It never ended, as far as I'm concerned. Fraser is riding forever, because you can't keep horsemen in a cage. Should the angels call, well it's only then, he might pull in the reins.
A wonderful moment,Benton saying goodbye to his Dad one last time,& being allowed a final glimpse of his Mum,magic! Reminds of the dreams I have where I still talk to my Dad.
Its been decades since the last episode, and this is one of my favourite moments of the entire show Not the bit where we find out what the characters did, but the very end where there is an exchange of salutes - its just perfect
This show is magic and seeing it end was painful and sad. Aspeacialy benton, seeing his dad for the last time and his mom for the first time sense he was young, hurts. Memories is all benton, can relie on now of mom and dad. With those memories of the one's we lost can fill that lost void.
I took my mom on a little trip a few days ago and we stopped in a grocery store and as I waited for her and my sister to do some shopping, I noticed some dvds, low and behold, there was season 3 complete set for $2! When I got home, started to watch them, been so long and manage to watch have of them, there were some episodes I manage to miss before.
I watched this show a lot when it was on primetime TV. It's a shame it didn't receive as good ratings as I hoped it would, as there are still lots of eppisodes I have yet to see. You see, they kept changing their minds about what time they wanted to show it. Whenever it would disapear, by the time I found it again, the plot had already progressed quite a few eppisodes. I really hope I can find this show on DVD sometime!
I think this is certainly one of the best endings ever. However can we not get a two hour show? Where they find Franklins Hand and come back to the Civilized world?
This show deserved more than 4 seasons. I know this says series 3 but they combined the last 2 seasons into one series. Mountie On The Bounty was technically the season 3 finale. Anyway, they could have at least made a movie.
Here it is from Stan Rogers' - who wrote it. ruclips.net/video/TVY8LoM47xI/видео.html Here is another version - also very good - an in Polish with a great a cappella arrangement- ruclips.net/video/XboMbs9QChc/видео.html
Searched, clicked and watched KNOWING I would ugly cry. I always ugly cry watching the scene saying goodbye to Fraser Sr and seeing Caroline. And then there is the newer extra helping of feels seeing Buck Frobisher.
@NancyK97 I don't think it was favouritism,or even the fact that Fraser and RayV had been apart for a year or so,or even the fact that Fraser was canonically the only person RayK had. But (as Paul Gross admitted) they were fueling the subtext between Fraser and RayK so I think it was mostly that (I mean, everyone who's old enough probably assumed right away that they were going to end up together and this is as close as they could get while still keeping it subtext)
I have had such fun re-watching this poignant and hilarious series, and watching episodes I had miss. I would change the ending just a bit. Ray and Ray would become the new partnership in Chicago. Returning to the north, Benton is saved by rough and tumble woman mountie and the two would set off on a unknown adventure.
Thanks for the memory , I liked this series but never saw this . We Had a Hunting Dog , a Beagle Named Loco . I swear that Dog was Deaf , he never listened ! He is Buried with a Pant leg and his Hunting collar out side below the Window .
Sometimes I wish they would make a reboot of the series, given the fact that HMS Erebus was found in 2014... or at least a full-length film about a new investigation of old friends.🙂
Can the people below NOT fight about who is a better Ray? Personally, I didn't particularly care for the ending of the show because I felt it was rushed and tacked on quickly, which as I later found out, it was. Yes, I prefer RayV (mostly because DM is amazing) but my complaint is more about the writing of the end rather than who Fraser ended up with, as some people see it. Though, the part where Fraser gets to see his mom and the music they used at the end was fan-freakin-tastic. Got teary.
@NancyK97 I didn't say you were stupid for not seeing it. My point was that there are many, many more people who see F/K subtext (even my usually oblivious husband noticed it) than see F/V subtext (which I have never noticed despite my pretty thick slash goggles). Paul did not do a "poor job of it" if the subtext is obvious to as many people as it is. I'm sorry that your 'ship is in the minority but accusing Paul of favoritism because the show ends with Kowalski smacks of sour grapes to me.
The truth is, the series ended with season 2. Season 3 and 4 were just poorly produced, inferiorly written episodes that were marketed at a specific demographic that had neither the size nor stability to sustain the series. While Flashback was hardly a great final episode, it left things to the imagination: Ray and Fraser were more aware of why they were friends. The prospect of future adventures was present. Fraser's new burgeoning romance with Thatcher was exciting. That was the true ending.
There is no "subtext" between Kowalski and Fraser. That "subtext" is one that Paul Gross admitted to playing up in order to try to save the show. Paul Haggis, creator and lead writer to the series clearly made Fraser straight with episodes like "Victoria's Secret(1+2) which, additionally, also happens to be some of the most impactful and drama-ridden episodes in the whole series. When Paul Haggis saw that the series was dying, he left it midway through season 2.
@fentina as for RayV and Stella : that seemed very sudden but not totally unbelievable (and he's not "stuck" if that's were he wants to be ;) Frannie: single motherhood is not a bad thing, she was obviously happy with what she had (although personally I always imagend she ended up with TUrnbull),she also has a lot of family to help her if she ever needed that... but I agree, poor Turnbull
Hold up. It might be different where you're from buuuut in England there was a 4th series and this was like the 14th episode. And I think it's the same in America since my Plex server (Plex is American) registers the 4th series
IMDB has 4 seasons listed. S01 - 22 eps. S02 -18 eps. S03 - 13 eps. S04 - 13 eps. IIRC, 3&4 were funded in large part by the BBC, and that may be why there are only 13 each.
I think RK wanted to explore the north west territory with Fraser so he could meet up with Fraser's sister again, who he fell in love with at first sight. Otherwise RK would be extremely unhappy in the boring life of riding a dog sled around in the cold without a hat. Even Fraser would become bored out there, after experiencing the city where all the training he had in his youth were so suited for being a super crime fighter. There are no bad guys in the tundra except for maybe a litter bug.
Slevin and other writers also left the show midway through season 3 when they realized that Gross and his own writers were attempting to rewrite the style and mythos of the show to salvage it. The entire fanfic scene arose and many gay viewers completely ignored huge bits of continuity from the first two seasons, and, aided by Gross' new direction of the series, made huge logical jumps in logic that attempted to rewrite just about everyone as gay.
Francesca's ending stunk. It wasn't funny or witty at all. And it was either disrespectful to Francesca, painting her as a trollop or simply establishing a very anti-religious subtext towards the end, that was actually absent the first two seasons. Additionally, Thatcher's imploded chemistry with Fraser, her own epilogue, which was cruel and pointless, as well as Fraser's pointless exploration of the North with Kowalski were just some of the massive misdirections that the final episode presented
Nothing's permanent. Except our memories. And when they fade.We are gone. But we remain while our names are spoken.
Love this
What you said has completed something I began saying 17 or 18 years ago.
Aye
RIP Leslie Nielsen (Buck Frobisher) and Draco (Diefenbaker)
Yes, now RIP Gordon Pinsent. Fantastic actors, I loved that dog!
It never ended, as far as I'm concerned. Fraser is riding forever, because you can't keep horsemen in a cage. Should the angels call, well it's only then, he might pull in the reins.
damn, I really miss this show...
I wasn't aware, but Fraser's mother in this scene is actually played by Paul Gross's wife, Martha Burns.
It's time we sent a search party out for those guys ... Come on we need 'em. More Due South!
A wonderful moment,Benton saying goodbye to his Dad one last time,& being allowed a final glimpse of his Mum,magic!
Reminds of the dreams I have where I still talk to my Dad.
I couldn't of said it better or agree more.
I loved this series. Its a shame they had to end it. I like the Northwest Passage song.
One of - if not the - most beautiful, touching, evocative series finales in TV history... though I usually struggle to watch beyond 1:48 through tears
This comment also works without the word finales
I couldn't agree more, I loved this series. The end hits me hard now as opposed to back then.
This still makes me cry.
RIP Gordon Pinsent. Canadian Legend.
I love being Canadian.. this ending to show .. when Fraser watches his parents fade and he sees his mom.. got me right in the heart
It sure was good to see Leslie Nielson playing a serious part,& a loyal friend to Benton's Father.
I cried when I first watch this very beautiful and emotional scene, just watched again now in 2023 and still cried 😢❤
What an extraordinary series this was
I love the piano version of Stan Rogers' Northwest Passage fading into the song.
Its been decades since the last episode, and this is one of my favourite moments of the entire show
Not the bit where we find out what the characters did, but the very end where there is an exchange of salutes - its just perfect

