The lawsuit against Apple has to do with interoperability and Tim Cook is on record saying he's not going to fix the "green bubble" issue because adopting RCS doesn't sell iPhones.

The user experience is degraded on purpose to draw and lock people into the Apple ecosystem for much the same reason they got away with proprietary hardware and anti-repair practices so long.

The problem isn't the colors of the texting bubbles, they only bring that up to highlight the fact that apple gimps their own products to control the consumer's purchasing choices. Apple specifically breaks the functionality of texting to give users the perception that androids have worse texting functionality, making the iPhone user experience worse.
Its not just the big ticket items either, it's almost everything they make at every level.
Apple's USB C DAC (USB C to 3.5mm adapter) is designed to artificially limit its performance when it's plugged into an Android. It's one of the best DACs under $100, so people have figured out how to bypass the limiter, and there are no adverse effects when you turn it off. The limiter only exists to harm the experience of Android users

Another thing that annoys me is that an entire audio mode on the AirPod Pros is missing (turning ANC and Transparency off) on android because you can only enable the off mode via a toggle on iOS.
My airpods had worse battery life than an iPhone user would have because I literally couldn't switch to the off mode to save battery. I could only switch between ANC and Transparency mode but could never just turn them off.
Like, I literally WANT to use some of the shit in Apple's ecosystem but their whole MO is to gatekeep features or gimp them in any way possible to influence people's purchases in a way that harms everyone unless everything you own is Apple and everything your friends own is Apple.

You can argue that the complaints we've seen so far in the lawsuit vs Apple are silly, but those silly things like green bubbles are *working*, which is what makes them anticompetitive. I literally just got an iphone, and a friend was excited that I would be blue text. She's a grown ass adult.

I bought my first MacBook in 1994 and still use an iPad, so I have been committed to Apple computers for 30 years, however Apple’s exclusionary tech and policies since Steve Jobs died have been increasingly unfair. I’m a professional photographer who uses a Google Pixel because it has an awesome camera, blowing away Apple’s iPhone, yet the File Transfer app no longer works on Apple devices, so my iPad will not recognize the Pixel, thus I have been unable to download my photos in a direct manner, so Apple sucks, as far as I am concerned, and I will no longer be purchasing any of their ridiculously expensive products unless they get their shit together and serve their customers, instead of their bottom line.

Let's face it, folks - if IT companies were the first to deliver electricity to your home, your plugs would be overpriced, proprietary garbage, and they would be lobbying governments to make it illegal to get around their proprietary crap, while including microphones and other monitoring to 'improve your user experience' of plugging shit into a socket while nerfing the competition. 'Hey, end user, that thing you tried to plug into the socket isn't connected using a wire with our chip, so, yeah, we're gonna go ahead and kill the audio because we're super-concerned about your audio experience, and don't think too hard on this, just go buy our wire! And don't worry, we've heard your concerns as both a customer and mostly an investor, and we'll be switching to a subscription model as soon as we figure the market can't refuse!'.
The tech space is notoriously under-regulated and has been for decades. Apples business model is built around using prestige and aesthetics to sell people on products they don't need at absurd prices. We are just now reaching charging and communication standards with USB-C legislation in Europe.

The reason they seem to be taking this angle in the apple case is its basically the same case as the one they won against microsoft in a lot of ways. They're arguing that locking you into apples ecosystem is the same as what microsoft was doing with internet explorer. The argument is in no way that they are the only smart phone its that the lack of interoperability creates an artificial lock in driving down competition and negatively impacting consumers. This just feels weird because we don't enforce these laws like we should

The apple suit makes a lot of sense, having an ecosystem that works BETTER together is different than having an ecosystem that you actively LOCK other products from even attempting to enter. As an Android user, it's baffling how many adults try to come at me for not having an iPhone. Like, I'm happy you're into your product, but I'm equally satisfied with my $98 Motorolla. Let's just focus on how awesome it is that we have the ability to text, call, and browse the internet at our own leisure, whereas my entire childhood was a kitchen family land-line and no internet/computer with the eventual dial up internet.

You don't necessarily need a traditional monopoly to engage in anti-competitive behavior. Of course not all anti-competitive behavior is strictly actionable under anti-trust legislation (that is why the EU passed the Digital Markets Act). I think the important factor here is that apple is using it's dominant position in a duopoly of mobile phone operating systems to keep users locked into to their specific ecosystem. And yes, Apple isn't the only company doing this - but they one of the the biggest companies doing this. If not the biggest, depending on what you measure the size by. Sometimes going after the biggest players first is the most efficient use of prosecutor and regulator resources. Again, the european DMA also does exactly that by specifically targeting the biggest companies in tech.

The thing about the Apple Watch is that you literally can’t use it with Android, unlike Air Pods which can be used with Android over Bluetooth.
Also, the green bubble thing is actually a big issue. I’ve gone on dates with people who’ve admitted that green bubbles are a red flag for them (which is honestly kind of a red flag for me). It was even revealed in the Epic case that Apple abandoned their port of iMessage to Android because they wanted to preserve vendor lock-in.
As an Apple user, I honestly feel stuck in the ecosystem. Their talk of privacy is all a ruse to distract from their anticompetitive practices. They care about your privacy from other companies, but they don’t hold themselves to the same standards, and they constantly change the App Store rules to fit their needs.

