  • Sometimes it's easy. If it's not the fuse then you may have to be a real electronics wiz to figure it out.

    I agree, Lionel should’ve installed either an automatic breaker or a resettable circuit breaker in those transformers. I have many of them and one of them did stop working. Nice work! Frank😊

    Not really a big surprise that Lionel went with a fuse on the CW80. I believe it's one of their lower cost transformers. I'm not certain, but I don't think they installed circuit breakers on the lower cost transformers in the Postwar Era days. Good idea about replacing the fuse with a circuit breaker! Thanks for sharing this, Jeremy. It's good information to know!

    Still have mine from a set I got back in 04 the only problem is the bad fan screams at you for about a minute till the bearings heat up and it goes quiet. I use my ZW for most operations but break out the cw80 for xmas layouts. It never runs hot with the 3v williams engines but turns into a nuclear power plant with any of the old AC equipment.

      Very interesting with the heat output. Thanks for watching the video & the great comment.

    Nice job, but I was thinking an external fuse holder, and while in there an on/off switch.

      For sure! one of those panel mount holders would work great. A power switch would be a nice addition as well.

    Great video and awsome job. To bad I tossed my CW 80 out after mine did the very same. Great info I ever have another CW80.. my MTH Z400 is my beast currently. Although it now has a faulty power indicator light. Lol

      Thank you very much. I wonder if you could get a light from MTH parts?

    I use a CW80 to power my layout since it is a small layout mine. It may not be the best transformer ever but it’s great for small layouts. Do you agree Jeremy?

    Mine has the opposite problem … 19 volts both circuits all the time. Need to dive in and find source of the problem, likely the proprietary controller device. :-(

    Good morning, watching your videos it is evident that you know.
    I have a very simple set that works only with the source that came out of the box. It is a Lionel Polar Express locomotive that I bought in 2020. Connect everything and leave the train stopped, from one moment to the next on its own the train started moving very quickly, it made two turns, it stopped and from that moment it did not run again, check everything and it only turns on the front light of the locomotive intermittently, it does not work with the remote control. I think it is shorted because the buses went out. I appreciate you telling me how and where I can solve this. thank you . I have a second question, is it necessary to buy the article Lionel Transformer GW-180/180-WATT to protect a possible new train? thanks thanks

      That's a difficult problem. Check the output of the power supply. Check the battery connections on the remote.

    Jeremy, Have you ever seen the fan in one of those early CW 80's? I need to replace one in mine because I did something and poof, it was gone. I was thinking it might be a fuze but the transformer works and supplies adequate power to the track/ train. I'm just looking for what to check next.

    • @TooManyHobbiesJeremy
      @TooManyHobbiesJeremy  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, it was a bear to pull out everything to access the wiring. I'm guessing it's a standard fan but you would have to pull it all out and get some specs of the label and then find something similar.

    Lionel shoulda just put in a breaker from the beginning. So they cheaped out on that. So if a train derails and shorts, blows fuse! Now you gotta take it to a shop for repair. Otherwise not a bad looking power supply inside

      Thanks for the comment. Here's the weird thing - the fuse is on the input side of the control circuitry. Between the control circuit and power supply transformer. A breaker should ideally be on the output of the control circuitry. An interesting design. I know there is an updated version of this transformer. It would be fun to compare the two.

    Most will tell you not to run any MTH product with a CW-80...

      After observing how the 1st generation CW-80 operates - I can certainly understand that. Thanks for watching the video.

    Hi Jeremy...another great learning video. All my transformers are MTH Z-1000's 100 watt. I notice the button sequence is different on that Lionel transformer to activate station and passenger sounds. I assumed they were both the same...good to know. I'm waiting for a Lionel pre-order of a Budd car set. I've already purchased their universal remote. Do you think the Z-1000 will be powerful enough to operate the set efficiently ? I'm not savvy on watts and volts but did some research and feel it should be ok. Your thoughts ? Thank you ! 👍

    • @TooManyHobbiesJeremy
      @TooManyHobbiesJeremy  8 месяцев назад +1

      The Z-1000 is good for the Budd set for sure!
      The button sequence on the Lionel transformer is the same. The difference is I was running a proto 1 engine which has a completely different way of accessing functions compared to the proto 2 & 3.
      Thanks for watching the video ❤

    I got one it keep flashing the green light do u know what it could be I thinking a Shortage

    • @TooManyHobbiesJeremy

      Thanks for asking, a short or low supply voltage for the microcontroller will cause that symptom. It may not be possible to fix it. But I would start with checking the capacitors or just straight up replacing them. It depends upon how much work you want to put into it. A lot of people consider the CW80 a disposable unit.

    This generation of the CW80 is one the worst ever made, these are barely worth the plastic housing they are in. The more recent fanless versions are much better.

      There was an update to the electronics and the power output on the newer models is much cleaner. If you look at the older ones on a scope, you'll cringe. Also, the power indicator lamps were changed to a clear lens with a bi-color LED. Green for power on and flashing Red to indicate a short.@@TooManyHobbiesJeremy

      That's great information and makes it easy to tell the differences from the outside. I could tell my postwar Alco FA really didn't appreciate the power output of the 1st gen CW80. Thanks for the info

      0:26 i have a later version of cw 80 and i dont hear a fan noise that others talk about. so after your comment i guess my unit does not have a fan. green light goes to red on some engines and then back to green. underpowered mabey, thinking of adding a brick.

      @@patrickheine5604 Is the color of the lamp a reliable way to tell which version I'm looking at when shopping?
