DP of Untitled Floating Mom here, just wanted to shout out Alexis Thompson, Production Designer extraordinary who made the house interior look INCREDIBLE as you pointed out! You would not believe how different it looks in real life. Thanks for reviewing!

Love that you're highlighting good short films. Regarding the ending of NO SUCH THING, I think it does come back full circle to the discussion outside the van. These characters are the cows - one of them has his brain milked, and his buddy is eaten (the milk cow and the meat cow).

Alien Film; I think the "shaky" shots would be more effective if NOT used in every scene? Use it when it helps tell the story?

Love the 3rd one, but i can tell that main female actor is actually a (very happy go lucky)
girl in real life, i assume people naturally attract to her, i've met the low energy non nonchalant
white chick types before their actually my favorite personalities, i just think they could've found
someone a little more Jenna Ortega energy

Interesting take on that third one. I feel like it's the kind of film with such a dream-like setup that it doesn't have to run on the meat and potatoes story engine- or at least I don't expect it to. I would also argue the story is about the girl wanting to die. She's afraid of aging and attempts to do things to speed the aging process, like the act of smoking. And her declaration at the end is the arc. Sticking around as in not dying. That's my read anyway!
I agree narration is a double edged sword that is difficult to wield. I think it pretty much works here as we can just jump from moment to moment without too much set up- biggest benefit I can see is something like the older self scene. She can just announce it in the narration which not only quickly lets us know what we need to know, but is so matter of fact it plays as a perfectly absurd comedic line.
Anyway, I've been really enjoying these short film breakdowns, it's been awesome to see someone do something with a (constructive) critical eye to these smaller filmmakers and opening a healthy discussion about it all! Keep up the good work!

Kent, thanks for lifting others up and being constructive. Your positive vibes make a real difference, likely to a lot of creative folks out here. A few videos back you went over Milanote, and it has REALLY helped to organize and convey all ideas I have on a prospective short film project I've been wanting to get to all year long. It really created a needed solution to not rely on lengthy emails to explain what I needed to share with everyone.
I appreciate your critiques of these films. The last one was also a bit too heady for my taste. It just raised a lot of questions that didn't really get a pay off by the end. I'm also really "meat and potatoes" in getting the substance and mechanics followed to fruition. Ambiguity can be good, but you need enough information laid along the way to form a complete thought at the end. Of the three here, I preferred the first short. It's clever, largely well produced, and well cast. I agree that maybe a witter ending would've worked more organically with the earlier tone instead of going all "Fire in the Sky," but the skills on display were impressive. The second short was a bit sterile for me. It needed more emotional touches beyond the phone call. If it was about the dog and its owner, that element wasn't presented with as much reverence.
Anyway, whenever you call for a new set of shorts, I may respond. All my shorts are from a decade or more ago, so, they're all standard def, but might be worth a look. Regardless, thanks for sharing your knowledge, encouragement, and skills with us!

I was totally expecting to see the one friend stumbling over the 'body parts' only to eventually come up on his friend, alive and well and realizing the aliens had mutilated a 'meat cow' and then they can both grill or something since a charcoal grill wouldn't be damaged by an EMP lol

I assumed that once I uploaded my masterpiece of a first short film I'd soon have an agent in Hollywood and be a multi millionaire. But views haven't exactly skyrocketed, and after initial disappointment I honestly don't care. I care about improving as a filmmakers and I know I make decent stuff, so eventually I'll succeed one way or another.

I liked the No such thing short. I liked pretty much everything about it. Just based on my taste, I think I'd have cut it a bit tighter, felt some scenes a bit lingering. And maybe it's just my weird kink, but would love the ending to be that cops arrest the main character next to the body of his friend, we see him in jail pleading, crying that aliens did it, the cop look at him, go close-up, and the cop answers: "Aliens? There are no such thing". But it's my fetish that I like when the title is incorporated in the dialog 😀🤷‍♂️ just things based on my taste, not critique, for me it was better written, directed and captured that most big budget movies nowadays 🤷‍♂️🙂

Great video! It's pretty wild how YT is the place where good videos go to die while a cell phone video of a guy cutting his hair or a kid opening toy packages will garner literally millions of views. I didn't really understand the 2nd video. VO says that the world is about to end and the actor just sits there... for the whole movie... like he's heard this every day of his life.
Then the last one was missing a protagonist, someone who drives the story. She kind of just moped through the scenes and made an already slow burn kind of boring. Her goal was unclear. Was it to measure how high her mom was? Maybe she could have been working on a way to bring her down instead of just watching.
Hoping to see more of these vids!

what is the metamorphic meaning behind the 3rd story? I dont get it.
was it that the mom passed away and to come down means you move on?
The old man was also saying the same thing how he moved on from the tragic passing of his daughter?
