    TILE .. works with Bluetooth .. won't work the way you may think it does .. you'll need to turn the Tile on .. and then turn on the bluetooth of your phone (your phone will use more energy) ... once your signal is out of range .. the Tile will actively use battery to send out connection requests (lowering time it can be active) .. to gain a reconnection you'd need to be within 9ft. (the bluetooth standard but you can be a bit farther with no electronic pollution the way)

    Hey guys good luck on your hike. Keep giving yourself pack shake downs with the idea your only a few days away from the next town. The more weight you can shave off the more your back will thank you. Solar charging power bank will be dead extra weight…if you can swap that out. Lots of extra in there you’ll find out quickly aren’t necessary. Good picking up the shoes on discount.

      This is the plan... We are newbies so much of that we will be figured out on trail. Can't wait to post the updated pack video!

    The only good raingear i am aware of is the good ol' rain poncho..! Breathable fabrics are not necessary because of the good ventilation, and so both you and your backpack stay 100% dry - which is not what i have heard about Gortex... The Hilleberg Bivanorak is also pretty good in cooler temperatures, but the closed up system is probably not ideal for hot temperatures. I still LOVE my Bivanorak though..! It is both raingear and shelter in 1, and sufficiently compact and lightweight that i would probably bring both this AND my Duplex if i were to go on a longer trip. Im thinking about going on a week or month long bike packing trip when summer comes, and then ill definitely bring both - as well as my 2x 28W solar panels, so i can charge my battery banks somewhat reasonably even in overcast weather. I really hate the idea of sitting at some crowded café for maybe several hours to get a full charge :S

    By PA you'll be down to 1 shirt, 5 pairs of socks, and wearing a bathing suit every day. The solar charger would've been mailed home at Mountain Crossing. You'll definitely dump the sleeping pad for a lighter one well before PA. You two will probably dump the tent for a large tarp and 2 bug bivies around Daleville. Your rain gear will be Frogg Toggs around PA. You will flush the Sawyer 3 times in total and then throw it away in a motel room after you get down from Katahdin. You both will get into the habit of smoking Black and Milds while hiking in New England to keep the mosquitoes and giant flys at bay.

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders  2 года назад

      I'm just happy that in this story we reached Katahdin! I'm sure we will figure all this out on trail. Not sure too many people will appreciate the cigar smoke on trail though, but hey whatever works.

    Change the powerbank and let the extra clothes at home to reduce your weight.
    Maybe the sleepingmat could be changed to a thermarest xlite to save some more weight.
    And let all the luxury items like the soap toothpaste container at home. You wouldn’t miss them but you will hate yourself for all the weight.
    Last month I had a terrible Trip because I bring so many luxury items till I couldn’t hike anymore because of the weight.

    I’d be inclined to say to ditch the solar charger. Of course I don’t have personal experience yet but I’ve heard there typically isn’t enough sunlight to really charge those up enough to make them worth the weight. It would probably be more useful to bring an extra Anker battery pack imo.
    I’d also recommend switching out your Sawyer squeeze reservoirs for something more durable. Those bags that come with the Sawyer squeeze don’t typically last very long. I like my cnoc reservoir!

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders  2 года назад

      I knew this would be a controversial piece of gear! I like to be better safe than sorry, but may be sending this home. My partner already has the cnoc and will be looking into that as well!!

      I actually got the fleece from my time in the army, but was able to find this online:

    Love checking out others set up. I'm bringing my Army polar tec as well but not the zip up . Trust me you wont need that zip up, with the puffy and cold weather sleeping bag, and you wont need the liner and Solar dont work in the woods. Bring one spoon, drop those plastic bottles, drop 1 pair socks. And that deodorant works great to prevent chaffing as well. This is just my input, hike your own hike by all means. I'm wearing my combat boots to start and I'm sure someone will knock me for that. Good luck hope to see ya out there.

    I do most of my filming with the GoPro short stick (actually a knock-off). I find it handles most of the shots I need. It's also easy enough to lash to your backpack strap. I agree with the others about the solar charger - not sure how well that will work for you.

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I believe that's what I have. It's pretty compact which is nice.
      And yes, the masses have indeed spoken. If that's really the biggest thing I have to change, I'm in good shape!

    Nice vid. Good luck on your AT Thru Hike! Not sure, but I’ve heard others from past talk about the inefficiencies of solar battery banks because of lack of consistent access to sunlight. Hey, that’s why it’s called the “green tunnel”. 😉

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders  2 года назад

      This was certainly an experimental piece of gear! and something I may be sending back, we'll see. Thank you!!

  • @EspenFrafalne
    @EspenFrafalne 2 года назад +1

    I actually love the concept of solar panels. Judging from the size of that solar panel, im guessing it is around 3W, and assuming it is 5V, it should give around 0.4A under realistic conditions with good sun... This would charge a 3000mAh phone battery in around 7,5 hours - but you loose about 90% of this in overcast weather, and hanging it off a backpack is generally about as efficient as charging in overcast weather. If you are going northbound it could get substantially better than this when hiking in the open, but in forests with trees shading, i would not expect much charge at all...

    Colin Fletcher said, you must always know where your light is... As a backup light, niteize Innova rechargeable, squeeze, on a shock cord around neck at nite. Yeah, backup, yeah pack my fears. Good luck.

    Good call on getting the NuCore light and saving weight on batteries. Here are a few suggestions: I would not carry a solar panel charger given the "green tunnel' effect in addition to cloudy and rainy days on the AT. There are lighter camp shoes than the TEVAs. Ditch the soap and accept the foul aromas. Use a ziplock baggie for medical items and leave that bag behind. Consider carrying less underware and socks. Those Sawyer water bags will fail within a couple weeks; use a CNOC bag for collecting water and squeeze through the Sawyer filter. Only use the titanium spork, ditch plastic fork and the 2 plastic "siracha bottles". Hope this helps. See you soon. Lazarus

      @hikinghomesteaders  2 года назад +1

      The battery bank is seemingly going to be the first thing I get rid of.. Def gonna look into something smaller. Thanks for the other suggestions too! I will have to see what works and what doesn't work for me. Guess I'll go ahead and order the CNOC though.

    My media mod died on day 8 on trail so I recorded 3 days thinking it was fine. Just a warning to check daily.
    I'd recommend both of you ditching that soap. You're only 3 days away from towns usually so you'll never need that soap.

    Get a kitchen scale, wiegh everything and write it down. Do as much research as you can on what others have taken. Have someone do a gear shakedown for you, different perspectives are helpful. Best way to go lighter is to take less. Good luck and happy trail.
