Thanks, Hudson. I need to update my controls, and this is very helpful. I've kept it simple: Bank A = Action; Bank B = Basic (your knock-around); Bank C = Cine (8K video, but Landscape for stills); Bank D = Dark (your Milky-Way). Dennis was our guide with Steve Perry (before I knew you were going to CR) - his turning off of Subject Detection that you go over in the Z8/Z9 video is genius. Looking forward to testing that out. Keep up the great work. I don't get out to shoot much as a caregiver for my wife, but I really enjoy "shooting" vicariously through you, Rick and David
I went through the lengthy initial setup video and was appreciative both of that and of the update, but I especially thank you for making the settings downloadable. I look forward to using the camera with this common sense setup and tweaking it if, and as necessary. THANK YOU HUDSON!
I have also the Nikon Z9 and the settings on both body's are identical. I use the back focus button , Shutter button on release only The FN1 button is to pin point the subject ( bird ) FN2 button 3D tracking , FN3 button is cycle trough auto focus area and FN4 is FX / DX selection. I have put auto ISO off. In M mode I can use the back wheel from the camera to adjust shutterspeed and the front wheel to adjust aperture The joystick is my reset button to put the autofocus field in the middle again. Nikon is realy amazing and so easy to use. I have total control over using the correct exposure.
Nice. Thanks for the very helpful update. Your explanations suggest other mods that might never occur to me otherwise. I like the Display Button Idea a lot. It helps me simplify my setup. In that regard, I am cycling through area modes with the convenient (and slightly raised) video button.
Really appreciate all of the work you put into these videos to help the community. Slightly unrelated question. I am traveling to Germany then through France to Normandy and down to Paris over 10 days starting next week. This trip is not primarily about photography but is a chance to spend time with a very close friend as well as see many of the places I have read about over the years. I am going back and forth between taking my Q3 or my ZF. Obviously the ZF is more flexible as I would take the 24-120 but there is something so special about the lens on the Q3. I would be interested to hear your thoughts?
Oh wow, tough choice, but I'm inclined to say go Q3. I never really regret leaning on the simplicity and quality that camera outputs. I'm sorry if I got to this too late to help. I've been just slammed this last week with work and family. I hope you have a fabulous trip. My wife and I drove from Paris to Normandy and back when she was pregnant with our first kiddo. Wonderful trip. Enjoy.
hi hudson, follow yr guide to set up my z9 focus mode, its great, thx one question, did you assign any button for "Auto-area AF" when shooting vertical? thankyou again
I Haven't yet, but it's a great question. I generally keep the camera horizontal for birds in flight. It gives me more leeway for keeping them in the frame. :-)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thank you. I was thinking only of a file that I would follow along and work through the menu system. I have done that a few times with each of my Nikons and it has helped me to know the menu system better. But a Bin is like a FW update. I may try the Bin after rewatching your videos a couple of times. I may get a better grasp of what changes with your bin. At 72, I sometimes wonder how I got by so well being so ADHD ;-).
I commend you for all the time & effort you put forth to assist the Nikon Z community! GREAT SUPPORT!

Can't wait to get back out with you Carl. Great to hear from you.

Thank you, Henry for updated Z9 settings.
First name is Hudson, but you're very welcome. :-)

It's a computer that also takes photographs. Amazing!!!

thx hudson, pls keep us in post, i use a lot of vertical shooting when doing fashion catwalks
To be honest, if I need auto area, I just don't switch grips. I generally prefer wide area for people situations like a catwalk though.
Did I miss something in the settings download? I ended up with a .bin file that has more steps just to open up. Geekier than I thought they would be.
You don't open that file. You load it into the camera. Detailed instructions are on the download page. :)

Exactly the way to do it. :) is so important to understand those settings and to adapt them to your needs. :)
Link to Z9 settings download is bad. I finally found it, but it does not say it's for 5.0.
@@rcrogers6 no it works fine for everyone else who's used it and I keep it updated. 5.0 was updated last spring. :)
Hello. Can you please share the camera settings file? I would be very grateful. In the menu, settings can be saved to the memory card.
@@Данил-г1з8ч I did long ago. Just check the free downloads on my website.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto thank you so much
Thanks!
Just catching up on comments. Thank you so much Robert. Much appreciated.
Thank you for sharing! I don't have Z9 but you helped many Z folks for sure 😀
