Hi stuckat27, the good thing about high quality cases is, that the shells are very easy to drill, you get clean holes and still the shell remains perfectly stable, and in the unlikely case you would be really off with one hole, you can close it again with a rivet! Doesn't look too bad ;-)
Last Saturday I had my cello on my back for over 1 hour. Result: a painful back & sore muscles. Luckily my luthier still had 1 Fiedler backpack kit (& hip belt). I installed the kit by following the directions in the video & by thinking where to drill the holes in the shell (I avoided foam padding and overly curved surfaces for instance). And I used a hot glue gun to glue the rubber pads on the locking nuts. All I need is a set of 2 D rings to attach the hip belt. They were not in the package.
Look at the video. Mounting is easy, all screws inside the case are covered with soft foam pads, so the cello - which is suspended on much higher foam pads anyway - is absolutely secure. If you travel a lot, you will appreciate the superior quality of the Fiedler backpack system. It is designed for "pro" use, and every single part can be replaced.
A word of caution if your trying to install this on a Bam case you should not use a drill. I use a soldering iron to melt the holes through as ABS can crack or split if drilled. I installed it onto a Bam Cassic and it is the same form as the Bam Slim it worked fine I just bent to back to form fit it to the case.
Hi Josh, yes, works fine. If you're in the NY area, see us at the Mondomusica show in the Altman building from March 15th till 17th - there will be a Musilia case with Fiedler backpack system for demo.
had this installed at the factory but still needed to add the straps, music bag, etc, and this honestly in itself required the video above. thank you! I have one piece remaining that looks like a rock stop-- can't figure out where it is supposed to be used, or if it is meant to be a rock stop, which strap would you use it with?
It's the same Fiedler backpack system, but with a hip belt instead of the cushion. This is an option, quite useful if you walk a lot, as the hip belt takes a lot of weight from your shoulders. For biking I recomment the cushion.
Hi Morgan, the Fiedler backpack system will fit the Nova Eclipse case. You can use only either the cushion or the hip belt. Attaching both won't work, as they will be in each other's way.
Hi Linda, we have drilled many BAM cases to mount the Fiedler backpack system during the last 15 years - no problem so far. But your solution sounds interesting ... Did you know that the founder of BAM has a Fiedler backpack system mounted on his BAM case as well? When drilling a BAM case, only be careful to drill slowly, otherwise the textile lining could get stuck on the drill.
This particular BAM has not a flat back. The backpack system can be mounted, though, but only in a single position (quite low on the case back), so it doesn't interfere with the shell design.
Hi teamcocono1, a case with straps has been a case without straps before. Then it has been drilled, and the straps have been riveted to the shell. Just the way it's done with the hardware for the Fiedler bacpack system. Of course you have to take out the cello before drilling :-)
Yes, the BAM staff is critical. The mechanical properties of BAM's sandwich shell are different to laminated fiber shells, be it glass fiber or carbon fiber. But in practice there's nothing to worry about.
No, it is not possible to install the backpack system without drilling. For the cello cases of Bogaro & Clemente you can use the original lower D-rings but you have to screw everything else.
Do you have any tips on installing it on a case with thick padding? My thumb is sore trying to push the washer & nut through the layers of padding to reach the screw........
There are several possibilities. You can choose to drill the holes a little bit off the position which is recommended by the drilling template, so you end up in an area which is not padded. On some cases, it is possible to get underneath the padding and insert the washers there. This has the benefit that you won't need to use the foam pads to cover the nuts after you're done. Or you simply cut the lining, if the padding underneath is too thick and there is no other option. The fabric lining can be then stitched up.
Fiedler Cases thank you for making these. I travel around the city quite a bit with my cello on my back and I used to cringe thinking of how sore my back and shoulders would be afterwards. with this I went from a 😞 to a 😐
Hello fiedlercases, Just wondering about your suggestions on where to have the fiedler backpack installed if I'm not comfortable doing it myself (in the NYC area).
Hi Alexandra, please contact our US distributor Nova Strings (www.novastrings.com), they will be happy to direct you to a shop in NY who can do the mounting for you. For specific questions regarding the compatibility of our backpack system with your case, please contact us directly.
Unfortunately not. The Artonus case has a styrofoam shell, which is not stable enough. Maybe we could do something for you in our Berlin workshop, though ... :-)
Hi, we offer the mounting as a service in our shop in Berlin. Maybe you can find a violin shop who are willing to do it for you. I understand perfectly that you are worried to drill into your case - but are you aware that there a dozens of holes already drilled into the shell, to attach all the latches, handles. feet etc.? So, no need to worry - and always remember to take the cello out from the case before drilling :-)

I am just following the recommendations I got from BAM. It is better to be safe than sorry so I follow their advice..

Has anyone tried this on the Gewa Pure cello cases?

Yes it will work on the eclipse
Ah this is my dream cello case it's so beautiful! ive wanted it for so long, but so expensive :|

Which Cello case is featured in the video?
That's an Accord Case, a Standard (2,8 kg) Medium ("regular" or "Strad size")
@@fiedlercases thank you very much for this fast reaponse
What is the backpack system at 5:23?? Is that a different system??
Would it be possible to install it in a Bogaro&Clemente case without further drilling, but using the existent screws?

Does this kit work on a Musilia S2 (carbon fiber)?

Wow, thanks!
Any chance this works with a nova eclipse case? Also can you use the cushion and the hip belt at the same time or is that kind of overkill
Thanks for putting up this video. Do you think I can install this system on my BAM Hightech Slim 2.9? I just bought it..
Thanks.

Also, I travel so much that I think Musilia's backpack kit would be better (it doesn't need a mount as far as I understand).
I live in Kazakhstan. I would never want to assemble the kit myself for fear of damaging the cello. ;(
Dear Olivier,
send us an email (see our URL at the end of the video), we will send you the additional D-rings.
This is too much work and I’m not going to drill any holes into my expensive case.

really don't feel comfortable drilling my multi-thousand dollar cello case...