And now they have found the Hand of Franklin. I feel oddly fulfilled.
Sharon Lent if they had asked the Inuit they would have it sooner
Great ending to a great show!
As was due south nothing is preminant so so sad even in Aug 2019 hey the end of an era. It will live forever though 🙏❤🇬🇧🇬🇧❤🙏
This show deserved more than 4 seasons. I know this says series 3 but they combined the last 2 seasons into one series. Mountie On The Bounty was technically the season 3 finale. Anyway, they could have at least made a movie.
Depends on which country you live in.
Loved Due South as a show. So deep and great morals in the story.
I bought this show on dvd at dollar general store for 10 bucks 3 years ago
My mama passed away four years ago today. Thank you kindly, 13 years later.
I really think someone should release Northwest Passage with the music here in the background too. I'd love to hear that...

This always gets me ahed many tears
Reminds me of Star Trek and the 5 year mission but this one is the furthest mission we can go; a one way trip like the mars trip
This is so beautiful. About Heaven
i remember this show as a kid

So did we all, DUE SOUTH will never die thanks RAY AND BENTON Aug 2020 😎😎👍👍💎💎
great series :)
Rest in Peace Gordon Pinsent
I know its just acting but darn it gets to you.
Lovely ending to a fantastic series!
RIP Gordon Pinsent. And thank you.

The old guy was the voice of Babar 🐘👑
Masterpiece
I loved this show. I forgot how good it was until I went down a memory worm hole.
Oh son nothing is permanent!
Love this!
Its 2018 I missed this show
Box set. I watch it once a year.
Fraser's mom, Caroline is actually his wife in real life. Eeek, she probably didn't get over that one for a while.
@framejessejames It's an instrumental version of the opening theme song, Due South.
It’s actually northwest passage by Stan Rodgers not the theme
😢 Farewell, Sgt. Fraser.
Pretty weird considering paul is married to his tv mom
I try to just be in the scene here, but keep getting distracted by the fact that that's Paul calling his wife "mom", and... I don't know.. ;)
0:40 to 0:45 Sums up life.

Farewell to Gordon Pinsent as well
Now that they have finally found Franklin, what will Constable Frazer be doing now? Go looking for HMS Terror?
Please, let us know...have you found 'the hand' yet?
loved this show. Hey how come I can't reply to anyone elses comments? There is no reply tab like there usually is. RUclips down or something today?

Christ, this show...😢

What is the song that plays when Sr. fades
Holy tears
You and I both Brian.
I really liked this show when David Marciano (Ray Vecchio) was still on it. The first season with Stan was okay, then it went downhill for me.
