  • This is my second date with the 2017 Land Rover Discovery. This time it is the 340 hp supercharged model in HSE trim. Revisiting a car allows me to focus on finer details, which do not always make it into the regular review. So, is the Land Rover Discovery as good, as the price would suggest?

    In my option, this is a great looking vehicle. As far as reliability, I have a 2012 and it has been excellent - no problems whatsoever. Most vehicles do things at the "good" level, but LR does so many things at the "excellent" level. Excellent lights, excellent steering and suspension, comfort, seats, stereo, towing ability, power, safety, etc., that there is no competition.

      Hey maybe you can help me out here since you are an owner. What in the heck does SI6 stand for? I know it means it's the regular petrol engine but not sure what the actual letters and number mean. Thanks!

    Looks nice and I like this interior. And as a "must have" option number one is a diesel. Petrol for any car of such size is nonsense. Happy new year, Marek.

    Great review, and what a fantastic landscape you're driving through, Marek. Personally, despite being British, I'd rather have something like a humble Suzuki Vitara, because it'll be more reliable.

    • @davidthompson9141

      Have driven a Suzuki Vitara in Mauritius and it wasnt bad, although a few frustrating bits like the wipers and indicator levers were the wrong way around. It done a job but was a very unexceptional and sometimes frustrating little car, despite having decent fuel economy for a petrol. Had a Range Rover Sport autobiography, which is very similar to the HSE Luxury SDV6 version of the Landrover discovery and it was one hell of car that really surprised me, the auto gearbox was brilliant with power always there when you put your foot down. It could shit aswell for a big tank. It could offroad incredibly well too. The cabin was top drawer compared to all rival bar maybe rolls royce. And there were some little engineering bits like the pattern of the rear wiper, which normally I wouldnt notice but was so well thought out I couldnt help but appreciate the thought that went into it. The bits I didnt like so much. For some reason air con would switch off automatically 1 minute or 5 minutes or 6 minutes into my journey, regardless of temperature and would revert to outside air, which i would notice as soon as I got outside smells in. Also, for some weird reason every time I got into the car, it would open soundcloud in my phone and start playing the same techno track Id never heard of before every time, which was the oddest thing ever. Outside of that, it was such a good car to drive that those problems didnt really bother me. Ive always been a big mercedes guy, love their reliability and sound engineering, and hate landrovers from my time in the military but the range rover surprised me, it was so much nicer than a mercedes and landrover are moving in the right direction, hence why Im weighing up whether to get a discovery or a Merc GLS. Im edging toward landrover because merc SUVs have a tendency to feel like roller skates on backroads and A roads and theres something to be said about how planted you feel in a range rover. Still have to test drive a disco to see if its the same. You dont buy a big SUV to save money but I think you’d be surprised if you drove a landrover. They arent like I have always thought of landrovers.

      @@davidthompson9141 Great points, David. I haven't driven one since I was a kid of 20 (nearly 60 now), so my memory is one of agricultural refinement and bumpiness!

    • @davidthompson9141
      @davidthompson9141 4 года назад +1

      Ambienfinity Music I know what you mean. In the military we always used to get the worst landrover defenders on the base, LHD versions and ones where you could never find 2nd gear and had to go 1st to 3rd. In the falklands, the landrover’s suspension was too rigid for the terrain and twice i had doors blow off in the wind. At Christmas this year I had a Mercedes GLE booked from Avis but they called to say no GLEs and only Range Rover or Jag F Pace available. I took the range rover for the size but was seriously impressed. I think with Landrover, they are specifically and SUV manufacturer so the car is built from the ground up to be an SUV. With Mercedes and a lot of suv makers is a GLC is built on a C Class chassis, a GLE is built on and E class chassis and a GLS with an S Class.chassis. The problem with this is you are building upwards on a narrow chassis designed for a lower down car. For this reason, those SUVs dont feel stable at speed or with a cross wind or when cornering.
      With the range rover’s wider wheel base it feels planted in all of those situations and having the 306 bhp engine instead of the 260bhp engine of the mercedes 3litre, is just the perfect amount for making it enjoyable to drive, rather than just comfortable. I drove from Chester to Cairnryan and back twice and the windy A75 which is normal a nightmare was actually a really nice drive. The Discovery is longer than a range rover sport and am not sure 100% if its wheelbase is narrower as it looks pretty close when you see 2 close together. Thats why I would want to test drive a discovery before buying, but Ive changed my opinion on landrover.

    The new integration of Apple CarPlay is horrible! It’s so buggy with continuous disconnections from your mobile device to not working at all. The entire system is slow and the only way you can update the firmware is by taking it into your dealership which takes up to 4 hours to complete. That seatbelt issue for the third row that he mentioned in this video is a pain too. Such a waste of my hard earned money.

