- A government review has warned that Britain is becoming more divided as the country grows more diverse.
The report says school children should be taught British values of tolerance and respect, to help bind communities.
Our Correspondent Lisa Holland went to Oldham to examine the scale of the problem.

That part of England was dominated by cotton mills from the industrial revolution until the mid 1980s. Cotton was grown in parts of the British Empire as well as the USA. Then it was imported into England via the great port of Liverpool. The cotton mills then turned the raw cotton into finished goods which were then used in Britain or exported back to the Empire. After World War Two there was a great industrial boom in Britain which caused a labour shortage. The mill owners could not get enough people to work to fill the demand so they turned to labour from the colonies. The so-called "asians", actually British Indians at the time, were imported to England exactly the same as they had been imported into places like Fiji, Malaya and East Africa. Foreign competition killed off the mills.

Seamus O'Flatcap Maybe because her husband is out all day working and providing for his family and she has no one else to teach her. I mean I am sure she would want to learn, why wouldn't she? We don't know what happens behind closed doors or what attempts have been made.
Most, if not all local councils run English as a second language lessons. Oldham has decent public transport services for her to use. Maybe it's a case of she wasn't allowed to mix with people outside of her community so, by going to local shops where they speak Urdu or Punjabi, and only meeting with people who would do likewise, she has been isolated by her family. Or maybe she's happy enough to have left Pakistan for England and can't be bothered integrating.

Look at London's statistics: Between 2001 and 2011 native british population of London declined by 15% falling by 600000. Look up the road at Luton's statistics: British people have gone from making up 65% of the population of the town in 2001 to about 35%, all in less than 20 years (declining by around 50-60 thousand in a town with a population of about 200k btw). This is largely due to british people feeling uncomfortable.

I used to live in a village in West Wales where Welsh was the main language. Not anymore due to large scale immigration from England. I have nothing against English or anybody else (my own dad was Engkish!) but I do understand the feeling of your own town being internationalised and losing its uniqueness and being helpless the stop it.

One doesn't see much diversity in the upper class English culture, parliament, or the House of Lords.
There is a need for More Muslim MPs, local Cllrs, members of the House of Lords. In the London Borough of Newham, majority of Muslims live here but the Mayor of Newham. majority of local Cllrs and MPs are not Muslims. This is one of the reason why Muslim community faces lot of problems. Muslim leaders are in a better position to understand the needs and demands of their community than non-Muslims. A couple of years ago. Newham Mayor removed all the Urdu and other minority newspapers from the local libraries, depriving local minorities to enjoy the beauty of their languages. If there was a Muslim Mayor, he would not take such action. Muslim community needs Masajid, state funded Muslim schools with Muslim teachers, halal meat, sharia laws, Muslim cemeteries, time off on every Friday afternoon to attend a Masjid and tow official religious holidays per year.

When i moved to south korea from scotland i easily integrated into korean culture. In my instance both communities wanted to integrate the problem i see here is that both sides seem hesitant and divided on what to do. #bettertogetherthanapart

In-group preference is normal in humans in general, not just white folks. People segregate themselves for F sakes!
That's not necessarily true. I have white friends who want to live in diverse neighbourhoods. I was rather surprised by that initially. They tend to be well educated professionals though. That's not to say they'd pic somewhere which was predominantly muslim but they prefer somewhere that is not just white.
I'm Chinese and I know there are some Chinese communities around the world outside of China but we generally are fine living in non majority Chinese areas. I mean when my parents first came here they lived with other Chinese and immigrants but once they got money everyone moved out and up. Then they did so again, each time into less ethnic areas. Where I live in the UK there is maybe a couple neighbourhoods with notable numbers of Chinese but those are mostly for old people to access Chinatown for groceries or new immigrants who ultimately move away.
Sometimes racial segregation isn't the factor but class. I know white people that wouldn't dream of leaving their diverse neighbourhood to be with the majority of whites as that is a lower class area. They are quite happy being among rich non whites.

I'm a Muslim guy and I agree about sergration being an issue in places like Oldham my neighbour is a pakistani lady who moved to the UK when she was 12 she's now over 60 and she can't speak a word of English(it's embarrassing) however I know plenty of white people In my neighbourhood who moved out as soon as Muslims started to move in. I’m Greek and my mum came to the UK in 1975. I remember when I was a little boy, my mum spoke fluent English with only a minimal foreign accent. She made the effort to learnt to speak, read and write English as soon as she arrived. All my parents friends are English and my mum considers England her home now.

People shouldn’t come to Britain to set up their own ghettos...in the past, immigrants who came here in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s did choose to integrate whilst still retaining their own preferences. One of the benefits to the UK was diverse FOOD. Thanks for the curries and Chinese food, Italian, Thai, Sushi etc.,, and our fish and chips live alongside each other quite happily. That’s a positive. My wife who lived in Oldham told me about this, and when they merged the schools there was riots in the school yard in and out of school for years. The school had and still does have VERY poor ratings.
I'm an Oldhamer and remember the 70s and 80s when the town was still mainly white - working class people who took pride in their homes, polishing their front steps and looking after the area.
The immigrant communities didn't have this culture and their houses were left scruffy and poorly maintained, with rubbish thrown in the street. Strong cooking smells, poor personal hygiene, traditional dress and often unwillingness to learn English made whites fearful of having Asians as neighbours. As the Asian community grew, whites moved out. That fear has never gone away and has created segregation.
Other communities integrated without problem. Why not the Pakistanis and Bangladeshis?
