I recently revisited Rayman 3 and I was honestly surprised by how brilliant the pacing of this game is. You start out with two classic Rayman-esque levels, then the game hits you with a scary, dark swamp, then you get to explore this world, which introduces new enemy types and added difficulty, while making you feel somehow calm and relaxed because of the music. Then the desert level pretty much traumatizes you, but it's okay, because it's followed by a few platforming levels so you could catch your breath, then gradually it raises the difficulty back again until you reach the tower in the end and it just throws everything at you. The final boss is a perfect culmination of everything you learned in the game. It tests your skills to fight while avoiding attacks, it tests your reactions while you deal with a bigger but slower variation of the boss, then it tests your platforming skills, and then ends it by a completely new challenge which forces you to adapt one last time. It's actually amazing, more modern games should focus on constantly building and relieving tension instead of just throwing waves of enemies at you.
It's sad but Rayman 3 is what I thought I remembered all old games like. It was like a movie, Land Before Time and such. Introduction, curious mysterious world gesturing you to explore, the common happy world, middle adventure of adventure and some comedy, dark hectic moments, the calm relaxation, sudden reality moment, horror and terror and then the big challenge and conclusion before the final climax.
"Then the desert level pretty much traumatizes you" I actually stopped playing it for a pretty long time because dumb kid me couldn't figure out the later rock carrying sections and the knaaren and the infinitely spawning ghosts caused me so much anxiety that I had to switch off the console. Definitely one of the more memorable gaming experiences I've had.
I couldnt find the damn gong gong that I was supposed to shoot the rocket at to lure the knaaren away with. I was left hanging there for literal years. Huge RIP...
I played this game in English because i don't recall there being a Dutch version :P Helped me learn English as a kid though, even if i didn't understand half of what they said.
"Ah...the Land of the Livid Dead, at last. In any case, it’s nice and calm here. And here I was expecting a scary place filled with terrifying ghouls. Silly Globox." "SILLY GLOBOX? SILLY GLOBOX? Who is this bonehead?" XD
As a huge fan of Rayman 3, this is amazing. The Land of the Livid Dead was my favorite location and the music had a huge part to play in that. This is spectacular. Thank you.
It was my favorite location too! It was like a relief and place to breath calmly between The bog of Murk and The Desert of the Knaaren. I loved every inch of it!
I remember this independent “developer” guy was working on an inventive Rayman 4 environment and was really trying to work through it. He showed off his progress on YT, but I have never seen any finished detailing. Sadly he or any other company picked it up again. Rayman 4 would be such a hype today... just like with Crash 4 now
We don't need Rayman 4, we just need something that captures the feeling of it. We already have tons of modern retro-inspired 2D games, and a whole bunch of inventive new Doom and Quake clones, so why not spiritual sequels to old 3D platformers too? Mario continues to expand on the Mario 64 formula in creative ways, and Yooka-Laylee was a flawed modern take on Banjo-Kazooie but it had plenty of good stuff going on as well. Rayman 2 and 3 could absolutely get a worthy sequel.
Ah! Here we are, the Land of the Livid dead, at last! In any case, it's nice and calm here. And here I was expecting a scary place filled with terrifying ghouls. Silly Globox!
As a kid my English skills were very poor, and I think thought he meant he was going to drop kids at the pool, into the pool. Causing a drowning 'accident'.
Everytime I got to this part of the game I remember that I've never wanted to play it through because the music was so great, so I would just chill there and listen to the vibes. Memories
this is one of the best video games ever made and this arrangement is artistically unreachable its as close to perfection as video game sound tracks can be

Look at modern games. Hate what you see. Use that hatred and anger to fuel your wish and will to make games and make games you want. That's what i'm doing even though my mind and body wasn't born for it and i'm terrible at it, but 2 years is at least something

It doesn't matter if its not 3d it still sounds awesome and with enough practice I think one day you will know how to make 3d games. I can't wait until its done. Good luck on completing it. :)
i post little development ppieces on my youtube if you wana see some of the developmental stuff ^^ im currently making a fan boss battle for a character called Lumen from the lenen project to try and test the system!
Both this level always reminds me Brittany (celtic land in the West of France) and its folklore (also the Clearleaf Forest). I think the music plays a huge role in this appreciation, especially the use of an harp
When I first played this game, I thought the Bog of Murk WAS the Land of the Livid Dead. Confused me quite a bit when there were no zombies or dead things, since the name invoked such imagery in my child’s brain. I beat Razoff, and finally manage to enter… …and that opening moment, landing in this beautiful landscape and soundscape, became the moment I properly fell in love with the game.
