Why did Shohei Ohtani (大谷翔平) sign with Dodgers? | Flippin' Bats
• Why did Shohei Ohtani ...
Why do you think Shohei Ohtani signed with Dodgers?
I think you already covered the reasons quite well. Biggest reason is their consistent PS probability and pretty much familiar location and no burden for Ippei to have to relocate etc
If you want the truth, it's because I think he knows little about the city and state he's living in. Now, perhaps he does know and his agent has informed him, but then I'm hesistant to think an agent signing a $700M deal cares too much about where his client is going to have to live for 6 months. He's honestly quite lucky at this point that he doesn't speak English and has a house in Japan and will probably go back there after he's done with baseball. I truthfully don't think he wanted to play for the Dodgers which is why they had to pay such 70M/year on average. I think if he got offered 550M-600M from the Cubs he's in North Chicago. I also think that the Rangers, Braves, Phillies, and countless other teams could have gotten him for less. Then I start to think if I'm in his situation and I get offered a generational amount of wealth to play in a shitty city but with a good team, I'd take it to take care of my family financially. He made a sacrifice to play for a good team and compete for World Series Championships to live in one of the worst cities in America. Now California is beautiful but there's a reason why fewer people have moved to California over the past 5-6 years than in States like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee.
@Jop278 I agree, politics suck here. And I will move one day, however, wouldn't move to suck weather and will always be a Dodger fan! You had a very long post.
@@gregoryk.tanaka4285 ??? That is ridiculous. Ohtani doesn't have a wife and even if that was referring to Ippei that still has nothing to do with it. Ohtani wants to win whether his friend/translator is around or not has nothing to do with that.
He even considered the Dodgers back when he first came over to MLB but had to choose AL because DH option wasn't possible with NL back then
You are right, he doesn’t have a wife. I had accepted a tweet on good faith but the commentator was wrong. Dung was just an acquaintance for a short time.
I don’t blame him…as a Giants fan we’re definitely not ready for a World Series run. Congrats to LA for landing Ohtani!
As a Jays fan: correct decision. No where near angry about it. Dodgers are a great franchise. I'll be in the stands at Rogers when LAD comes.
I like the Blue Jays, wouldn't have been sad if he joined them - but yeah, happy to have him be a Dodger. Thank you!
I haven't been a Jays fan since Anthopoulos left, but I would have been back if they had gotten Shohei. Now, I guess the Dodgers are my team!!
Ohtani chasing the HR record this coming season. At least 60 HRs. He's not pitching, pitchers won't walk him with the Dodgers lineup. Promise you.
For sure not that much competition in NL for home run king
I have a feeling his injury will affect his batting
He had the injury towards the end of the season and was still hitting HRs. He just stopped pitching.
Right before the end of the season he said he wants to win a Triple Crown before he’s done
I'm glad Shohei decided to play for the Dodgers. Ben, thank you for your constant explanation.
so happy for Shohei
Glad that he went to the Dodgers, now he’s gonna even be more marketable and have a chance to win a WS. With his deferred contract Yamamoto is on his way to the Dodgers!!! 50+hr and 100+ribs!!!!
yes! Yamamoto!
History has changed from TrouTani era to BetTani era.
shohei doesn't want Dodgers to struggle to get young players bz of his contract, that's why he advised Dodgers not to pay the full money to him. He is the first player who rejected to receive money 😮. Dodgers now don't need to worry luxuariy tax also enough money to get Yamamoto.
Shohei Ohtani made the most correct decision.
No he made the most boring decision
@@devynlich00 I think so.
Because he has always surprised people with his unexpected decisions, I was thinking that if he chose Toronto, it would be typical of him.
But the ending was too obvious at the end.
@@bighawk56 do you know what would have been a surprise for people if he went to the Rangers
Boaring = winning
@@jackhastings9800 I'm sorry but the Rangers have the better lineup if you really wanted to be part of a dynasty he should have picked Texas
good signing for dodgers now need to sign in solid starting pitcher.
Such an amazing pitcher! No wonder he gets such a high salary 💰👍👍

If you learn the Shurangama Mantra well, becoming one with it, you'll reach the mantra's samadhi, making your recitation uninterrupted like flowing water. This could bring you wealth like America's richest oil magnates for seven lives. But don't learn it just for wealth; seven lives go by quickly. Aim higher, for ultimate Buddhahood and Unsurpassed Proper and Equal Right Enlightenment. True dedication to the mantra transforms you into a high-level Buddha form, like those on the Buddha's crown. - the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua
The doctor who did his surgery is a team Dr of Dodgers. I think it is one of the important reason.
I'm a shohei fan and I know the hate for him just grew 100 fold more
I never want to see your name in my recommendations again. Making that change to enhance my user experience now. GO DODGERS FOREVER.
I was pushing TEX lately because Shohei would get along well with the genious Bochy and Semien-Seager-Shohei blasting lineup seems more attractive than LAD's Betts-Freeman-Shohei.
But the team had spent too much in recent years.
I had no doubt from the beginning that Shohei would choose the Dodgers.
Jays fans here...700 millions and LA....logical decision.
Potential dynasty in L.A.
How much money does Shohei need? When he was at NPB, his mother gave him a stipend of $900 a month to live on and he still did not spend it all. He did not even have a drivers license because he lived at the dorm and just trained, so never even owned a car. I think he will give up some money if the Dodgers try to get a free agent at trade deadline. It's really all about winning for Shohei. I think he wants multiple championships and would give up a lot for that.
Who is wearing #17 now? Or is that number retired with the Dodgers? I wonder if Shohei is going to wear a different number, maybe one of the numbers he wore when he played for Japan.
Afaik shohei doesn't care what number he wears
He is keeping his number. Joe Kelly is giving it to him
Is he able to wear #17 ??
And how about Ippei Mizuhara?
Yes he is. Kelly (the iptcher that used that number) already said he would gladly give it to Ohtani. And I'm sure Ippei is going with him
@@edomarpez1840
I'm glad to hear that.
Thanks for your info.
He went from the Mets to the Yankees 🤣
without Shohei...Angels will now be competing with the A's for the worst in the AL West
Astros can't wait ;)
I'm sure the Astros are waiting to beat their trash can lids 😮
@@jackhastings9800 🤣 I see you are still holding on to that. Yeah the dodge has never cheated 🤣
@darioarteaga8857 the only one holding on to it, the lid is you. I can see you are proud of it!
The midget altuve can’t wait either
@@cyclops9125 And that's the best you could come up with? That explains a lot 🤣
a team on a turrible *DECLINE* since kovid
Shohei’s deeper emotional reason is that his relatively new wife Kamalani Dung signed a 2020 contract as a star pitcher to play for the LA Commotion, which is the Los Angeles team in the National women’s fast-pitch softball league. Plus, she is from Oahu, Hawaii.
Really??
Don't know where you got this rumour of Dung and Shohei, but as of June, Kamalani Dung was still dating musical artist Dillon Pakele.
you are in daydream lol. his marital status is single.
MLB sabotaged the Blue Jays chances of getting Ohtani. They didn't want him to leave the US.