    I own the 2.0 HSE Lux. The engine is a peach. The car is a complete all rounder. I have two downsides. No matter how many times I look at the rear, it never looks any better and the infotainment system is slow, far too complex and very unreliable. Apple car play would be a big plus if it were available.

    Great Review Marek! The quality of the materials, the seating position and the responsiveness of the powertrain are important for me. Think of Renault vs. VW if you get me... It boggles my mind how some manufacturers look good on paper, but then you get in the car and you just can't get comfortable, the powertrain is completely disconnected feeling and the infotainment system is frustrating. Finally, RELIABILITY, which I am not sure this car will have... BTW, where did you film this? Are those the alps?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      My last experience with Renault Talisman was rather disappointing. The ride was quite harsh for what is supposed to be a motorway cruiser. With a 1.6 engine it makes even less sense.
      True, reliability is not something JLR cars are know for. However this being a new development under TATA may be a game changer. We'll have to wait and see.
      These are not the Alps. This is Tatra mountain range on the Polish side. Slovakia is on the other side.

    Great review as always :) keep up the good work.
    I like this car, but as someone said, only for deep pockets, and at that price range, there are always a lot of alternative cars to compare and buy, with better reliability and drive terrain.
    A lot of things I consider when buying a car, starting from reliability as a first most important thing, at which point I start searching for known issues in the forums.
    Right now I am deciding on buying a new car, either the 2018 nissan qashqai 1.6T, or the 2018 subaru xv 2.0.
    Could you please if you have the time and the resources make a review of the new 2018 Subaru XV? I would really like your opinion.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      I don't do Subaru. They are located half a day's drive from where I live. Picking the car up, and returning it takes two days, and too much money.

    • @darkdawn01
      @darkdawn01 6 лет назад

      Marek Drives Its OK, I understand, Subaru's in Europe are not that popular, and it takes to much time to get to the dealer, test the car and return it, and also return home.
      In my country, the dealer is like 4.30 hours away from me, so yeah, it's a long distance to cover.
      Thanks for your reply, and waiting for your next amazing car review.

      It's an option available in 5-seater models. Space saver is standard on 5-seaters, and 7-seaters get a repair kit. I bet sooner or later someone is going to offer an aftermarket full-size external spare mount for 7-seaters.

  • @AghashQ
    @AghashQ 6 лет назад

    Not only the Disco5 looks like an ordinary city kindergarten SUV - the nowadays reviews are as useless and off the point as well: for pants won't get dirty, electric seats, rear view camera wash... Pathetic indeed. How about terrain response, clearance, articulation, and - above all - durability? Nice riding experience and gadgets are all great, but they ought to be auxiliary bonus features, not the main point of an ATV. The disco 5 lost all bonds with its older siblings and turned into a tablet on wheels (with variable air suspension for whatever reason - they heard there was such a thing when they designed it, I guess)

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      Let's put it this way: JLR prefers that their cars not be tested in extreme conditions. One has to weigh the worth of one's audience, and the price of fixing a broken car. It all looks grand on Top Gear, but the amount of damage they do to the cars is significant. The difference is they offer sufficient publicity to offset the cost of a few totaled cars.

    • @AghashQ
      @AghashQ 6 лет назад

      Marek Drives I totally get it, Marek. Sorry for making my reaction sway your way - not your fault at all. I guess my frustration has to do with the brand's departure from the concept of Discovery as a legendary ATV for the sake of turning it into a sleek SUV for city boys and moms. Leaving the design aside (which leaves it almost indistinguishable from a plethora of other SUVs), the amount of fragile and illogical trim, liposucted-down trunk or the absence of disco's earlier twin chassis frame speak for themselves.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад

      I guess it's what the market demands, and what regulators force carmakers to do. I'm sure you've driven a Defender. Perhaps you like it for its ruggedness and off road prowess, but chances are most people like the idea of driving something off road looking, but with all the creature comforts they've grown accustomed to in their estates. Proper off roaders are too small of a niche, and luxury features is what helps conceal otherwise high price. After all, Discovery was supposed to be the cheap Range Rover, and today if you can afford one, you may just as well get a Range Rover. BTW, I compared the luggage compartment with my friend's LRD4, and LRD5 even lost that.

    • @AghashQ
      @AghashQ 6 лет назад

      Marek Drives Yes, that's exactly what's happening. But there are exemptions albeit few. Jeep Wrangler still retains its basic concept despite the onslaught of trim and luxury features. I think the LR3/4 models were a great example of a balance struck between the comfort of Range Rovers and the terrain rigidity of Disco 2. Now Defenders are gone, Discos are no longer what they used to be and Land Rover is becoming a bland luxury brand that's blending with Jaguars. Oh, and yes, LR5's trunk is indeed way less spacious and adaptable than 4/5 :-)

    The sound of this engine is soooo anemic and it takes ages to change gear. Ok the infotainment system is quite British. But the rest is pretty cool to me, except for the price 🙃
