Actually, when the station first opened in 2004, it initially served as the East Rail Line's southern terminus before the Kowloon Southern Link project. After the Kowloon Southern Link project was completed in 2009, Hung Hom became the interchange station for the East Rail Line and the West Rail Line, with East Tsim Sha Tsui now serving as part of the West Rail Line, and with a then-new station (Austin) connecting the West Rail Line to its previous southern terminus, Nam Cheong.
Actually ETST is not the interchange station of East Rail Line and West Rail Line throughout these years. Hung Hom is actually the interchange station between those 2 lines. Previously, the ETST to Hung Hom part belongs to the East Rail Line. In 2009, when West Rail Line extends from Nam Cheong to Hung Hom, the ETST to Hung Hom part offered to West Rail Line in order to proceed the Shatin to Central Link project since East Rail Line is going to propose extending to Hong Kong Island, and the West Rail Line (currently Tuen Ma Line) will extend to Kowloon City District and East Kowloon to Tai Wai, connecting the Ma On Shan Line, so making Hung Hom as the terminus of both lines is the final decision. So ETST has become a part of West Rail Line, and East Rail Line has been shortened to Hung Hom in order for a better routing to Hong Kong Island in the future. Currently Tuen Ma Line has commenced service, which merged West Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line into one. And East Rail Line will extend through the Victoria Harbour to Admiralty, proposing to commence its extension service in mid 2022, estimated June or July.

@@KT-if6yday 獅子山下面本身已有行車隧道,旁邊有龍翔道、城大及浸大本部校園,空間明顯不多,當時馬鞍山綫延長時已落實以鑽石山站為一轉乘站,方便來往九龍灣、觀塘的通勤通學客源,紓緩九龍塘站的負荷,故需另建月台應付,後更名「XXX一期」;加上顯徑站在大圍車廠範圍內竣工啟用,導致那段地底路段橫越竹園,而非獅子山。另外,東鐵九龍塘至大圍段的路段為筆架山隧道。

@@tonytang5452 睇翻未有MTR前,港英政府在1967年的地下鐵路最早期的規劃圖,原本係有第四條地鐵線,係有一條由火炭開始(轉乘九廣鐵路),橫過城門河去曾大屋,然後落紅梅谷,之後出鑽石山、啟德、馬頭圍、土瓜灣、紅磡,最後到尖沙咀的“沙田線”,九龍一段的走線基本上同而家一模一樣。不過最後因為成本等因素,MTR在80年代淨係起左紅藍綠三色線,第四條“沙田線”一直無起,拖到今時今日。
