadian politics...and you will discover we have All the same problems and conflicts as the USA around environmental racism. Canada has historically treated its Indigenous people poorly, as 3rd Class citizen. In 2021, these indigenous Canadians are still fighting to get clean drinking water and amenities.
Canada is not immune to the systemic oppression of voices who stand up against tyranny. There are folks who have been working diligently to help us raise our voices and have been willing to use civil disobedience. We have been blinded by propaganda for years just as many around the world. I for one would like to see us commit to working with our indigenous people to make it possible to save what we can.

Hello. I became a woodworker 10 years ago. I prefer to always use solid wood and not manufactured with all its weakness and harmful chemicals. But people like me can use really any wood that was safely harvested. We are versatile. Most of the large scale logging is supporting growth, expansion, and manufactured products that are for billionaire class only. For paper too. We have better options. We can use steel in construction and recycled plastic. There are so many ways to build homes today. The people gobbling up resources are obsessed with money.
More proof Tecumseh was right. Indigenous people need to unite. The Mapuche in Chile are facing the exact threats from industry.
Actually, I believe we ALL need to unite. Nothing significant will happen unless huge masses of people rise up in civil disobedience with the goal of removing corporate oligarchs (and their money) from political power. Why everyone? Because this logging issue is just one small corner of a global problem known as ecological overshoot, where humans have exceeded the sustainable carrying capacity of planet earth, by about 73% according to expert Dr. William Rees. We're extracting natural resources and depositing waste into the environment at much faster rates than the natural systems can handle without becoming disastrously unbalanced. WA state here. We're lucky to have influence, knowledge and protection of indigenous people of the natural world & our trees. They know nature on a deep, spiritual & life-based way that corporate life is exact opposite. We've ruined forests with mass cross-cutting and deforestation which is now affecting everyone. Much respect & support to these non-violent protesters & wish them safety. 🙏🏻

If Democracy Now was really about giving you accurate news, they would have reported that there have been over a thousand ARRESTS...not that over a thousand have been arrested. Some of those arrests are the same people, coming back to the site only to be arrested again.

This should be reframed to end clearcut logging. The obvious next step would put our remaining stands of forest under stewardship. Many of our forests, because they're unmanaged, are overcrowded, so part of stewardship would use selection logging that doesn't highgrade (means no old growth taken), so to maintain canopy. This provides a flow of lumber, while strengthening the forests & increasing the forest's bounty of for e.g. foods, medicines, dyes, fibres & latex. Forests stabilize climate & what we face is climate chaos, so reforestation is needed to restore natural fertile conditions, needed for our food production & so food can grow naturally for wildlife. Forests are key to nature's hydrology, that is how they create fresh water in abundance. Reforest to the coasts prevents carbon from running off into the ocean, so preventing further destructive acidification. This makes reforestation one of the best things we can do to heal the oceans. Please consider, for posterity as well as saving our own asses.

Unfortunately, there are many who seem to navigate their lives purely on emotion, and believe that no trees should be cut down, fully oblivious to the benefits you've listed. And if I remember correctly, 'old growth' trees generally store a lot of carbon, but younger (though still mature) trees are more actively removing carbon from the atmosphere. I'm not saying the old-growth should be cut, just that they're not the only trees helping us out.
@@Dyna78 The value I see in selection logging of the smaller trees is in creating enuf root space to come to full growth while maintaining canopy. Then taking out standing dead for firewood, preferably for the rural elderly & indigent, leaving some already rotted standing for nurse trees. This keeps lumber flowing, strengthens the forest's health, mitigates fire risk, makes the forests more inviting.

This continued razing of old growth forests by multinationals has been going on for decades. (I remember David Suzuki covering protests like these back in the early ‘90s on his program, THE NATURE OF THINGS on the Discovery Channel - and detailing the draconian prison sentences that were being meted on the protestors in those days).
Sadly it will probably continue because the mainstream public will - at most - put in mainstream candidates like Democrats, but never Greens (or the equivalent) into office.
Thus the resistance to this devastation will be too limited to have much of an effect. Current “progressive” policy (as defined by the majority), while better than outright fascism, isn’t anywhere sufficient to stop this travesty.

Theres already enough new growth forests to log. Here in Minneosta there is such little old growth left that there is a park called The lost 40. Its 40 acres of old growth that hasnt been logged
As a 70 plus year old, I'm tired of the excuses the millionaires use while they rape mother earth...Will the cops be so concerned when the last old growth tree is cut down? Hell no!
