Thanks. The focal point is just a good way to concept and begin a drawing so I wouldn't say there is any rule to using a ruler. It really depends on what kind of drawing you're doing. I've used a ruler when i need more precision but it really depends. A ruler can also work as guide until you get better drawing straight lines freehand.
i think what you're talking about is a soft lead drafting pencil. Softer lead is darker and draws smoother. I don't use anything fancy. I think I used a 6B drafting pencil on this. Just check the numbers -- the higher the number the softer and darker the lead. If you want really black go with a 9B pencil.