I like apple more than I dislike them and I dislike Windows more than I like it. For that reason I use apple products. I was a diehard windows user from the late 80's until 2007 when I bought my first apple computer. A cheap 2004 17" iMac. I have been in IT since the early 90's and windows has sucked since MS came out with win 95 to screw over Digital Research with their superior and cheaper DR Dos.

Just because Microsoft was better at manipulating the market doesn't mean Apple should just get away with it...
And, counterpoint, this kind of stuff is *precisely* the government's job -- you know, protecting consumers? Consumers can be manipulated, especially when marketing for decades has convinced them that the exact issues in question are part of the image, exclusivity and appeal of the offending products.

@@dancoroian1 no matter how you act, if your market share is 10% and the biggest share to MS is almost 90%, by definition you aren't a monopoly and what you do can't be seen as anti competitive in that light. I owned 3 Android running phones as my first smart phone. All 3 were mid/upper tier and all 3 became boat anchors quickly. I switched to a used iphone 5s ( then a 6s, 8, and now 12 mini ) and was able to get updates for many years. I will put up with Apple's business model as long as they support their phones for 3-5 years or longer. All 4 of my iphones still work. I use the 5s in a FLIR case, 6s is a music player, 8 is for my drone, 12 mini is my everyday phone.
Now that Kate’s real story has come out, it’s probably time to leave her and the family alone for a bit.
Not saying it's a valid basis for an antitrust action, but damn near everyone I know with an iPhone really does care a lot about the green bubble nonsense. I fully believe that even if other phones became significantly cheaper and better than the iphone, they wouldn't even consider becoming a green-bubble-class person.
The bubble color thing is mainly a teenager thing, but that doesnt mean it cant also be an anti-conpetitive thing. Teenagers are just as much consumers as adults are.
This is the main part of this lawsuit i agree with. When you look at the stark difference of apple/android users between teens and adults, you see the "bullying" works. Its something like 90% of teenagers prefer apple. No exaggeration. And one day those teenagers turn into adults where the "bullying" doesnt work on them, much like it doesnt work on you, but they're already in that ecosystem, already less likely to move to other platforms, and already apple has won.

The real problem with text messages is Apple refuses to use RCS text messages with apple to Android texting instead they use SMS which is from the 90s and has no encryption. All androids use RCS texts so basically android to android text are secure, Apple to Apple texts are secure but Apple to Android texts are not because Apple has to make everything difficult unless you buy exclusively from them
I'm kind of sad that y'all don't have a good view of the lawsuit against apple, this lawsuit should make it better for all consumers, but mainly apple users themselves. They are artificially limiting their own product to the detriment of their users and selling it as exclusivity.
Yeah, it was really weird that they didn't touch the actual purpose of the lawsuit. It's nearly impossible to use an Android smartwatch with your iPhone phone, but you can use Airpods on your Android. If you own an iPhone you need Apple peripherals. It took a lawsuit in the EU to force them to change the charging cords to USB-C. Plus, the whole issue about shared photos and videos either looking like shit or not even working is a *huge* deal.

As someone who uses Apple a ton, the lawsuit has merit. Other phone companies don't have any market in the US. I'm pretty sure Nothing isn't even sold in the US. No one is getting a cheaper Samsung phone that easily. Trying to get people to WhatsApp was a nightmare personally. Come on guys, Apple's bad. The "bullying" aspect of the green bubble might not work on you, but it can work on the young, which locks them into the Apple products from a young age.
Plus, actively making the Apple user's experience worse to give off the illusion of competitors' products being worse is definitely unethical. If your product is good, you don't need to lie about others. Just because Apple isn't the only product around doesn't mean its actions aren't anti-competitive.

The Apple antitrust suit is totally valid. Apple has something like 70% of the US market.
You only need to capture 50% of the market to be considered a functional monopoly, wiht partial monopolies/oligopolies being diagnosed at even less problematic concentrations.

My parents have iPhones and sending them photos and videos of their grandchildren is basically impossible without looking like shit, and switching them to some other messaging service is just too confusing for them (and I've tried). Believe it or not, green bubble discrimination is actually real. An NBA player got bullied by his teammates to get an iPhone because they didn't want him in the group chat. There are also people who refuse to date Android users. It's crazy how petty adults are over what phone someone uses.

More likely he is very much aware of the legality, but is a massive gambling addict. I agree about the friend taking the fall, although I doubt much will come of it. He is far too valuable, all sorts of rules will be bent or ignored and the best possible version of events will be put forward.
gambling has a complete and utter hold on the uk. it’s been insane watching it creep into sports in America on such a massive scale.

Bad take on the apple thing. The issue with apple messaging to non-apple devices is that Apple actually takes EXTRA steps to ensure the lower quality. That is not something that is simply happening organically. The problem lies in their deliberate causing of these issues. The lawsuit is anything BUT stupid. If successful, this will be a huge benefit for the consumer. It has MUCH more involved than "not liking then green bubble". I wish you guys had given a quarter of the research time to this as you did to sports gambling.
These "software ecosystems" are actually incredibly offputting to me. Whatever I'm doing on one device should remain localized entirely to that device unless I choose to send it, and the idea that all my devices should share data is just entirely wrong to me.
