Fr. I'm not even British but the most successful drill artists I see, have great word play and their bars are clever. And the unsuccessful drill artists I see have basic rhyme schemes, basic flows and don't use wordplay
our uk artists have been doing this for time, central cee aint the first hes just the first to do it where no ones complaining about him exposing the slang, cold freestyle though, did his thing on this
I've been listening to UK rap for the past few years putting my boy down with the 🔥🔥🔥🔥 coming out the UK. Don't sleep America, them boys got something to say also! TALK THAT SHIT UK!!
Uk slang is a mix of usa, Caribbean, african and European but largely african and Caribbean from when we opened the doors to Caribbeans and I think Africans to help rebuild the population, country and economy after the world wars
Im from the UK but the US got lyrical geniuses aswell like Nas, Em, Wayne, Kendrick and J cole, Mos Def, Andre 3000, Kanye, Joyner Lucas so big up the US man🇺🇸❤ but I get what you mean in terms of modern US drill artists they cant really compare with UK drill wordplay and flows US drill is more for clubs and partys whereas UK drill is for that and more, UK drill artists actually speak on real shit that go on and have the waviest bars and references not to say US drill artists cant spit fire but the UK is more frequent with those sectors whereas US drill mostly your standard gansta rap pack talking about money, jewellery and shooting opps. Btw personally I say London slang is better its more hood because of the Jamaican origin of the words with a slight addition of muslim words but merged with the strong London accent but US has the smoother more swaggy accent and the slang is more basic and understandable to people even outside the US but both hit hard in rapping though.
Great way to put it, man. I’m from the Midwest in the US so I’ve always been into Chicago drill, and later on New York drill.. but I’ve always felt UK drill hit different. I always knew why but I couldn’t really articulate it well. Your comment sums it up perfectly! I’m hoping that the more UK artists get attention and clout over here, it will push US drill artists to be better. Knives sharpen knives kinda thing
For real. But US is dead compared to glory days. Too commercial. Too clean. Too polished. UK is raw. Creative, genuine and if you’re a record industry creation (ahem..Drake) you get no respect here. Whole world is low-key obsessed with UK street culture right now. US are last ones to recognise but understandable. Used to be nothin but US and everyone else copied. No more tho
@@ScramTekYou’ve got a point, but I’d argue that the reason for the great impact of UK culture when it comes to drill is because it’s a very welcoming melting pot for multiple diasporas. It’s not just necessarily down to what historically native Englishmen are doing or have done. Maybe that’s what the essence of UK culture is or means in current times. But the reason it has a lot of pull, especially with the drill scene, is that it heavily pulls from Jamaican culture, a lot from the rest of the Carribean, Arabic culture, Somalis, Nigerians, Ghanaians. It’s very palatable for Aussie and New Zealand fans, South African fans, and Canadians connect with it heavily etc. You can just tell by the slang and lingo used, some of the beats, or even the ethnicities/origins of the rappers. US drill is very New York or Chicago-centric, and if you’re not from those cities it’s hard to capture a world-wide audience. I for one grew up in the Midwest US. I like Fivio, Pop, Santana, Keef, Sheff, Flock etc. But My parents are African, I’m of African descent, the bars hit harder when it’s lingo you can relate with or people you can relate to. So I prefer Headie, Digga, Loski, Cee etc. Once the US drill scene realizes or accepts that they have to embody more of worldwide culture to their music and develop that connection with fanbases that don’t necessarily live in NYC or Chicago. They’ll definitely put up a much better competition against the UK scene.
@@carl1415 I hear you. And not disagreeing. But the US is so insular. Whether commercial hip-hop/conscious rap/drill/boom-bap etc they all suffer from a lack of awareness of music outside of their scene. Especially foreign music. There’s loads of US talent but they’re getting left behind. Not that it matters much cos the US is always gonna be biggest music market in the world. UK drill was obvs kickstarted by London youth looking stateside and emulating the music/mentality. But UK drill rocketed past US drill long ago. US drill has barely changed. And the changes have come from copying UK. UK hip-hop used to flat-out copy the US in early 90s, even down to UK rappers trying to sound American. Speed Garage came out of Jungle scene. Grime came out of Speed Garage scene. Drill came out of Grime scene. Now, the UK has grown up and copies no one. I think the US has to go through it’s own evolution once they accept and respect foreign artists. Next few years will be interesting, wherever you’re from and whatever you’re into
As someone who closely follows NY Drill the difference is the audience. NY doesn’t reward punchline drill artists with attention. On the contrary they give a pass to bad rappers as long as the sample is lit hence the Bronx Drill scene

I like how he is clearly educated but yet knows hard times. A lot of people don’t realize but old rap isn’t about sounding fire. It’s more about knowing the ghetto, the hard life. We call Tupac and biggie the best rappers because of the things they knew about that only people in the gutter, the trenches knew and went through.
