    I think it is what they had to considering their mistake in allowing him to undercut Oscar. I think if they had boxed Oscar before he still would have won because of track position and the pace that he had shown. and behaving like that would quickly result in a reputation as being driver first, team second...you'd quickly be out of a seat. once you're truly contending for the drivers championship, strategy will favor you. Until then, it's all getting max points for the constructors.drivers can be selfish, but only when it's worth the backlash. Lando disobeying team orders in this instance, would cause more issues than is worth, just for him to have 1 more race win when he looks back on his career. instead, this race can be used as a lesson in decision making , which McLaren desperately need.

    Mclaren have in the past had a race-to-the-1st-corner policy when they had front row lock outs.
    Prost and Senna fell out about it: Coulthard and Hakkinen stuck to it - and Lando said he lost the race there.
    This was the 1st time in forever that they had to implement it, and they did it clumsily, IMO.

      I don’t think the Mclaren swap was as bad as people make out.
      If they’ve previously discussed the 1st out of turn one thing then Piastri should have got preferable strategy but they absolutely had to protect Lando from undercut because he couldn’t drop points to Max and or Hamilton if he got undercut it would have made things much worse than the 1-2 swap around they dealt with.
      And Lando pulling away after the stops is what made it more difficult at the end.
      Lando should have slowed down a little on that lap and they should have pulled each other along until the end

    I think McLaren made the cowards WDC strategic call to pit Lando first planning to use it as a way to have him win with less drama. And then someone pointed out it was going to be Oscars first F1 win and they felt guilty and didn't own their actions. It was never a call that was "covering" Lewis or Max that is a barely plausible excuse they are using as a flattering lie to avoid further pissing off the fans and more importantly both drivers who should rightfully be furious with them.

  • @Middleageman500
    @Middleageman500 2 месяца назад +8

    What we learned is that even before Lando becomes ruthless or whatnot, he needs to prove it first by be the driver leading at turn 1 every time he gets pole. Because that is one of the problems that needs to be addressed. To fail that and then go to the cooldown room and throw jabs at a 7 time world champion is very indicative of how much he still needs to grow as a driver. And McLaren also need to tackle their growing pains as a team. You are no longer a midfielder. Embrace it. They need a more assertive Stella. They screwed up and created the problem by pitting Lando first. That whole radio soap opera should not happen. If the team decides something like that, Stella needs to come to the radio and simply say: do it. Period. Because my question during all that radio chat was: "Who is in charge?"

      I’m torn on this because whilst I do think that Lando was quicker during the final stint, I don’t think he was quick enough to overtake Oscar. Hungary is a difficult track to overtake on as shown by the lack of on track action during this race and previous races there. You usually need to be considerably quicker than the driver in front to overtake so I think that Lando might have found it quite difficult to overtake Oscar. Unless he thought he could stay within DRS range long enough to put pressure on Oscar to make a mistake, I don’t think that would have been the best option for Lando.

  • @mta1864
    @mta1864 2 месяца назад +4

    The disconnect between "team" vs "driver" has always baffled me in F1. I think F1 is the only sport where the two people actually playing the game, the race drivers, are actively encouraged to be ruthless towards each other. This is fine I suppose if you have the clearly superior car like Merc had in the Hamilton/Rosberg days. It's workable when you have a clear number one driver like Max vs. Checo even though Checo clearly suffers. But it makes NO SENSE if you have equal young drivers like Norris vs Piastri. That's why to criticize McLaren for prioritizing team over driver is wrong IMO. McLaren have been down and out for so long that the team as a whole need to relearn how to win. They don't have time for driver squabbles at this point. Maybe when they are dominant again, they can afford to go Prost vs. Senna again. But not now.

    • @mta1864
      @mta1864 2 месяца назад

      As for Lando needing to be ruthless to be world champion like every other world champion seemingly, I think he realizes that the only reason he's beating Max and Red Bull is because he has the better car at the moment. Being selfish now will undermine the car's and the team's development and will make him lose in the long term. It's why Lewis didn't care so much if George won when the Merc was terrible. It wasn't the time to be selfish.

    There was no "controversy" Team orders exist in almost every race. For example, why aren't Sky talking about Lance refusing to give position back to Fernando, this weekend?
    No controversy, just Sky being sensationalist as always.
    Same with Max's Team radio.....All drivers get snappy with their RE, but F1tv and SkyF1 only choose to broadcast Max! Max does go further than most over the radio, but it the broadcasters that create a sensational narrative to propagate views. Liberty are responsible for much this, but you can't really blame them for wanting to attract viewers

Yes, he is not the calmest person, he is not the nicest, whatever, it is what it is, this is who he is, like him, hat3 him, whatever, but they should stop saying bad things about him every time. Also, it's funny to me how they never talk about how Max carries RBR on his sholders for the past months. He is basically fighting alone in the WCC and WDC agains 5-6 other drivers. I agree with KC to an extent of the feeling within the f1 community and understanding why lando ended up ahead
    Thing is though, without the fans there is no f1 so that should be remembered when talking about the feeling within the f1 community
    Fans follow teams of course, but at the end of the day for the fans, it’s all about who wins and who takes the drivers championship
    We want to see a fight for a drivers championship
    We don’t go to our friends and say “did you see McLaren are chasing RB for the constructers championship
    We talk about drivers first and team second
    Lando lost ground in the drivers championship and I bet he feels worse for that rather than doing the right thing for the team
    Sports people want to win
    Yes they need a team to do it but at the end of the day, lando is the only one who can challenge max this year and he’s lost ground and that’s sad
    Oscar is only in the sport a short time and has plenty of time to challenge for a drivers championship
    Lando is there a lot longer and he should of been out first even though Oscar got the better start
    Now Oscar has a new confidence and RB are rubbing their hands as now Oscar will be alot closer to lando and it pretty much seals the drivers championship as now lando doesn’t have the teams full support to push this year
    What a story it would be to overturn the gap to max

    But I don’t think he could defeat Max, or even Lewis, George or Charles in equal/similar cars. He has less wins than Max this year and as many wins this season as the other three. And they’ve had far less opportunities to win in the last twelve months than Norris has.
    Whether it was his mistake and/or the team’s mistake, they’ve lost out on a couple of wins this season that I don’t think would’ve happened as much if Hamilton, Russell or Leclerc were in that car instead of Norris.
    And now you’ve got Piastri, who’s only getting stronger and faster and more consistent. It wouldn’t surprise me if Oscar at some point in the future, becomes the team leader at McLaren.

When the conversation started, Max was coming in FAST until he drove over Lulu's car, so if Lando suddenly lost 6 seconds plus to get Oscar ahead, McLaren could have turned a cast iron one two into a one three. McLaren's current team management is holding them back from winning titles. Despite currently having the fastest car on the grid, their strategic decisions are among the worst. While Andrea Stella has turned around car performance and deserves praise for that, it's time for new leadership on the pit wall.
    Stella’s focus on the team's image over potential points in the drivers' championship is baffling. His attempt to avoid a PR disaster by emotionally manipulating Lando over the radio (since Stella was actually the one telling Lando race engineer what to say on the radio) not only failed but also created an even bigger PR issue and cost crucial championship points for Lando.
    The recent board meeting likely didn’t go well, despite the 1-2 finish. Stella should continue managing the technical side of the team, but McLaren needs someone like Ron Dennis on the pit wall to make the right strategic calls.
